‎Summary Long-distance ties connecting Europeans from all geographical corners of the continent during the fifteenth and sixteenth century facilitated the sharing of religious texts, books, iconography, ideas, and practices. The contributions to this book aim to reconstruct these European networks of knowledge exchange by exploring how religious ideas and strategies of transformation 'travelled' and were shared in European and transatlantic cultural spaces. In order to come to a better understanding of Europe-wide processes of religious culture and religious change, the chapters focus on the agency of the laity in 'new communities of interpretation', instead of intellectual elites, the aristocracy, and religious institutions. These new communities of interpretation were often formed by an urban laity active in politics, finance, and commerce. The agency of religious literatures in the European vernaculars in processes of religious purification, reform, and innovation during the long fifteenth century is still largely underestimated. 'Networking Europe' aims to step away from studying 'national' textual production and consumption by approaching these topics instead from a European and interconnected perspective. Marbled endpapers. Extremely rare first edition of this important 16th century description of Muslim Africa, complete with the frequently missing third volume, printed at Malaga. "Ouvrage toujours fort recherché" (Brunet). A native of Granada, Luis Marmol Carvajal (1520-1600) took part in the 1535 Tunis campaign of King Charles V against the Ottoman Empire's Mediterranean forces. He was taken prisoner and spent more than 22 years in North Africa, including seven or eight years as a captive in Morocco, Fez and Tunis, where he learned Arabic. In his work, he gives an historical account of Christian-Muslim conflict, as well as of inter-Muslim strife, from the time of Muhammad until 1571, when Pope Pius V created the "Holy League" to drive Ottoman forces from the eastern Mediterranean. However, Marmol discusses not only military aspects, but also and more specifically Muslim North Africa, the Moorish militias, institutions, and customs, paying particular attention to Spanish commercial interests in these territories. He provides descriptions of many Maghreb cities as well of their various sieges and sacks by the Spanish, Portuguese, Genoese, and the Ottomans. - Corners slightly bumped; the first sheets of the third volume have been washed and pressed. A good copy splendidly rebound in the 19th century, with fine provenance: from the library of the great Spanish historian Emilio Lafuente y Alcántara (1825-68), with his signature in vols. 1 and 2. Later in the library of Feliciano Ramirez de Arellano, Marqués de la Fuensanta del Valle (1826-96), founder of the Society of Spanish Libraries, with his armorial bookplate to all pastedowns; additional bookplate of the bibliographer Antonio Moreno Martin of Almería (d. 1990) to the third volume. ‎Édition en lettres gothiques batardes de la Veuve Trepperel partagée avec Jehannot, en second tirage distinct du premier tirage par son titre (Les Vigilles du Roy Charles contre S'ensuyt les Vigilles du Roy Charles) et par l'explicit où le nom de Jehannot est mentionné.Précieux exemplaire comportant une lettre autographe en anglais signée du grand poète et dramaturge anglais Robert Browning (1812-1899), datée du 16 décembre 1887 et adressée à Madame Elton pour remercier Monsieur Elton son mari (dont l'ex-libris est collé sur le premier contreplat) de lui avoir confié cet ouvrage dont la lecture lui fut néanmoins difficile. Titre en rouge et noir illustré d'un bois gravé sous-titré Le lis de justice suivi au verso du titre d'un grand bois gravé pleine page représentant Charles VII gisant, ce dernier répété au verso du dernier feuillet.Les Vigiles de Charles VII, long poème composé entre 1477 et 1483 à la louange du feu roi Charles VII comprend neuf psaumes et neuf leçons alternant par groupes de trois. Les psaumes en quatrains d'octosyllabes forment une chronique de la vie de Charles VII (1402-1461), versifiée sur les données des chroniques du héraut Berry et de Jean Chartier, truffée d'exempla empruntés au Livre de bonnes meurs de Jacques Legrand et au Jeu des échecs moralisés de Jacques de Cessoles, traduction de Jean Ferron. Les leçons sorte d'intermèdes lyriques à la chronique, mettent dans la bouche de France, Noblesse, Labour ou Marchandise, les regrets du bon vieux temps ; écrites dans des mètres variés, elles ne manquent pas d'agrément.
