‎Summary This volume concentrates on how the sermon, a pivotal element in mass communication, aimed to shape the people of Europe. Rather than setting up the usual binary divides, it highlights the linguistic complications, the textual inter-relationships, the confessional cross-currents, and the variations between public and private sermon dissemination operating at different rates and with variable results throughout Europe. Effectively the emphasis here is on how Catholic preachers and Catholic preaching carried on in the period between the handwritten and the printed sermon, a time when not only the mode of production was changing but when the very purpose and meaning of preaching itself would soon alter in a western Christian world that was becoming no longer completely Catholic. By examining case-studies chosen from countries with contrasting manuscript and printing traditions (Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Low Countries, Romania, Spain, and Sweden), we aim to examine some of the main historical, literary, and theological factors in the development of the sermon in Latin and the vernaculars, which is itself in the process of changing formats, and sometimes languages, at a time of religious ferment from the advent of print to the death of Martin Luther. These essays, which are effectively in dialogue with each other, are divided into geographical/linguistic sections organized along broadly chronological lines. They circulate from the peripheries of Europe to the centre, moving from areas where evidence is now scarce to situations of thriving production. ‎Édition originale de l'un des deux premiers livres imprimés à Béziers millésimes 1612.Très rare impression biterroise sortie des presses de Jean Pech Ier venu de Toulouse à la demande du chapitre de Béziers pour imprimer en 1612 les ordonnances et décrets du concile provincial tenu à Narbonne en 1609 présidés par Louis de Vervins, archevêque de Narbonne et président des États-généraux du Languedoc. L'impression des actes du concile fut longtemps considérée comme le premier ouvrage imprimé dans cette ville. Desgraves (Bibliotheca Aureliana) le fait précéder cependant de la très rare "Aureole de la Ires Saincte Vierge Mere de Dieu (..) en sa chapelle (..) nostre Dame du Grau d'Agde" imprimé sous la même date (unique exemplaire à Rodez, Bibliotheca Aureliana n°97, p. 17) ; Jean Pech, premier imprimeur installé à Béziers, exerça de 1612 à 1642. Titre orné d'une roulette en encadrement, aux armes de Louis de Vervins (Carpentras, 4 août 1557 - Narbonne, 8 février 1628) archevêque de Narbonne de 1600 à 1628 qui introduit dans son diocèse les Prêtres de la doctrine chrétienne et les Carmélites et réunit un concile provincial en avril 1609 ; il fit également fonction d'« administrateur spirituel » du diocèse de Béziers pendant la minorité de l'évêque Thomas II de Bonsi. ‎Folio (319 x 456 mm). 355 leaves and two folding sheets. Roman and italic types, occasional use of Greek and Hebrew types, printed shoulder notes. Woodcut pictorial title, author portrait, and printer’s device; 7 large, 186 mid-sized, and 22 small woodcut initials; more than 200 woodcut illustrations, including 3 full-page skeletons, 14 full-page muscle men, 5 large diagrams of veins and nerves, 10 mid-sized views of the abdomen, 2 mid-sized views of the thorax, 13 mid-sized views of the skull and brain, and numerous smaller views of bones, organs and anatomical parts. All woodcuts and initials up to page 165 in full contemporary hand colour. Contemporary blindstamped leather over wooden boards with bevelled edges, on five raised double bands, with two clasps. In custom-made solander box. A truly outstanding copy of one of the greatest and most appealing books in the history of science. Preserved in its original binding with the blindstamped initials of its first owner, the German physician Caspar Neefe (1514-79), and with his handwritten annotations throughout, the present copy is partly coloured by a contemporary artist (including the iconic woodcut used as title-page and all anatomical illustrations up to page 165). Caspar Neefe, who later served as personal physician to Duke Albert I of Saxony, acquired the precious volume only a year after its publication and obviously consulted it extensively throughout his career as a medical practitioner. - With the publication of "De humani corporis fabrica" (when he was only twenty-eight) Vesalius revolutionized both the science of anatomy and how it was taught. In his preface he describes his disappointing experiences as a student in Paris and Louvain, stating his intention to reform the teaching of anatomy by giving in this book a complete description of the structure of the human body, thereby drawing attention "to the falsity of Galen’s pronouncements". Vesalius also broke with tradition by performing dissections himself instead of leaving this task to assistants: the striking and dramatic title illustration shows him conducting such a dissection, his hand plunged into a female cadaver (striking in itself, as only the cadavers of executed criminals could be dissected legally and female criminals were rarely executed), surrounded by a seething mass of students. - The "Fabrica" is also revolutionary for "its unprecedented blending of scientific exposition, art and typography" (Norman). The woodcuts by artists of the school of Titian are both iconographically and artistically important. The series of fourteen muscle men show landscapes that, when assembled in reverse order, form a panorama of the Euganean Hills near Padua, a scenery well known to Vesalius while he was at work on the Fabrica. - Of the few copies of the first edition to have come to the market in recent decades, only two were in a contemporary binding. Apart from Vesalius's dedication copy to Emperor Charles V (Christie's New York, 18 March 1998, lot 213: $1,652,500), only a single other partly coloured copy was previously known, a list to which ours must now be added as the third known copy in contemporary colour. - Acquired in 2017; previously in a Tyrolean private medical collection, where the book rested for three generations (erased circular library stamp in the blank lower margin of the title-page). An outstanding copy hitherto unknown to scholarship (cf. the recent census published by Dániel Margócsy, University of Cambridge, below; further relevant correpondence with Dr Margócsy is available upon request). Occasional waterstaining to margins, the splendid binding a little rubbed and bumped, but altogether a wonderfully crisp, wide-margined copy of the first edition. Unquestionably the most desirable copy of a milestone in the history of science still in private hands, and likely the most important medical book obtainable for decades to come. PMM 71. ‎Edition originale collective des travaux de Vicq d’Azyr avec un discours de Moreau sur sa vie et ses ouvrages, très remanié et augmenté par rapport à celui qu’il avait précédemment publié ; Moreau fut le collaborateur et le continuateur de l’ouvrage “Médecine” en 13 volume in-4° publié de 1787 à 1830. Fondateur de l’anatomie comparée, il mena des recherches fondamentales sur le cerveau et donna son nom au “faisceau de Vicq d’Azyr”, le tractus mamillothalanicus; il a collaboré à l’Encyclopédie ; il a imaginé la laryngotomie intercrico-thyroïdienne; et ses travaux ont conduit à plusieurs découvertes et progrès médicaux par la suite. Il fut le premier médecin de Marie-Antoinette et médecin consultant de Louis XVI, à ce titre, il soigna le jeune dauphin qui était malade alors qu’il était détenu dans la prison du Temple, mais décéda lui-même juste avant le jeune prince. Enfin, il faut noter que Vicq d’Azyr fonda la société Royale de Médecine avec Lassone, il en devint même le Secrétaire perpétuel ; il fut membre de l’Académie des Sciences et fut le premier médecin élu à l’Académie Française, en 1788, au siège de Buffon. Bel exemplaire, bien frais d’intérieur et dans une belle reliure uniforme du temps.‎

Bien entendu, l’ouvrage imprimé dans les caves de l’ambassade de France à Péra, fut souscrit par tout le corps diplomatique alors en place; l’imprimerie avait été créée par Choiseul-Gouffier en 1787 et cet ouvrage serait le quatrième connu a être sorti de ces presses. Restauration aux mors, cachets de la bibliothèque dispersée en partie gommés, bon état général.‎

‎Édition originale tirée à très petit nombre sur papier de guimauve des oeuvres du marquis de Villette dédiées au marquis Ducrest ; elle a été publiée à l'initiative de Pierre Alexandre Léorier Delisle (1774-1826) dont les expérimentations de papier sont restées célèbres et imprimée par le Montargois Claude Lequatre, tenu à la discrétion pour avoir été sévèrement condamné en 1777 dans une affaire de libelles séditieux. Léorier dirigea la papeterie de Langlée près de Montargis puis créa toujours dans le Gatinais en 1784 une manufacture de papier à Bûges où il chercha de nouveaux procédés de fabrication pour démontrer l’usage possible de végétaux dans la fabrication du papier, en lieu et place du chiffon employé jusqu'alors dont il rend compte dans l'épître dédicatoire : « J'ai soumis à la fabrication du papier toutes les plantes, les écorces et les végétaux les plus communs. Les échantillons qui sont à la fin de ce volume ne sont que des extraits de mes expériences. J'ai voulu prouver qu'on pouvait substituer aux matières ordinaires du papier, qui deviennent chaque jour plus rares, d'autres matières les plus inutiles ». Il soumit ses procédés à l'Académie des sciences, revendiquant son invention contre les prétentions de l'Allemand Schaeffer dont les échantillons comportent une forte addition de chiffon et de colle.Ce précieux livre fut imprimé soit sur papier de guimauve (cet exemplaire) soit sur papier d'écorce de tilleul - certains exemplaires furent tirés sur papier chiffon teinté bleu ou rose. L'exemplaire est complet des 20 feuillets d'échantillons de papier végétal qui font parfois défaut : échantillons de papier de guimauve, d'ortie, de houblon, de mousse, de roseaux, de conferva (première, deuxième et troisième espèces), de racines de chiendent, de bois de coudrier, de bois de fusain, d'écorces de fusain, de chêne, de peuplier, d'osier, d'orme, de saule, de bardanne, de bardane et de pas-d'ane, de chardons.Provenance : Guillaume, avocat à Besançon. Eines der am häufigsten gedruckten Schulbücher; erstmals 1539 in Paris gedruckt; Estelrich zählt bis ins 18. Jh. über 200 Ausgaben. "25 Schülergespräche, die an Auflagenzahl, Kommentierungen und Übersetzungen gemessen, sich in ganz Westeuropa größter Beliebtheit erfreuten. [...] Das Werk ist Philipp II. gewidmet und soll Knaben zum Erlernen der lateinischen Sprache dienen, deren Kenntnis erst den Zugang zur Wissenschaft eröffne, wie es im Widmungsbrief des Verfassers heißt" (Brüggemann). Juan Luis Vives (1492-1540) war einer der berühmtesten spanischen Humanisten und Pädagogen; mit Erasmus und Budaeus bildete er das literarische Triumvirat seiner Zeit. 1523-28 war er Erzieher am Hof Heinrich VIII. von England und seit 1528 bis zu seinem Tode schriftstellerisch in Brügge tätig. "Seine Hauptbedeutung liegt in seinen pädagogischen Schriften. Im Allgemeinen lassen sich fast alle leitenden Principien der neuen Pädagogik auf Vives zurückführen, aber hoch überragt dieser die meisten Pädagogen durch die Betonung der Einheit von Unterricht und Erziehung" (Wetzer/W. XII, 1024ff.). - Die vorliegende Bearbeitung ist mit einem Kommentar und Worterklärungen (teils mit deutschen Übersetzungen) zu jedem Schülergespräch versehen von Johann Thomas Freige (1543-83), einem Philosophen und Anhänger des Ramus, geboren in Freiburg und längere Zeit in Basel tätig (vgl. ADB VII, 341ff.). Solche Kommentierungen waren für Vives' "Exercitatio" typisch: "Vives beabsichtigte mit seinem Werke, den Schülern für den gesamten Bereich des täglichen Lebens in Schule und Haus bis in die kleinsten Teile hinein mit den richtigen lateinischen Bezeichnungen an die Hand zu gehen, und er zog deshalb mit peinlicher Sorgfalt alle nur denkbaren Dinge und Verhältnisse in die Gespräche hinein. Wenn der Sprachschatz seiner Zeit erschöpft war, holte er neues Material aus den technischen Schriften der Alten; genügte das Lateinische nicht, so wurde das Griechische herangezogen und, wo auch dieses nicht ausreichte, zu neuen Bildungen nach der Analogie geschritten. Diese wohlanzuerkennende Absicht des Humanisten, eine möglichst weitgehende praktische Verwendung der lateinischen Sprache zu ermöglichen, brachte aber auch einen Vives nicht ohne Grund zum Vorwurf gemachten Uebelstand mit sich, dass nämlich die Lektüre der Schrift durch die fast erdrückende Fülle des Materials zu sehr erschwert wird. Um das Verständnis zu erleichtern, [...] schrieb [man] Erklärungen der schwierigen Worte und Stellen, oder man setzte neben den lateinischen Text eine Uebersetzung in der Sprache seines Landes" (Bömer, 163ff.). - Neuausgabe der 1582 bei Gerlach gedruckten Ausgabe durch Paul Kauffmann (1568-1632), der die Berg-Gerlachsche Offizin 1594 übernahm (vgl. ‎(4), CXXV, (1) Bll. With two-part armorial woodcut on title-page and 27 woodcuts in the text (8 by H. Schäufelein, 15 (?) by H. Weiditz). Modern marbled boards. Folio (212 x 304 mm). First German edition of "the first systematic study to address explicitly and exclusively the universal education of women", at the same time a fine and rare woodcut book. Commissioned by the wife of Henry VIII, Catherine of Aragon, who was at the time rearing her own daughter, Mary Tudor, Vives' treatise was translated and adapted by numerous followers (here by the Bavarian Humanist Christopher Bruno) and thus was read in almost every European vernacular, often by women themselves. The present translation is dedicated to Maria Jacobaea of Baden-Sponheim (1507-80), duchess consort of Bavaria, and to her daughter Mechthild of Bavaria (1532–65). - Vives' work consists of 3 books, one for each stage of woman's life: maidenhood, marriage, and widowhood. Although the author specifically adapted his prose style for a female readership, the treatise is hardly pro-woman: "the 'Education' is determined to be both a reference book for men on how to control their women, as well as an edifying treatise for women to absorb as a source of proper behaviour" (Kolsky). Nevertheless, Vives' praise of women's intellectual capacity and his advocation of some form of universal learning for females are viewed as landmarks for modern historians of women and gender. According to Pollie Bromilow, the dozens of vernacular translations were partly aimed at women themselves, who had no knowledge of Latin; and thus a large segment of its readership during the 16th century was in fact female. - Even browning and brownstaining throughout due to paper stock; some light waterstains. A few leaves show repairs in the lower margin and occasionally beyond, and a single leaf has a larger part torn out from the outer margin (no loss to text). - A fundamental document for the role of women in Early Modern society; only two copies in the trade since 1935. De Boisqermain Anno Salutis 1768 [offert par le marquis de Richard (Marchioni de Ricardi ?) au Chevalier de Boisqermain], probablement l'instituteur et éditeur alors âgé d'une trentaine d'années Pierre-Joseph-François Luneau de Boisjermain (Issoudun 1731 - Paris 1801) qui ouvrit à Paris des cours publics de grammaire, d'histoire et de géographie, où il eut de nombreux élèves grâce à des méthodes nouvelles - connu par ailleurs pour ses démêlés avec les éditeurs de l'Encyclopédie après 1770.« Sous le titre de Vrais principes de la lecture, de l'orthographe et de la prononciation française, Viard, maître de pension, avait composé un traité élémentaire de lecture et de langue ; Luneau de Boisjermain refondit ce livre et en donna plusieurs éditions successives, en 1773, en 1778, en 1783, en l'an VI, etc. De 1783 à 1789, Luneau fit paraître successivement un Cours de langue italienne, un Cours de langue anglaise et un Cours de langue latine. « Ces trois cours, dit M. Weiss, publiés d'abord chaque quinzaine par cahiers, sous le titre de Journal d'éducation, offrent une des meilleures applications que l'on ait faites des judicieux principes posés par Radonvilliers dans la Manière d'apprendre les langues. Ils eurent beaucoup de succès dans leur nouveauté. » L'auteur a expliqué de la façon suivante, dans une préface, les avantages de sa méthode, qui repose essentiellement sur l'étude directe d'un auteur (le Tasse pour l'italien, Milton pour l'anglais, César et Virgile pour le latin), interprété au moyen d'une version interlinéaire » (Buisson). Bel exemplaire.
