Fronsperger, Lienhart.
Fünff Bücher von Kriegs Regiment und Ordnung [...]. (Frankfurt am Main, David Zöpfel), 1558.
Folio (222 x 332 mm). (6), 131 ff., final blank f. With 20 woodcuts in the text. - (Bound with) II: Floridus (Sabinus), Franciscus. Kriegsübung dess fürtrefflichsten und streitbarsten ersten Römischen Kaisers Julii [...]. Strasbourg, Hans Knobloch & Georg Messerschmidt, 1551. (4), 153 ff., final blank f. - (Bound with) III: Stumpf, Johannes. Keyser Heinrychs des vierdten Hertzogen zu Francken und am Rhyn etc. fünfftzigjärige Historia [...]. Zurich, Christoph Froschauer (the Elder), 1556. (10), 134 (instead of 137) ff. With 104 woodcuts in the text. Contemporary blindstamped leather on four raised double bands with two clasps; handwritten title to uppermost spine compartment. Second edition of one of the 16th century's most important treatises on warfare and military history, previously published in 1555. The fine woodcuts are not by Jost Amman, as are those of his well-known and similarly titled "Kriegsbuch", but rather were cut by an unidentified artist after drawings by Virgil Solis. - Bound with this rare and well-preserved work are two other contemporaneous editions of (military) historiography: Heinrich von Eppendorff's German translation of "De C. Iulii Caesaris praestantia" by Franciscus Floridus in a fine Strasbourg impression, and a Swiss chronicle of the times and rule of Emperor Henry IV (1050-1106), characterized by intense conflicts with the Pope (lacking the final three leaves and blank, containing "Ein Sendtbrieff Sant Ulrychen, Graaffen zu Kyburg"). - Slight browning throughout, waterstaining to gutter near the end. Handwritten ownership of N. V. Wernsdorff, dated 1559, on front pastedown, with note about his having passed away in Denmark and a slightly later ownership by Degenhard Grimm. Latterly in the library of the Viennese collector Werner Habel (1939-2015) with his handwritten and stamped ownership, dated 1978, to flyleaf. Binding well preserved with finely roll-tooled designs to covers; both clasps intact. I: VD 16, F 3129. Adams F 1075. Jähns 549. Not in BM-STC German. - II: VD 16, F 1675. Adams F 636. Muller II, 340, 58 & III, 443, 27. Ritter 872. Not in BM-STC German. - III: VD 16, S 9869. BM-STC German 839. Not in Adams.

Frontier Printing & Mailing Co
Our Changing Point of View
Cheyenne WY: Frontier Printing & Mailing Co 1969. Presumed First Edition First printing. Booklet. Good. Approximately 8 inches by 5.25 inches. 8 pages including covers. Cover has some wear and soiling. Some page discoloration. Most of the work is pictorial with one large image on most pages with caption/text at the bottom of the page. This booklet reproduces original photographs from the Apollo 8 mission. This publication was both a tribute to the important step of man's march to the stars and it was also a commercial. It was the technological advances that permitted the space journeys that were pictured in this booklet. In their own way printed communications have utilized their advances to help people tell their story better. The reproduction of these photographs in two or three colors is typical of the abilities of Frontier Printing & Mailing Co. These abilities keep pace in this ever changing and advancing world. Frontier Printing and Mailing asked to have the opportunity to show potential customers how their creativity combined with modern equipment can improve a customer's communication of the printed word. The billed themselves as The Down-To-Earth Idea People! This booklet was printed by Dynamation using a Harris 23" by 29" press. IT is rare for this type of ephemeral marketing material to survive more than half a century. The production of this Space oriented marketing booklet was an indication of the capabilities and vision of the owners. We researched to see if this firm was still in business and it is. Vision Graphics Inc. as we know it today was founded by Francis E Brooks in 1952 as Frontier Lettershop in Cheyenne WY. Frontier evolved from an earlier startup in the employment agency business which was sold to an employee. Frontier grew over the years with name changes to Frontier Printing and Mailing and then back to Frontier Printing Inc. The company was sold to some staff in the early 1980's and four years later was reacquired by its founder. In 1986 Mr. Brooks recruited his nephew Mark Steputis into the business. Mark had graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in marketing. As the years went by Mark got more involved with the management of the company and was promoted to Vice President and by 1995 was named President of the company. Mark acquired ownership of the company in 1996 after his uncle's passing. At this point the company was marketing its services to a wider and wider geographic area and the bulk of the work was coming from Northern Colorado companies while the company remained in Cheyenne WY. The company grew quickly and Vision became a dominate player in the rocky mountain market with business across the country. Frontier Printing & Mailing Co unknown

Galenus (Galen), Claudius.
De medicamentorum compositione secundum locos, libri decem, nunc primum in lucem editi. Venice, (Luca Antonio Giunta), 1536.
8vo. (24), 207, (1) ff. With Giunta's woodcut device on title-page and repeated on the otherwise blank last leaf. Modern brown morocco. Second edition, the first printed by Giunta, of Galen's "On the composition of medicine according to locality", edited and translated into Latin by Johann Winter von Andernach (1505-74). Andernach's translation was first printed in the previous year in Paris by Simon Colines. "There is no name more illustrious in the whole history of medicine than that of Galen [...] Written in Greek, this Galenic treasure reached the Latin Western World only through Arabic translations" (Hagelin). - The recipes, mostly taken from earlier authorities such as Andromachus, Asclepiades, Pharmacion, Archigenes and others, are arranged from head to foot, starting with ailments of the hair, head, ears and nose, eyes, face and teeth, and mouth, and continuing down the body through the respiratory tract, stomach and liver, genitalia, kidney and bladder, and ending with sciatica and gout of the feet. - "During the 1530s the eminent printer, Luca Antonio Giunta (1517-37), decided to publish a comprehensive edition of Galen's works in Latin so that physicians would no longer have to rely on writings from Greek and Arabic sources. Montanus, who led the editorial effort, chose many noted authorities and scholars to aid in the massive undertaking" (Heirs of Hippocrates). Giunta's editions of Galen are considered the most import together with those of Aldus, and together with those Froben considered the most readable. - With the stamp of the Birmingham University library bindery on the end pastedown. Some underscoring and early manuscript annotations. Some wormholes through the title-page and smaller ones through a few following leaves, dampstains throughout and one leaf with a tear; a fair copy. Durling, A chronological census of renaissance editions and translations of Galen 1536.9. Durling 1862. USTC 831429. Wellcome I, 2564. Cf. DSB V, pp. 227-235; Garrison, History of medicine, pp. 116f.; Hagelin, Rare and important medical books, pp. 12-15; Heirs of Hippocrates 37.

Galenus (Galen), Claudius.
Deux livres des simples de Galien. Lyon, Etienne Dolet, 1542.
8vo. "162" [= 163], (1) pp. With a woodcut device on title-page and a larger version on the last page, both partly coloured by hand. Rubricated throughout. 19th-century vellum. First edition of a French translation from the Greek by the French physician Jean Canappe, of two chapters (5 and 9) from Galen's pharmaceutical work later translated into Latin as the De simplicium medicamentorum facultatibus. Canappe would publish a full translation a few years later as Le livre des simples (1545). - "There is no name more illustrious in the whole history of medicine than that of Galen [...] Written in Greek, this Galenic treasure reached the Latin Western World only through Arabic translations" (Hagelin). - With the bookplate of Etienne Récamier (1833-98), Bibliothèque Lyonnaise 1858-93, some partly removed owner's inscriptions on title-page and a few other inscriptions throughout. Some occasional smudges and stains, but otherwise in good condition. Durling, A chronological census of renaissance editions and translations of Galen 1542.11. Krivatsy, Suppl. 16th century, 86. USTC 24275. Not in Wellcome. Cf. DSB V, pp. 227-235; Hagelin, Rare and important medical books, pp. 12-15.
