‎The Watts Printing Company‎

‎Souvenir .of the Funeral of Our Martyred President William McKinley‎

‎Canton OH: The Watts Printing Co 1901. Presumed First Edition First printing. Stiff card covers tied at left side with black cord. Good. Format is approximately 5 inches by 7 inches. Binding is black cord. 51 leaves plus covers. This consists of black and white photographic illustrations with individual captions. Covers have a few rubs light soiling and short creases. There is a number written in blue ink at lower corner of the rear cover. This rare souvenir album contains captioned photographs of the funeral events honoring the slain McKinley in his hometown of Canton Ohio. One of the photographs of President Theodore Roosevelt and the Cabinet awaiting the arrival of the casket at the Canton Court House. A search of the On-line Catalogue of the Library of Congress on March 27 2021 identified four copies two in Ohio Libraries one at the University of Texas at Austin and one at a Scottish Rites Temple in Massachusetts. Occasionally copies appear briefly on-line and generally are purchased quickly. Thousands who witnessed the funeral procession as it moved from the McKinley home on Market Avenue N to the church services were "Hushed and Broken in Heart" as they watched the cortege. Mrs. McKinley spent a half hour alone with the casket but she would not attend the funeral services instead staying at home the rest of the day. The funeral procession began at the McKinley home at 1:14 p.m. and arrived at the First Methodist Church now Crossroads United Methodist Church at 1:30 p.m. McKinley's body first lay in state for public viewing in Buffalo N.Y. on Sept. 15-16;. The nation focused its attention on the casket that made its way by train first to Washington where it first lay in the East Room of the Executive Mansion and then in state in the Capitol and then was taken to Canton. A hundred thousand people passed by the open casket in the Capitol Rotunda many having waited hours in the rain; in Canton an equal number did the same at the Stark County Courthouse on September 18. The following day a funeral service was held at the First Methodist Church; the casket was then sealed and taken to the McKinley house where relatives paid their final respects. It was then transported to the receiving vault at West Lawn Cemetery in Canton to await the construction of the memorial to McKinley already being planned. The former first lady accompanied her husband on the funeral train. Historian Margaret Leech noted "the circuitous journey was a cruel ordeal for the woman who huddled in a compartment of the funeral train praying that the Lord would take her with her Dearest Love". She was thought too weak to attend the services in Washington or Canton although she listened at the door to the service for her husband in her house on North Market Street. Among organizations that participated in the procession were Canton Commandery No. 38 Knights Templars; The Grand Commandery Knights Templars of Ohio; The Knights Templars of Louisville Kentucky and Pittsburgh; Eagle Lodge No. 431 it would become the McKinley Lodge; The Grand Army Band; and Thayer's Military Band. At the church President Roosevelt occupied the front pew. Behind him were 40 United States senators 120 representatives and many state governors. Honorary pallbearers selected by the family included John C. Dueber George B. Frease R. A. Cassidy William R. Day Joseph Biechele Henry W. Harter William A. Lynch and Thomas McCarty. Widow McKinley remained in Canton for the remainder of her life setting up a shrine in her house and often visiting the receiving vault until her death at age 59 on May 26 1907. She died only months before the completion of the large marble monument to her husband in Canton which was dedicated by President Roosevelt on September 30 1907. William and Ida McKinley are interred there with their daughters atop a hillside overlooking the city of Canton. The Watts Printing Co unknown‎

‎Multiplicity of Scripture, The Making of the Antwerp Polyglot Bible.‎

‎, brepols, 2025 hardcover, 585 pages, Size:152 x 229 mm, Illustrations:8 colour plates, Language(s):English. *New. ISBN 9780888442345.‎

‎The Antwerp Polyglot Bible (1568?1573) has long been recognized as one of the most ambitious typographical enterprises of the sixteenth century. Upon completion, it was the most elaborate Bible ever printed, a library of biblical erudition with editions of the ancient Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac, Greek, and Latin versions together with new scholarly instruments necessary to study and compare them. Yet powerful contemporaries also perceived it as a threat to the Church. The very idea of a polyglot Bible, especially one that included the Hebrew Bible and Aramaic Targums of Jewish tradition, ran counter to the Council of Trent?s decree that the Latin Vulgate was the only authentic version of Christian Scripture. In the middle of the sixteenth century, biblical philology and Catholic orthodoxy turned onto a frightful course of collision, and the pages of the Antwerp Polyglot Bible formed the force field at their crossroads. The Multiplicity of Scripture is the first book-length study of how the Antwerp Polyglot was made. Combining the history of the book with the history of scholarship and drawing on primary sources from archives and libraries across Europe, it reconstructs the editorial history of Christopher Plantin?s masterpiece from within his printing shop. Set in the contexts of fierce biblical controversies in Tridentine Europe and the fraught afterlife of Jewish traditions in post-expulsion Spain, it tells a story of crisis and craftsmanship, of ink-stained proofs in four different alphabets and the extraordinary team of scholars and printers that made this monument of Renaissance printing and scholarly endeavour.‎

[Strasbourg, printer of Henricus Ariminensis (Georg Reyser?), not after 1474].‎

‎Royal folio (273 x 398 mm). Gothic type. 248 ff. (incl. final blank). 49 lines. 2 columns. Contemporary south German decoration: each of 4 books opening with an illuminated initial with extensions; rubricated throughout in red and blue. Modern calf, early index tabs. Editio princeps. Magnificent copy of the rare first edition of one of St. Thomas Aquinas's two masterpieces which systematized Latin theology. The printer is commonly referred to as "the printer of Henricus Ariminensis"; the ISTC suggests the Eichstädt printer Georg Reyser (active until 1503; cf. ADB 28, 368f.) known for his characteristic type, or, following Pellechet, Heinrich Eggestein. - "The combination of theology and philosophy which was the basis of scholasticism found its finest expression in [St. Thomas's] writings. Aquinas held that knowledge came from two sources: the truths of Christian faith and the truths of human reason. Each is a distinct source, but the revelation which comes from faith is the greater of the two, and its chief characteristic is that it consists of mysteries to be believed rather than understood" (PMM 30 for the editio princeps of the 'Summa Theologiae' published in 1485). The 'Summa de veritate catholicae fidei contra gentiles' (Treatise on the Truth of the Catholic Faith, against Unbelievers), written in Rome, 1261-64, was composed at the request of St. Raymond of Pennafort, who desired to have a philosophical exposition and defence of the Christian Faith, to be used against the Jews and Moors in Spain. It is a perfect model of patient and sound apologetics, showing that no demonstrated truth (science) is opposed to revealed truth (faith). It is worthy of remark that the Fathers of the Vatican Council, treating the necessity of revelation (Coast. "Dei Filius", c. 2), employed almost the very words used by St. Thomas in treating that subject in this work (I, cc. iv, V). - First leaf a little defective and repaired, minor marginal repairs in first 4 leaves, small stain at a few extreme upper margins, decoration just shaved. ‎Thomas Clarkson Kentucky Printing‎

‎Very Rare Kentucky Printing of Thomas Clarkson's Foundational Anti-Slavery Text "An Essay on the Slavery and Commerce of the Human Species" 1816‎

‎1816. Slavery and Abolition Clarkson Thomas. An Essay on the Slavery and Commerce of the Human Species Particularly the African 1816 printing one of the foundational intellectual works of the Anglo-American abolitionist movement here issued in a rare Kentucky imprint juxtaposing transatlantic antislavery thought within the slaveholding territories of the American South. Originally published in the late eighteenth century Clarkson's treatise compiled moral economic and documentary evidence against the Atlantic slave trade and became instrumental in mobilizing British abolitionists contributing to the passage of the 1807 Act abolishing the British slave trade. This 1816 Georgetown Kentucky edition demonstrates the continued circulation and influence of British antislavery arguments in the early American republic particularly in a state deeply where slavery was deeply entrenched from the time of its founding. The appearance of this text in Kentucky underscores the gradual growth of abolitionist sentiment reform movements active in the region during the early nineteenth century.

Clarkson Thomas. An Essay on the Slavery and Commerce of the Human Species Particularly the African. In Three Parts. Georgetown KY: J. N. Lytle for Rev. David Barrow 1816. Contemporary sheep binding. Measures approximately 4¼ x 7 inches. Provenance: signed by Helen Love Van Rensselaer. This edition was issued for Reverend David Barrow a prominent Kentucky Baptist minister known for his antislavery convictions reflecting local reform networks committed to circulating abolitionist literature despite prevailing proslavery sentiment. John Winston Coleman author of Slavery Times in Kentucky 1940 and a major collector of Kentucky slavery and abolition materials described this Clarkson imprint as "one of the rarest of Kentucky anti-slavery tracts" attesting to its scarcity within regional print history.

This printing embodies the persistence of organized moral opposition to slavery prior to the Civil War. Clarkson an important figure in the British abolition movement provided reformers with a systematic critique of the slave trade's violence and corruption. The Kentucky edition reflects how transatlantic abolitionist discourse was adapted and disseminated within American slave societies contributing to early nineteenth-century debates that would intensify in the decades preceding the Civil War. Some staining and spotting throughout with minor marginal chipping; binding worn but intact. Overall good only. A significant and regionally scarce Southern imprint of a cornerstone abolitionist text. unknown‎

‎HISTORY OF PRINTING IN AMERICA; WITH A BIOGRAPHY OF PRINTERS & AN ACCOUNT OF NEWSPAPERS.‎

‎pp. xxi, 650 + Frontis. Thick 8vo. Original full cloth binding. Dust jacket; yellowed st the spine and soiled. Hardbound. Very good. Based on the famous 2nd edition (1874), and newly edited by Marcus McCorison, this is really a wonderful book for any fan of early American Printing. From the DJ: "There are very few books of a historical nature which deserve republication after 160 years of existence. Isaiah Thomass History of Printing in America is one of them. His book is still the beginning point for most investigations into the history of American printing, for he provides the tantalizing clues from which his successors have built there own studies. Further, his personal knowledge of many of the people and events which he describes in a frank and unadorned manner makes excellent and often amusing reading. The History of Printing in America retains the essential beginnings which lead the reader into fascinating byways of American history and the craft which in such large measure perpetuated it." PA53‎

‎FIRST EDITION OF THOU'S HISTORY OF THE 16TH CENTURY, A MASTERPIECE OF FRENCH HISTORIOGRAPHY. 18, 684, 36 pp., complete. Jacques-Auguste de Thou (1553-1617), was one of the great statesmen and scholars of his time, and the Historiarum is his most important work. THIS IS THE TRUE FIRST EDITION, printed folio (another edition, in two volumes 8vo--with some large-paper copies printed 4to--was published later the same year). Moreover, the TITLE-PAGE IS IN THE FIRST STATE, which is exceedingly rare. Beautifully printed by Robert Estienne (1559-1630), with the title in red and black and attractive woodcut head- and tail-pieces throughout. Folio. Beautifully bound in recent quarter vellum and marbled boards. FINE AND BRIGHT, both inside and out, with excellent margins and bright white paper. Peignot II, 159 (pointing out that this work was suppressed from the moment of publication). An outstanding copy of a rare and important book: the only other copy I have located of the first edition with the first-state title-page is the Oxford copy.‎

‎Thou, Jacques-Auguste de.‎

‎Hieracosophiou, sive de re accipitraria libri tres. Paris, King’s Printer "in officina Robert Estienne", 1584.‎

‎4to (220 x 150 mm). (4), 95, (13) pp. Half vellum (ca. 1892). First complete edition, in the original Latin, of one of the most famous and longest of De Thou's poems, a didactic verse in about 2780 hexameters devoted to hunting with falcons and other birds of prey, composed in three "libri" and addressed to François, Duke of Alençon, Anjou and Brabant (1555-84), the youngest son of the late King Henri II and Catherine de' Medici, and brother of the reigning King Henri III. It is the first major Latin work on the subject of falconry. Book 1 discusses the various kinds of birds of prey used in falconry and how to choose one, book 2 discusses their care and feeding, training and the practice of hunting with them, and book 3 discusses their medical care. De Thou anonymously published an advance version of books 1 and 2 at Bordeaux in 1582, but his own correspondence indicates that he had only a few copies of that edition printed, primarily to send them to colleagues (including Pierre Pithou, Claude Dupuy and Joseph Scaliger) for their corrections and suggestions. Harvard University has the only known copy of that edition, and De Thou decided not to complete it but instead to make extensive revisions and add the third book for the present edition, beautifully printed by the King’s Printer in Paris. The poem ends on p. 95, with the next page containing an “important” (Harting) note about the various kinds of birds of prey used for falconry and giving their French and Latin names. The last six leaves contain Thou’s 11-page letter to Philippe Huralt (1528-99), French chancellor under King Henri III, on the subject of falconry, and on the last page the corrigenda. Falconry was so popular in France from the reign of François I to that of Louis XIII that it can be considered the national pastime of the French nobility, as well as the prominent clergy, military figures and politicians in that period, 1515-1643. - With a modern armorial bookplate of the Verne d’Orcet family, whose great library on the subject of hunting was begun ca. 1900. Formerly side-stitched through 4 holes, B1 and B4 no longer conjugate but still securely attached, a faint marginal stain in the lower outside corner of the last few leaves and the foot of the title-page slightly thumbed, but still in very good condition and with large margins. The outer free endleaf at front and back slightly browned, but the binding also very good. Adams T 657. Harting 306. Souhart 461. De Smet (ed.), La fauconnerie à la Renaissance: le Hieracosophion, passim (a critical edition and French translation with extensive commentary).
