Ibn Ezra, Abraham ben Me'ir / D'Abano, Pietro.
Abrahe Avenaris Judei Astrologi peritissimi in re iudiciali opera [...]. (Venice, Peter Liechtenstein, 31 May 1507).
4to (164 x 208 mm). XCVI ff. (fol. Z4 blank). With numerous woodcut initials, many hand-coloured. Gothic type. 19th century full armorial calf, rebacked, with giltstamped red morocco spine label. First collected Latin edition of the astrological works of Abraham Ibn Ezra. "A versatile genius with a charming Hebrew style, Ibn Ezra disseminated rationalistic and scientific Arabic learning in France, England and Italy [... He] wrote a number of astrological works (Steinschneider lists more than fifty) that were very popular and were translated into many languages. Two were printed in Latin in 1482 and 1485, respectively; and all of them appeared in Latin in 1507 [...] They are rich in original ideas and in the history of scientific subjects" (DSB). "Of an eclectic bent, he inclined towards Neoplatonism and does not entirely disavow astrology [...] Ezra had considerable knowledge of astronomy, and he produced numerous horoscopes and chronological calculations" (cf. Jüdisches Lexikon II, 526f.). - Born in Tudela, in Moorish Spain, Ibn Ezra traveled extensively throughout the Middle East, and had a great outpouring of written works after about 1140, comprising poetry, commentary on the Torah, works on Hebrew grammar, philosophy, and science. His scientific works on astrology were written when he lived in Beziers, France, between 1147 and 1148. - Extensive early ink marginalia, underlinings and manicules throughout. Light dampstaining to outside lower corners, light scattered browning and spotting. - Provenance: Bound in the later 19th century for Robert Loyd-Lindsay, 1st Baron Wantage (1832-1901), co-founder of the British Red Cross, with his arms stamped in gilt to both covers. Subsequently acquired by the Danish-born astronomer Johan Ludvig Emil Dreyer (1852-1926), long established as an historian of science in Ireland and later at Oxford (his bookplate to the front pastedown). Latterly in the library of the noted Russian-American photographer and biologist Roman Vishniac (1897-1990). Adams A 38. BM-STC Italian 2. Steinschneider I, col. 687f., no. 77. Fürst I, 256. Ibn Rushd (Averroes).
Collectaneorum de re medica, post Aristotelem atque Galenum facilè doctissimi, sectione tres. I. De sanitate functionibus, ex Aristot. et Galeno. II. De sanitate tuenda, ex Galeno. III. De curandis morbis. A Joanne Bruyerino Campegio, prudentissimi, litteratissimique Cardinalis Turnonii medico, nunc primùm Latinitate donatae. Lyon, apud Seb. Gryphium, 1537.
4to (155 x 217 mm). (72) ff. With woodcut printer's device to title-page. Contemporary blindstamped full calf on 5 raised bands. All edges faded red. First edition of this Latin translation, from the original Arabic, of books II, VI, and VII of the collection of medical texts referred to under the title of "Colliget" (from its Arabic title "Kulliyyât"), written by the great Muslim physician Ibn Rushd (1126-98, Averroes in the Latin tradition). - This translation is important not only for being the first Averroes version given by a French translator, namely the physician and humanist Jean-Baptiste Bruyerin Champier, but also for containing one of the first defences of the part taken by Al-Andalus Arab intellectuals in the transmission of Greek philosophy in Europe. In his introduction, Champier writes: "When the great flourishing of learning collapsed in Athens, and Gothic barbarity invaded the Roman empire, some Greek books of both the philosophers and the physicians migrated to the Arabs, including the Moors and the Spanish ... especially the books of Aristotle and Galen ... Then it happened that the Arabs translated many volumes of both authors from Greek into their own language. For it is known that the Arabs were most zealous in the study of the humanities, with the result that Averroes, Alfarabi, Avicenna and innumerable others of the same period philosophized on the basis of these books ... and they wholly concentrated on this effort and poured all the force of their intellect into writing interpretations and explanations of both authors. But when Spain was ruled by Alfonso, who had a great thirst for texts, especially in mathematics, since the Moors still held Andalusia, it was easy ... for the books of Averroes and others ... to be brought to Northern Spain where they were put into Latin" (fol. A3v, transl. C. Burnett). - The first part contains the description of the human body's functions and organs (with chapters dedicated to the brain and the spinal cord). The second part deals with the rules of healthy life, while the third exposes the principles of curing diseases. - Some foxing and wrinkling. First leaves slightly loosened. A good, appealingly bound copy of a rarely seen book, last offered at auction in 1984. Adams A 2312. Durling 373. Wellcome I, 568 (lacking last leaf). Baudrier VIII, 101. Gültlingen, Bibliographie des livres imprimés à Lyon V, 74. Atkinson, Medical Bibliography (1834), p. 67. Not in Osler, Cushing, or Waller. For the role of Arabs in the transmission of Greek philosophy see Charles Burnett, "Mont Saint-Michel or Toledo: Greek or Arabic Sources for Medieval European Culture?" (2009).

Ibn Sina (Avicenna) / Da Monte, Giovanni Battista.
In primi lib. canonis Avicenna primam fen, profundissima commentaria. Adiecto nuper secundo, quod numquam antea fuerat typis excusum; de membris capite. Venice, Vincenzo Valgrisi & Baldassarre Costantini, 1558.
8vo. (32), 651, (1) pp. Contemporary half vellum over pigskin with handwritten spine title and shelfmark. Second posthumous edition (by Giano Matteo Durastante) of the extensive commentary on book (kitab) 1, part (fen) 1 of Avicenna's systematic "Canon of Medicine" by one of the leading Renaissance humanist physicians of Italy, Giambattista da Monte (1498-1551), first published in 1557. A corrected and enlarged edition of the work previously edited by W. Lublin and published in Venice in 1554. "The newly added chapter De membris (p. 553-605) is followed by 2 others: De facultatibus and De virtutibus naturalibus ministrantibus" (Durling). - Avicenna's Arabic "Qanun" was widely translated throughout the Middle Ages and remained the basis of medical training in the West as late as the mid-17th century. It continues in use to this day in parts of the Arab world. Through this encyclopedic work, the author exerted "perhaps a wider influence in the eastern and western hemispheres than any other Islamic thinker" (PMM). "The 'Qanun' [...] contains some of the most illuminating thoughts pertaining to distinction of mediastinitis from pleurisy; contagious nature of phthisis; distribution of diseases by water and soil; careful description of skin troubles; of sexual diseases and perversions; of nervous ailments" (Sarton, Introduction to the History of Science). The present part offers a definition of medicine and is mainly dedicated to a discussion of the four humours and temperaments. - Binding slightly wormed; vellum somewhat creased. Paper occasionally wormed and waterstained. Edit 16, CNCE 15945. Wellcome I, 4428. OCLC 1157690416. Cf. Durling 3273, Adams M 1681 (1557 ed.), PMM 11. Ibn Sina (Avicenna) / Mantino, Jacob (transl.).
Avicennae quarta fen primi libri de universali ratione medendi. Nunc primum M. Iacob Mantini medici hebrei opera Latinate donata. (Venice, Lucantonio Giunta, 8 April 1530).
8vo. 60 ff. With Giunta's device on the title-page (a Florentine lily with the L. A. initials). Later vellum with more recent end leaves. First edition of Jacob Mantino's translation into Latin of the fourth part of the first book of Ibn Sina's Canon of Medicine (original title: al-Qanun fi at-Tibb), divided into 31 chapters. Mantino dedicated it to the Doge of the Venetian Republic, Andrea Gritti (1455-1538). - Jacob Mantino (1490-1549) was a Jewish doctor, rabbi and philosopher. He was born in Spain, but he, his family and the Jewish community in Tortosa were forced to flee after refusing Catholic baptism, as decreed by King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I of Spain. Mantino grew up in Italy and studied philosophy and medicine at the universities of Bologna and Padua. Most of his adult life was spent being a doctor to the pope and other prominent members of society like cardinals, bishops and ambassadors in Bologna, Verona, Venice and Rome. He was also involved in the (religious) controversy over Henry VIII's divorce from Catharine of Aragon. In 1549, just before his death, he moved to Damascus as ambassador of Venice. Mantino's intellectual production focused on the translation of scientific works from Hebrew and Arabic into Latin, especially medical and philosophical treatises by leading authors of the medieval period, including Moses ben Maimon (Maimonides), Ibn Rushd (Averroes), and Ibn Sina (Avicenna). - Abu 'Ali al-Husayn Ibn Sina (also known by his Latinized name Avicenna, 980-1037) was one of the most prominent intellectuals of the medieval period and of the Islamic Golden Age. He was a Persian polymath; he wrote works on an incredible wide variety of subjects, including philosophy, medicine, astronomy, geography, psychology, Islamic theology, physics, and even poetry. Ibn Sina is mainly known for his medical encyclopaedia The Canon of Medicine, which became a standard medical text for medical students until the late 17th century. - The present work was printed by one of the most successful and important late 15th and early 16th century Italian publishers, Lucantonio Giunta (1457-1538). He was originally from Florence, but was active in Venice from 1489. He was a member of the Giunta family of printers, publishers and booksellers, who were active throughout Europe. - With owner's inscriptions on the front and back paste-downs and on the title-page, and some marginal annotations in brown ink. The paste-downs are partially covered by the newer, slightly foxed, end leaves. The binding is somewhat stained, light water staining to the first half of the work, small restored tears in the outer margin of leaves d1 and d2 without affecting the text. Otherwise in good condition. Durling 397. Edit 16, CNCE 3543. USTC 811590.

IBRAHIM MUTEFERRIKA, (The founder of the first printing house in the Islamic world), (1674-1745).
["DECLARATION OF THE OTTOMAN EUROPEANIZATION": THE 9TH ISLAMIC INCUNABULA] Usûlü'l-hikem fî nizâmi'l-ümem. [i.e. The origins of thought and the order of the nations].
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Contemporary quarter dark burgundy leather bdg. Grey cloth boards. Four compartments at spine. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 96 p. [48 leaves]. 19 lines on each page. Printed on paper with European watermarks. A small tear up to the last page with no loss of text. Overall a fine copy. The 9th incunable of the Islamic world, written by Ibrahim Müteferrika and printed in his legendary Basmahane. Known as the most significant work by Müteferrika, this incunable is a political and state-theoretical treatise composed in order to improve the Ottoman government. In his book, Ibrahim Müteferrika used the sources written in Latin in the Europe of his period, and he presented it to Sultan Mahmud I right after the Patrona Halil Revolt (1730). Müteferrika divided the state forms of government in Europe into three groups with the titles "monarkiya" [i.e. monarchy], "aristokrasiya" [i.e. aristocracy], and "demokrasiya] [i.e. democracy]. In the work, the importance of the sciences (physics, astronomy, and geography) in the state administration was emphasized, and it was stated that a solid-state order could not be established in a country where these sciences were not developed. In addition to this, he used the term "Nizâm-i Cedîd" [i.e. The New Order] for the first time and stated that the Ottoman Empire should definitely adopt and implement the new military orders of the 18th century Europe. In addition, this work is one of the earliest in which the "democracy" term is used in the Islamic world. The book was published in French in Vienna and Paris in 1769 (Traite de la tactique ou méthode artificielle pour l'ordonnance des troupes, Vienne, 1769. Translated by Karl Emerich Alexander von Reviczky von Revisnye [Baron Reviczki]), and was translated from French into Russian in 1777. One of only 500 copies. The volume appeared in 1732, about one and a half years after the uprising of Patrona Halil Revolt which had overthrown the system of Sultan Ahmed III and Grand Vizier Damad Ibrahim. The writing, recalling the characteristics of Ottoman siyâsetnâme [i.e. the book of politics], calls the attention of the Ottoman leaders to the results of the state and military development and to the reasons for the strategic superiority of the rival European powers, while strongly condemning the several centuries long disinterest of the Ottomans to the external world. An important feature of the work is to break with the hitherto prevailing nostalgic attitude to bygone golden ages. Although observes the stylistic conventions in as much he speaks contemptuously about the Christian nations, in the content, already turns away from the indifference referring to the superiority of Islam. It announces in a list organized by items the reasons for the state's weakness and the conditions of rising. In harmony with the main aspects of contemporary Ottoman reforms, the work mainly focuses on the necessity of the reorganization of the army. It also offers a broader historical background by describing after the Greek philosophers the various types of states (6v-7v), or by treating the origins and reasons for the success of the foundations of European culture, the Roman Empire (19v-20v). The concept "Nizâm-I Cedîd" (i.e. the New Order), which would be used for the newly organized military formations of Sultan Selîm III (1789-1807), appears here for the first time referring to the modernized European army (17v-18r). "The utopistic optimism of Risâle-i Islâmîye may have had some rational basis, if one takes into account the Karlovci Treaty (1699) which was a rather positive correction in contrast to the previous series of Turkish failures in the Balkans, the European 'internal wars' of the first decade of the 18th century, and the experiences of the reform and peace years of the Tulip Period. However, the Usûl ül-hikem. was already inspired by the atmosphere after the Pozarevac Treaty (1718) which was a further stro
