Moore, Lorrie - RARE SIGNED FIRST PRINTING
Birds of America : Stories
Faber London 1998 SIGNED on the title page no dedication no owner signature just a signed by the author softback original. Text block paper is tanning which is naughty of the publisher ; here is a great book by a renowned writer and Faber choose to print it on cheap pulp. Apart from this foolish decision this is a nicely designed production. The full colour cover is a French flap structure that has a beautiful monochrome photograph underneath it. So a high standard of design and typography but they print it on rubbish paper! Cannot understand why. Language: eng Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng. Mordecai Richler - FIRST PRINTING
The Apprenticeship Of Duddy Kravitz
Andre Deutsch London 1959 This is the first UK printing of the first hardcover edition of the author's very great breakthrough novel filmed with Richard Dreyfuss in the title role. Near Fine publisher's red cloth with no damaged corners and obviously nicely stored inside its jacket because the spine is not the usual faded thing we mostly see with this book. It is such a brilliant novel and it is a wonder there were not more prizes for Richler. Jacket is price clipped and there are some negligible little chips but it is now safe inside a sleeve. Highly collectible and one of the best novels of its time. Andre Deutsch committed the sin of using cheap paper and as with all copies there is some tanning. More, Sir Thomas.
De optimo reip. statu deque nova insula Utopia libellus vere aureus [...]. Basel, (Johann Froben, 1518).
4to. 162 pp., fol. 163-164, (2) pp. (a-s4 t6 u6, without the 'Epigrammata' announced on the title). With woodcut title border and a border in the text by Hans Holbein the younger, 2 woodcuts in the text (1 full-page) by Ambrosius Holbein, and 6 woodcut initials; printer's device on final page. Modern giltstamped full calf. Rare third, revised edition (the first one printed in Basel) of the famous "ideal state" novel that gave its name to a whole literary genre. Edited by Erasmus of Rotterdam, whom More had sent the manuscript in 1516. The second part, about the ideal constitution for a state, was written first, while More was an envoy in Flanders in 1515, while part one was written only in 1516, after his return to England. The two woodcuts by Ambrosius Holbein, Hans's elder brother, include the famous bird's-eye view of the island of Utopia (a full-page illustration) and the charming scene showing the story's fictional traveller, Raphael Hythlodaeus, in discussion with More himself and his Antwerpian friend Peter Gilles (Aegidius), with More's young assistant John Clement (later to become a Royal Physician and More's son-in-law) approaching them. Like 'Gulliver's Travels', Utopia was written "as a tract for the times, to rub in the lesson of Erasmus; it inveighs against the new statesmanship of all-powerful autocracy and the new economics [...], just as it pleads for religious tolerance and universal education [...] More had all Swift's gift for utterly convincing romance: the beginning, when Rafael Hythlodaye recounts his voyages, has a vividness which draws the reader on into the political theory. [More] is a saint to the Catholic, and a predecessor of Marx to the Communist. His manifesto is and will be required reading for both, and for all shades of opinion between" (PMM). - Insignificant browning; endpapers somewhat fingerstained, but a beautiful, clean copy. Handwritten ownership of Gerard van Assendelft, dated 1603, at the top edge of the title-page. VD 16, M 6299. Adams M 1756. Panzer VI, 205, 222. Isaac 14177. Heckethorn 100, 90. Bezzel (Erasmusdrucke) 912. Hieronymus 260. Kat. Basel 1960, 343, 341, 120f. Gibson 3. Van der Haeghen III, 41. Cf. PMM 47.

Moreau le Jeune [Moreau the Younger]; French Engraving and Printing
FIGURES DE L' HISTOIRE DE FRANCE
Paris: Renouard n.d. 1785. This copy with the engraved bookplate of Percy Hamilton Clark perhaps the most famous American cricketer of all time who in 1903 ushered in what has been called the “Golden Age†of cricket in the U.S.A. 167 engraved plates 154 of which are numbered and 13 unnumbered by Moreau the Younger Monnet and Lepicier depicting the history of France and including frameworks for descriptive text of Monsieur l'Abbe' Garnier. Large 8vo 29 by 20.5 cm in handsome antique three-quarter red morocco over marbled boards the spine ornately gilt lettered and decorated. 167 leaves printed on one side only. A very pleasing copy internally very fine and fresh the binding with some light expected evidence of age. A VERY BEAUTIFULLY PRODUCED WORK. This impressive suite of engravings depict the history of France from the inauguration of Pharamond circa 428 to the year 1314. Moreau had intended to carry on with the engraving work and bring the book up to his own time but the project was unfortunately never completed. Renouard hardcover
