Mundinus (Mondino di Luzzi) / Martinus Polichius de Mellerstadt.
Anathomia Mundini emendata per doctorem melerstat. [Leipzig, Martin Landsberg, 1493].
4to (148 x 208 mm). 40 ff. 34 lines, Gothic type. Title-page with full-page woodcut of an anatomical scene. Modern full calf, bound to style with covers stamped in black. Housed in a custom-made cloth solander case with morocco spine label. First illustrated edition of the first dedicated anatomy book. "The first modern book devoted solely to anatomy [...] Mundinus re-introduced human dissection, which had been neglected for 1500 years before him; he was the most noted dissector of his period. The medieval anatomical vocabulary, well set forth by Mundinus, was derived mainly from Arabic" (Garrison/M.). Mondino de' Luzzi, professor at Bologna, is considered the founder of anatomy in the Middle Ages. His treatise remained popular until the beginning of the 16th century and appeared in multiple editions. - "The subject of anatomy was not taught either by lectures or by dissection in the universities at the middle of the 15th century. An occasional 'anatomy' was held, but the neglect of the subject is well illustrated by the absence of anatomical books. There is only one in the list, that of Mundinus [...]. Mundinus was a professor at Bologna from 1306 to 1326, and was the first to teach anatomy from the subject, usually the corpse of a condemned criminal; but there is the record of a procedure in 1319 against four medical students for body-snatching. His 'Anatomia', written in 1316, was for two hundred years the popular text book" (Osler). - The work "met a need universally felt just at that time and commended itself for its brevity, conciseness, and completeness, as well as for the fact that it taught for each separate organ the necessary anatomic technique" (Choulant, p, 88). The title woodcut shows a man on a chair, "with coat and high cap, in his left hand an open book, on the left side of the picture a rock and six linden trees, below, on a table, a dissected cadaver, beside its left foot lies a curved knife, to the right of the cadaver stands a young man in a short garment, bare-headed and with long curls, grasping the intestines of the cadaver with both hands" (p. 93). - Inner margin of title-page neatly reinforced; illegible old library stamp to lower margin and old handwritten number "6" to upper corner. Tiny repair to blank outer margin of final leaf. Scattered light browning, mostly marginal. Very rare: a single copy in auction records since 1979). From the library of the noted Russian-American photographer and biologist Roman Vishniac (1897-1990). H 11633. Goff M-874. GW M-25670. Bod-inc M-330. Sheppard 2122. Proctor 2994. Wellcome I, 4484. Munn, Orson D.: Editor
Scientific American November (Nov.) 1929 Volume 141 Number 5 - Featuring Timeless Great Depression Advertising Fail
Lucky Strike cigarette ad on back cover provides a truly classic and timeless example of a mis-timed advertisement. Consider that the great Wall St. stock market crash of 1929 occurred mere days before this issue hit the newsstands. Beneath the caption "An Ancient Prejudice has been removed" appears a clenched fist labeled as "American Intelligence" breaking a heavy chain. Top left a paranoid miser stacks his gold by candlelight. Top right a wealthy couple visits their palatial bank. Text beneath miser reads "Hoarding gold with the fanatical zeal of the miser has vanished. American Intelligence sponsors thousands of banking institutions to which the individual (i.e. the wealthy couple) safely entrusts his wealth." The message is clear. Readers should put their trust (and money) in the banks, and shun gold. This issue was likely printed just as the Great Crash occurred, causing countless financial institutions to go under - and destroying even more individual fortunes. (The ad goes on to claim that cigarettes have similarly overcome the prejudice against them.) A truly stunning work which deserves to be preserved and reflected upon in this age of limitless fiat currency printing. Average wear with three-inch crease to lower corner of back cover. Suitably framed and mounted, this ad will make a superlative office display for any precious metals executive. Magazine

MURDER.
A Copy of Verses, on W. & J. Dyon, Father and Son, Who was executed at York, for the wilful murder of Mr. John Dyon, of Brancroft, neaf Finningley, brother to the former and uncle to the latter, on the 16th of February, 1828, by shooting him, as he entered the gate of the field leading to his own House, as he returned from Doncaster Market.
Single sheet printed on one side only (214 x 135 mm), printed black on white fragile paper, mounted on card, soiled and creased. From the London Times, February 25, 1828, page 3, Column 1 : "It is this week our painful duty to record one of the most cold-blooded murders that ever darkened the annals of crime, a deed which has spread a wider gloom and deeper horror than any event which has occurred in this neighbourhood within the remembrances of the eldest inhabitants." John Dyon was the second son of a wealthy landowner in Yorkshire, England near Doncaster. He lived a hard working, respectable and quiet life. He married the lovely Betty Conway and together they had 3 daughters, Elizabeth (from whom we descend), Mary and Matilda. Working closely with his father, he often gained favors and gifts from the older man. In 1826 and 1827 alone, it is recorded that he received 63 acres of land and 300 pounds sterling. His older brother, William also received many gifts from their father as a young man, but the money was mostly squandered and drunk, and eventually the gifts stopped coming. So William struggled and John thrived? and William stewed, and his resentment grew. William frequently ranted of his anger to his son, John, poisoning the younger man's mind against his uncle. On Saturday, the 16th of February, 1828, John Dyon attended the market in Doncaster (12 miles away) with a couple of friends as was his custom. On his return home that evening, when he dismounted his horse to open the gate to his property, he was assaulted, shot, and left for dead. His wife, concerned when he didn't arrive home at the time he should, sent a servant to look for him. The servant found John's horse standing near the gate, but did not see John lying a few feet away. They found him in the morning lying where he had bled out. Mr. E. B. Denison, Esq. and the local constable rode out from Doncaster immediately upon receiving the news Sunday morning and began their investigation. Mr. Denison, a student of the new forensic sciences, was pleased to find the murder scene offered an abundance of clues. It had rained on Saturday and the ground was quite moist, then the temperature dropped below freezing overnight, capturing the escape route of the assailants. Mr. Denison observed that there were two attackers; one smaller and lighter than the other. He noted that these persons were relatively wealthy because they possessed a pair boots with both a right and left foot. He also noted that the larger footprints had a distinctive toe-out gait. An inquest was called by the coroner. After the presentation of evidence, the jury delivered a verdict of "Willful murder by person or persons unknown". Many in the area knew of the ill will that William Dyon and his son held for William's brother, John Dyon. By Thursday of the following week, both were arrested. They provided alibis, insisting that they had been nowhere near the scene of the crime. The magistrate felt he had to let them go. After his release by the authorities, William went to a pub in Gainesborough, and bragged there that he had "humbugged" the local magistrate, apparently disclosing further details of the crime. His brags were soon brought to the attention of Mr. Denison and additional inquiries were made. A farmer who had previously worked for William, but was now in John's employ, admitted that he knew of William and young John's plan to kill John Dyon. He also said that he had hidden the gun at his home for a week prior to the murder, and that William had bribed him and threatened him to keep quiet about the plan. Soon, William and his son, John were arrested. The constable searched their homes and found the boots, a pair having both right and left feet, and the gun. During the trial, the farmer, John White, testified to everything he knew, including the fact that William had showed up the evening of the killing to pick up his gun. Several witnesses came forward to testify to the ill will that William and his son bore for the deceased. They also testified that William had a distinctive gait, walking with his toes pointed outward. William Dyon and John, his son, were hanged for their crime on April 4, 1828. William staunchly declared his innocence throughout, but his son confessed to all as they placed the noose around his neck. No other copy located.

['Arukh] Dictionarium chaldaicum non ta[m] ad Chaldaicos interpretes q[uam] Rabbinoru[m] intelligenda co[m]mentaria necessarium [...]. Basel, Johann Froben, 1527.
4to. (8), 434, (2) pp. With woodcut title border by Hans Holbein. - (Bound with) II: The same. [Dikduk de-lishan arami. In hakhasda'ah] Chaldaica grammatica [...]. Ibid., 1527. (8), 212, (4) pp. Both works have woodcut printer's devices at the end. Contemporary blindstamped browns calf with 2 clasps. Sammelband containing two rare works by Münster: the first grammar of Aramaic written in Germany, a principal work, and the first German-produced Aramaic dictionary. "His dictionary [was] adapted from Pagninus's excerpt of Nathan Ben Yehiel's Arukh [...] Münster's most important work [...] was his Aramaic grammar, the first of its kind. The 'Chaldean' element in the Bible has of course long since been recognised, and people like Aurogallus and Fagius had treated the subject earlier in connection with their Hebrew studies. But just as Sanctes Pagninus was the first to exclude deliberately the Aramaic vocabulary from his Hebrew dictionary (1529), so Münster was the first to publish both a grammar and a dictionary devoted solely to Aramaic [...] A special feature of this grammar is the lexicographical introduction to the rabbinical Bible commentaries, with various Latin-Hebrew wordlists of technical terms. Münster also gives examples of the Sephardi and Ashkenazi rabbinical script in woodcut [...] The author compares the Aramaic with Arabic (called by him Saracenica lingua) which he quotes in transcription" (Smitskamp). - Binding restored; endpapers replaced. Münster, Sebastian.
[Melekhet ha-dikduk ha-shalem]. Opus grammaticum consummatum ex variis Elianis libris concinnatum [...]. Basel, (Heinrich Petri, August 1544).
(8), 290, (2 [statt 30]) SS. Mit großer Holzschnittdruckermarke am letzten Bl. verso. Neurer brauner Pappband. 4to. In maßgefertigter Leinenkassette. VD 16, ZV 11220. Burmeister 12. Adams M 1937. Steinschneider 2015, 21. Prijs 68. Münster, Sebastian.
Cosmographiae universalis lib. VI. Basel, Heinrich Petri, (March 1559).
Folio (220 x 328 mm). (24), 474, (4), 475-476 pp, 477-480 ff., 481-608 pp., 609-612 ff., 613-1162, (2) pp. (complete thus). With woodcut title border, Münster's portrait on the verso, printer’s device on the final page by Urs Graf, 14 maps (11 double-page and 3 triple-page) as well as 37 double-page views and approximately 970 woodcuts in the text (including repeats). Contemporary full calf on six raised double bands with gilt central oval ornaments and corner fleurons to both covers; spine sparsely gilt. An early edition of Münster’s monumental work. The Cosmographia by Sebastian Münster (1488-1552), the German cartographer and cosmographer, was one of the most successful and popular books of the 16th century. The most highly valued of all cosmographies, it passed through 24 editions within 100 years and was of principal importance for reviving the interest in geography in 16th century Europe. In spite of its numerous maps, Münster's Cosmography is largely a work of historical geography and history, and it was thus that it soon became the most popular work of its kind throughout Europe - not only in Germany, but also in France (where it saw several editions), Italy, and Bohemia. "The Latin edition, more scientific in many respects, was intended for the scholars in all of Europe" (cf. Burmeister, p. 14). - In good condition, with some frequent but slight waterstaining. A few near-contemporary underlinings and annotations, some in red ink. Binding rubbed, chafed and bumped. Provenance: handwritten ownership of Carl Isaak Rothovius, dated 1649 (possibly related to Isaacus Rothovius [1572-1652], the bishop of Turku, who oversaw the first complete translation of the Bible into Finnish). Late 18th century engraved armorial bookplate of the naturalist and Swedish civil servant Mathias Benzelstierna (1713-91), who studied with Carl Linné and became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1786. VD 16, M 6718. Burmeister 90. Hantzsch 77.33. Adams M 1911. Sabin 51382. Graesse IV, 622. Cf. Borba de Moraes II, 90f. Not in BM-STC German.
