Maffei, Raffaelo.
Commentariorum urbanorum Raphaelis Volaterani, octo & triginta libri [...]. Item Oeconomicus Xenophontis [...]. Basel, Hieronymus Froben & Nicolaus Episcopius, 1544.
Folio (240 x 349 mm). (21) ff., 1 blank f., 468 ff., With woodcut printer's device to title-page (repeated on verso of final leaf) and several optical and geometrical sketches, tables, etc. Contemporary blindstamped full calf over wooden boards. Traces of clasps. Second Basel edition of this important geographico-historical compendium, published by the famed humanist printers Froben and Episcopius, who had previously printed the work in 1530. - The Italian Humanist Raffael Maffei (1451-1522) served as "scriptor apostolicus" to the court of Pope Paul II but also studied theology and philosophy with the Greek scholar George of Trebizond (1395-1484). Only later did he relocate to Volterra, where he created his most famous works. First published in Rome in 1506, his "Commentaria" offer a veritable encyclopedia of Renaissance knowledge: of the 38 "books", the first twelve treat of geography, the next eleven of famous men in history, with the remainder discussing modern science and scholarship, especially language and philology. Within this framework Maffei touches upon subjects so diverse as plants and animals, metals, gems, architecture, mathematics, geometry, optics, astronomy and astrology, grammar, rhetorics, and the fine arts. Specifically, he mentions the voyages of Christopher Columbus (ff. 139f.) and the geography of Muslim Arabia (f. 131) as well as the discoveries of the Portuguese and Spanish seafarers. The massive work served Conrad Gesner as a source for his "Bibliotheca universalis". The present edition contains a detailed index and includes, at the end, the author's translation of Xenophon's dialogue "Oikonomikos". - Binding a little scuffed with professional repairs, also to spine. An old ownership erased from the title-page; a small wormhole to the blank margin of the final four leaves. A good copy. VD 16, M 115. Adams M 103. Sabin 43768. Harrisse (BAV) 257 & Add. 146. Alden/Landis 544/13.

Maior, Johann.
Numerierung "12". Papierbedingt gleichmäßig gebräunt; gutes Exemplar. VD 16, M 305/306.

Maldonado, Juan de, SJ.
Commentarii in quattuor evangelistas. Nunc primum in lucem editi, et in duos tomos divisi. Venedig, Giambattista & Giovanni Bernardo Sessa, 1597.
2 Bde. in einem. (8) SS., 918 Spp., (17) SS. Innen etwas gebräunt; vereinzelt Wurmspuren in w. Rand. Am Titelblatt hs. Besitzvermerk "Hier[oni]mi Michaelii" (17. Jh.). Zu Sessas bekannter Druckermarke (eine Katze mit Maus im Maul) bemerkte der berühmte bibliophile Bischof von Ely, John Moore: "Whenever you see a book with a cat and a mouse in the frontispiece, seize upon it: for the chances are three to four that it will be found both curious and valuable" (zit. n. Fumagalli, 486). Edit 16, CNCE 29622. De Backer/Sommervogel V, 404. Nicht bei Adams oder BM-STC Italian.

Manilius, M[arcus].
Astronomicon. A Iosepho Scaligero ex vetusto codice Gemblacensi infinitis mendis repurgatum. Leiden, ex Officina Plantiniana, apud Christophorum Raphelengium (für Johann Commelin [in Heidelberg]), 1600.
Small 4to (142 x 188 mm). 2 parts in one volume. (32), 131, (5) pp. (20), 510, (2) pp. With two identical printer's devices and several woodcut diagrams in the text. 19th century red morocco with giltstamped fillets to spine and covers. Gilt inner dentelle. All edges gilt. Third edition of Scaliger's famous recension of this instructional poem on astronomy written in the first century. "[Scaliger's] penetrating scholarship and powerful gift of analysis were magisterially demonstrated in his edition of one of the most difficult of Latin texts, the 'Astronomica' of Manilius, and this was a forerunner to his greatest work [namely 'De emendatione temporum']" (PMM, p. 59f.). The commentary (pp. 473-510, with letterpress Arabic) contains one of the earliest European studies of Arabic star names ("De quarundam stellarum arabicis appellationibus"). This edition was first published by Estienne in 1579; the first part of the present edition had already appeared in the previous year (cf. Adams M 364, Graesse IV, 364 & Houzeau/L. 1037). - Binding professionally repaired at extremeties. Rebound in the 19th century, trimming the edges fairly closely, touching some of the diagrams. Modern endpapers. Occasional light brownstaining; insignificant waterstain to gutter of first few leaves and outer margins. A few early annotations in brown ink. Title has stamp of St Hugh's Charterhouse, Parkminster (West Sussex). Adams M 365. Caillet 7076. Ebert 12943. Houzeau/Lancaster 1037. Riccardi I2, 93, 12. Schweiger II.2, 590 (with erroneous collation). Cf. Wolf 189b; Zinner 3387 (1590 ed.). PMM 98 (note).

Manlio, Giovanni Giacomo (Johannes Jacobus Manlius or Manliis), Quirico de Augustis and Paulus de Suardis.
Luminare maius quondam elaboratissimis, Joannis Jacobi Manlii Alexandrini, commentario, & Nicolai Mutoni Mediolanensis appendicibus, locuples nunc vero etiam luculentissima; Jani Matthaei Durastantis Sanctoiustani expositione locupletius adeo redditum; Connexa praeterea sunt, tam Lumen apothecariorum, quam Thesaurus aromatariorum, cum dilucidissimis, illud Quirici Augusti, hic Pauli Suardi; commentariolis. His demum accessere et copiosissimi quatuor indices, primus ac secundus, in Luminare, tertius in Lumen, ultimus in Thesaurum [...]. Venice, Lucantonio Giunta, 1566.
Folio. (36), 172, (10), 173-213, (1 blank) ff. Only preserving the front board in contemporary sheepskin parchment. First edition to be edited by Durastante, with commentary by Nicolai Mutoni, of three important late 15th-century treatises on pharmacology and medical botany. The first work, Luminare maius by Giovanni Giacomo Manlio di Bosco (fl. 1490-post 1500), is a commentary on ancient Arabic and Greek pharmacological works, especially the Arabic treatises of Yuhanna Ibn Masawayh known in the West as Mesue the elder (ca. 777-857). It gives instructions for preparing numerous medicines, indicating the quantities of the ingredients and describing each ingredient. The second work, Lumen apothecariorum by Quirico de Augustis de Tortona of Milan (fl. 1486-97), complements it with descriptions of hundreds of medicinal preparations, including many oils and syrups. The third work, Thesaurus aromatariorum by Paulus de Suardis (fl. 1479-81), gives recipes for about 500 aromatic medicines, oils, syrups, etc. The three together formed what was probably the most extensive pharmacological encyclopaedia of its day. - Title-page slightly browned, with some wormholing, a few leaves with some minor water stains, the last quire nearly detached and only preserving the front board, but most of the text still good. Durling 2943. ICCU 005328. USTC 840129.

Manuel, Blaise Etienne and FranÁois Dufart (Jacques-Eustache Deseve et al., illustrators)
Nouveau museum d'histoire naturelle; ou representation fidelle des etres les plus remarquables compris dans les trois regnes de la nature en figures coloriees sur planche.... Tome premier. Regne animal.--Classe des quadrupedes vivipares ou mammifer
ALL PUBLISHED of this abortive yet spectacular attempt at a comprehensive survey of natural history, THE FIRST BOOK ON ZOOLOGY WITH COLOR-PRINTED (as opposed to hand-colored) PLATES. Comprises a general preface describing the entire project (by Dufart), an introduction to this volume (by Manuel), 101 GORGEOUS FULL-PAGE COLOR-PRINTED STIPPLE-ENGRAVED PLATES OF MAMMALS IN EXOTIC LANDSCAPES (usually two scenes per plate, after Deseve and other artists), and descriptive notes on each mammal depicted (by Manuel). 30 pp., 101 plates, 60 pp. Dedicated to Napoleon. Text printed on fine wove paper, plates on very fine, thick wove paper. After the appearance of this volume, the project was suspended because the publishers could not find enough subscribers (there is a list of the 24 who subscribed to this first volume on the back of the half-title). The reasons for this failure are obvious: each volume cost a staggering 60 francs (not including the binding) and the images of the animals, although bright, beautiful, and charming, are not particularly accurate. Large thick 8vo. BOUND IN CONTEMPORARY FULL CRIMSON MOROCCO, WITH ELEGANT GILT DECORATION ON COVERS AND SPINE. All edges gilt. Light wear to extremities of binding, but still very attractive. Internally bright. Two copies in NUC. QuÈrard (La France littÈraire, V, 497) doubts the very existence of this work: "...ne paraÓt avoir ÈtÈ que projetÈ, car on n'en trouve mention nulle autre part que dans le vol. de M. Debray." An extremely rare, unusual, and altogether stunning book.
