Nathan ben Kalonymos, Itzhak.
[Meir Nativ.] Concordantias hebraicas [she-hiber he-hacham ha-muvhak Rabi Mordechai Natan]. Venice, Alvise Bragadini, 1564.
Folio. (416) ff. Hebrew type, 4 cols. With woodcut printer's device on title page. 17th century calf with gilt spine and cover rules; gilt Jesuit device to cover. Edges tinted yellow. Rare second Venetian edition of the first Hebrew Bible concordance (first published by Bomberg in 1523), with a new Latin dedication to Maggio Parentini. Words are arranged etymologically by roots and stems; the order of the books follows that of the Vulgate. The Arles-born Rabbi Isaac Nathan ben Kalonimus (fl. 1400-48) compiled the work commonly referred to as "Meir Nativ" ("Light of the Way") between 1437 and 1447 with the twofold aim to facilitate the study of Biblical exegesis and to keep Jews who had converted to Christianity from misquoting the Bible in religious controversies (cf. Jewish Encyclopaedia). Nathan himself moved in Christian scholarly circles and participated in theological disputations with his Christian colleagues. Notably, he based his present concordance on a work compiled by the Franciscan Arlotto de Prato. Occasionally (as here) the book is falsely attributed to Isaac's nephew Mordechai Nathan. - Text ruled in red throughout; the edges' yellow paint has seeped into the margins in places. Title page somewhat brownstained; a few corner defects early on, otherwise very clean and largely unbrowned. Ms. ownership of the Jesuit college at Chambéry (Savoy), dated 1585, on title (and repeated on last leaf but one); old stamp and long bibliographical note in French (c. 1900). Binding somewhat rubbed; spine professionally repaired. No copy in U.S. libraries. Adams B 1953. BM-STC Italian 104. Steinschneider 5399.3. Fürst III, 22. OCLC 257608293. Not in Edit 16.

NEVILLE CARDUS - First Printing
Ten Composers
Jonathan Cape London 1945 The perfect guide to ten composers from Schubert to Sibelius. This is written with all the fine charm of a great reporter in love with his subject. A neat War Economy production and first printing. The jacket is unclipped and not seriously damaged and it is now protected. The classification 'Near Fine' takes into account the age of the book. It is without any names or inscriptions and it has benefited from the jacket protecting the binding and the gilt titling. This is an uncommon book to find in such a complete collectable state. Anyone who enjoys good solid enthusiastic writing with just the right balance of scholarship and readability will enjoy this superb book. New York Public Library [Joshua Bloch]
HEBREW PRINTING IN NAPLES [IN] BULLETIN OF THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY, ASTOR, LENOX AND TILDEN FOUNDATIONS VOL. 46. NO. 6 JUNE 1942
Original illustrated paper wrappers. 4to. Pages 471-536; 26 cm. Divided into multiple sections. Hebrew Printing in Naples is by leading Jewish bibliographer, and head of the NYPL Jewish Division, Joshua Bloch. Also includes, Pennsylvania Dutch Folk Art and Architecture, and Kingston to Newson to Blake. Includes facsimile of a beautiful Hebrew book from Naples. The Jews in Italy, Spain and Portugal were the first to make use of the newly-invented art of Gutenberg for the production of Hebrew books. Hebrew printing presses were set up in various parts of those countries, and produced virtually all known Hebrew books printed during the fifteenth century. Naples, the largest and most beautiful city of Lower Italy, became an early and quite important center of Hebrew printing, second only to Soncino, even as it had become a large center of Jewish life. Though of short duration, the Neapolitan was perhaps the most cosmopolitan Jewish community in the fifteenth century. With the exception of Soncino, none of the cities in Spain, Portugal or Italy can claim the production of as many Hebrew incunabula as were printed in Naples in less than a decade. The periodical was published monthly from 1897-1977. SUBJECT (S) : Bibliography, Periodicals. OCLC lists 22 holdings worldwide. Toning to pages. Minimal staining and rubbing. Very dusty. Very good condition. (AMR-53-13)

Newsome, David - FIRST PRINTING
Victorian World Picture
John Murray London 1997 Unread looking book and in a fine protected jacket. This review says it all: "David Newsome's masterly survey based primarily on the perceptions and reactions of contemporary observers cleverly combines a thematic with a chronological approach emphasizing the sense of precariousness which was rarely absent throughout the Queen's long reign: anxieties in the opening decades over alarming growth of population the impact of industrialization and the acceleration in the pace of life thanks to the new railways. Utilitarians social reformers religious spokesmen novelists and sages offered conflicting solutions amidst fears of mob violence which might erupt into revolution. Nicander of Colophon.
Theriaca. Paris, Morelius, 1557.
4to. (8), "225" [= 215], (1 blank); "80" [= 72] pp. Including: Nicander of Colophon. Alexipharmaca. In Nicander Theriaca scholia auctoris incerti, et vetusta et utilia. In eiusdem Alexipharmaca diversorum auctorum scholia. 3 parts in 1 volume. Each part with its own title-page, with a woodcut caduceus device on all three. Set in roman and Greek types. 17th-century(?) richly gold-tooled red morocco, gilt edges; subtly rebacked, with the original backstrip laid down. Bilingual edition (Greek & Latin) of two medical hexametric poems by the Hellenistic poet and physician Nicander of Colophon (fl. second century BC), followed by a part with ancient scholia in Greek. The two poems are followed by comments by its translator, the Parisian pharmacist Jean de Gorris (1505-1577). They were first published separately in 1549 and 1556 and here for the first time published together. Nicander wrote at least 20 works, but "only his Theriaca (958 hexameters on poisonous creatures and on antidotes for their bites and stings) and Alexipharmaca (630 hexameters on antidotes to poisons) are extant". - "Nicander's influence on later Greek and Latin literature was considerable. Not only did Virgil, Ovid, and Antoninus Liberalis draw on his works, but Lucan, Pliny the Elder, Erotian, Aelian, and Athenaeus of Naucratis also benefited from direct or indirect familiarity with Nicander. In the 1st century BC the enormously learned scholar Didymus ("Chalcenterus") appears to have made extensive use of Nicander's lexicographic contributions. Although Dioscorides only twice cites Nicander's views in his Materia Medica, Galen in his pharmacological works quotes a number of verse passages from Nicander. Papyrus fragments from the 1st to 3rd centuries AD further confirm Nicander's popularity in the Roman empire" (Von Staden). - With the bookplate of the British politician John Thynne, Baron Carteret of Hawnes, dated 1841. Washed, with some faint early manuscript notes. Durling notes that, like in our copy, a general title-page is lacking in their copy, but this appears to be as usual. Internally in very good condition. Rebacked, lower hinge weakened, front hinge professionally repaired. Durling 3341. USTC 160585. Wellcome I, 4530. Cf. H. Von Staden, "Nicander" in N. Wilson, Encyclopedia of ancient Greece (2006).
