Only edition of this discussion of the 16th century's endless skirmishes and wars on the Ottoman-Habsburg border, posthumously published by Nicolaus Reusner during the early years of the Long Turkish War that had broken out in 1593. The humanist Johannes Sturm (1507-89) had been a friend of Melanchthon, Erasmus and Vesalius. "He established a celebrated school at Strasbourg in 1538, raised to the rank of academy by Maximilian II in 1566, and which was run according to Sturm's principle that a school was a state in miniature" (Blackmer). The anonymous printer was formerly thought to have been Donat Richtzenhan (BM), but VD 16 now identifies him as Tobias Steinmann. The three parts appear to have been issued separately, and the copies in Cambridge and the British Library comprise only the first two parts. - Some browning throughout. Henry Sully was surgeon to Wiveliscombe Infirmiary and to the Duke of Cumberland. This work records a number of local rabies cases and repeats directions given earlier by Somerset doctors that the effects of rabies can be prevented if the saliva is wiped away and the bite thoroughly washed. Washing the wound with antiseptic is still the first treatment for rabies. The understanding of rabies did not progress until Louis Pasteur published 'Sur la Rage' in 1881. The article on Horse Provender is about Sully's system for feeding horse chaff via a chute from a loft above the stable.‎

[9], 288 leaves. The size of the text block in red borders: 25 x 14.5 cm. 33 lines on each page. Printed on paper with European watermarks. Handwritten title on bottom edge. Marginal cutting on the first page. Overall a very good copy. The 20th incunable of the Islamic world, printed by Ibrahim Müteferrika's legendary Basmahane. Süleymân Izzî succeeded Mehmed Subhî Efendi (ca. 1711 - 1769) in 1745 as an official court historian (vaka'nüvis) and held this office until 1753, and is known as one of the three chroniclers for coherent historiography, representing the events in the Ottoman history from 1730 to 1744 and is a particularly valuable source on the Habsburg-Ottoman War between 1736 and 1739, as proven by his chronicle titled "Tevârîh-i Sâmî ve Sâkir ve Subhî", published in 1784. During this time, he recorded the contemporary events taking place between 1744 and 1753 in the Ottoman Empire. This work was the last item in a series of chronicles published by the printing house founded by Müteferrika. Franz Babinger writes that some parts of the book have been translated into German. Hammer translated one of the parts in question into German. All published, Izzi has planned the third part of his work, but this third part was never published. Contents: "Ahd-i Hümâyûn".; "Zikr-i iâde-i fenn-i tiba'at" [i.e. On the book pressing and publishing with a preface by Ahmed Vâsif Efendi].; "Fihrist-i Târîh-i Izzî" [i.e. Content of Izzi's history].; Izzî tarihinin birinci bölümü [i.e. The first chapter].; Izzî tarihinin ikinci bölümü [The second chapter]. The workshop of Müteferrika began its historical mission in 1728. They published 17 works in 22 volumes. The printing house served as a means to the long-term goal of Müteferrika, his efforts to broaden the horizon and modernize the knowledge of Ottoman society and Islamic civilization. This is evidenced by the subjects of the books selected for publishing, the motivations put forth in the publisher's introductions, as well as by the documents illuminating the background of the publication of each book, also published in print. In 1742, with the publication of the Persian dictionary of Hasan Suûrî, a chapter of Ottoman book printing came to an end. With the death of Müteferrika, the printing of Turkish books was temporarily interrupted. The first generation of Ottoman-Turkish prints was soon followed by a new series, when in 1756 Ahmed and Ibrâhîm Efendi (the latter perhaps the founder's son, according to speculative sources) made an attempt to resurrect the legacy of Müteferrika through the possession of a decree obtained from the Sultan. However, this experiment did not prove to be lasting, as it did not last longer than the new edition of the first Turkish printed book, the Lugat-i Vankûlî. After this for several decades there was no continuation to the Turkish book printing established by Müteferrika, until in 1783 the workshop was put in operation again for the publication of six more works. The subjects of these late 18th century works were dominated by history and military technology, thus Müteferrika's strategy of book distribution made its way hand in hand with the efforts of modernization of the Ottoman state. The second edition of Lugat-i Vankûlî followed the principles of the first edition, and its introduction was composed on the model of the introductory pages of the two last books published under Müteferrika's supervision. The works published after 1783 display a noticeable development in typography not only as to its somewhat refined visual impression, but also in its structure. For example, the d+h and r+h ligatures, characteristic of the first generation of Müteferrika's printed books, are replaced by separate letters. Rare first edition, and the only folio printing, of the author's chef d'oeuvre, published in the same year as "De corporis humani fabrica", the similarly grand production of his most famous pupil, Andreas Vesalius. Although lesser-known as a text than his student's groundbreaking masterpiece, Tagault's "De chirurgica institutione" provides an essential piece of the puzzle in understanding the context in which Vesalius came to break new ground. The book's publishing history uncannily mirrors that of "De fabrica", and several of its anatomical diagrams were in fact plagiarized from the "Tabulae sex" through a chain of events yet to be elucidated. - Although he cannot be held in the same light as his eminent pupil, Tagault was an important figure on the cusp of the Vesalian revolution. O'Malley calls him "one of the few members of the faculty actively interested in anatomical studies" (p. 425) and notes that he was performing public dissections as early as 1535, during the period in which Vesalius studied under him (cf. p. 58). O'Malley also notes a story to the effect that the anatomist Jacobus Sylvius - a successful instructor at the University of Paris, but also terribly jealous of Vesalius's rising star - was responsible for advising Tagault on stylistic changes to improve the presentation of his "De chirurgica institutione". - The five books of Tagault's treatise elaborate the writings of Guy de Chauliac (1300-68) on the surgical aspects of tumors, wounds, hernias, ulcers, fractures, and dislocations. 2 full-page woodcut figures ultimately based on Gersdorff show the wound-man and the extraction of an arrow on the battlefield; a further three, in fact plagiarized from the "Tabulae sex", are found on the two leaves inserted at p. 354 following Tagault's treatise, accompanied by numbered legends in Latin and Greek. The precise circumstances surrounding their appearance in this work are intriguing; their position suggests a late addition, perhaps in a nod to the growing popularity of his former student. According to Cushing, the four chief suspects in the transfer of the woodcuts are the anatomist Louis Vassé, the printers Charles Estienne and Christian Wechel, and Tagault himself. Moritz Roth (Andreas Vesalius Bruxellensis, 1892) indeed traced in detail the extent of the plagiarism and cross-flow of the woodblocks between successive editions of Tagault and Vesalius. - The sixth book contains the first appearance in print of Jacques Houiller's "De materia chirurgica", discussing and illustrating the tools of surgery in use during Vesalian times before Pare and Wurtz. - Like "De fabrica", later editions of "De chirurgica institutione" were issued only in reduced format to make the work more widely accessible; the present first edition is the only printing in folio, presenting its marvellous full-page woodcuts to full effect. The large number of editions which Tagault's text enjoyed during the 16th century certainly rivals that of Vesalius and perhaps suggests that the two texts might have competed on the European stage. - Unlike the first edition of "De fabrica", which is readily obtainable in commerce, we have not traced any copy of the first edition of "De chirurgica institutione" at Anglo-American or German auctions in the last 50 years. It is one of just two editions edited by Tagault himself and published during his lifetime; the second edition (1544) was a much less impressive (and far more commonly-encountered) octavo. - A very good copy, fresh and charming despite a very light dampstain to the upper blank margin of a few leaves.
