Holroyd, Michael- RARE SIGNED FIRST PRINTING
Bernard Shaw No. II : Pursuit of Power 1898-1918
Chatto & Windus 1989 Extremely RARE SIGNED FIRST PRINTING of the second volume of Holroyd's masterpiece. The first printings are pretty rare anyway but a signed one is truly scarce. NOT A LIBRARY COPY. Not remaindered. In fact this Near Fine hardback looks to be unread although there is one tiny nick at the very base of the spine which could be a manufacturing fault. The binding is beautiful beneath the jacket the gilt signature of Bernard Shaw is bright the spine is unbroken and the bright blue and gold title rectangle is superb. The book is in a protected Fine unclipped jacket and the elusive signature is directly written boldly without a message on the title page. An unusual book perfect for the collector. HORNBY (Thomas)
Dissertation on Lime, and its use and abuse in Agriculture, embracing a view of its chemical effects, illustrated by collateral remarks and observations.
First edition, 27, [1]pp., presentation inscription from the author at head of title-page (slightly cropped), text lightly age toned, disbound. The rare first edition by the York surgeon who was a member of the Royal College of Surgeons. "I have been unable to find a copy of the first edition... the second edition of which was printed by J. Harding, 8vo, London 1814, a third edition being issued by the same printer in 1821... dismissed as "not likely to have added much to the knowledge of the subject". Perhaps that was not the object. It may only have been to advise a limited public of what he thought. Hornby was a friend of Dr. Hunter, and he had a very real appreciation of the value of the developing science of chemistry to the farmer."?Fussell. Rider Haggard; Henry George; Margaret Sangster; Harriet Prescott Spofford; Albion Tourgee; Ella Wheeler Wilcox; Edward Everett Hale; Hans Christian Andersen; Thomas Carlyle; Will Carleton; Edward Everett Hale; William Lloyd Garrison; and many others. Books in parts are works which were published piecemeal (mainly in the 19th century) over a period of months or years. Each unit usually having a separate magazine-like cover. This method of publishing benefited the publisher as it was thought that the price of a weekly or monthly part at one shilling or a quarter was affordable to a wider readership than the price of pound sterling or $ 5.00 for a bound volume. They also qualified for mailing at a cheaper rate. Since they were meant to be bound by the purchaser, very few have survived into our present era. This edition apparently not in Arents (1957). Complete sets in this form are RARE. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! PARTS 1
