Sibutus, Georg Daripinus.
Ars memorativa Gerogii [!] Sibuti daripini co[n]cionatorib[us] et iurisperitis multum utilis et fructuosa. Carmen eiusdem in vita[m] sanctae Annae Heroicu[m]. Sphico annexum. Saphicum Ioannis Murmellii. Saphicum Ioanuis [!] cesarii. Cologne, [heirs of Heinrich] Quentel, 7 Aug. 1506.
16 pp. With an ornamental woodcut initial on the title page. Papered spine. Second edition of Sibutus's first published work, previously printed by Quentel in March 1505: a treatise on the art of memory. The humanist Sibutus (c. 1480-1528), probably from Tannroda in Thuringia, was a student of Conrad Celtis. Crowned poet laureate by Emperor Maximilian, he practised as a physician and taught rhetorics in Wittenberg, Rostock, Cologne, and Vienna. "This frequently cited and rarely discussed instruction by Sibutus contains within the space of 7½ pages so many obscure precepts, counter-productively mingled with verses by Virgil, Ovid, and others, that it must be quite incomprehensible to anyone unaccustomed with mnemonics. It is apparent that Sibutus employed a very difficult and roundabout method. So as to have no more than 36 mnemonic devices, he used the verse 'arma virumque cano' etc.; for each letter he would imagine a person whose name began with that letter etc. He does not explain how to avoid confusing these persons in case a particular letter occurs more than once" (cf. Aretin, Systematische Anleitung zur Theorie und Praxis der Mnemonik, Sulzbach 1810, p. 194ff.). More of a practitioner than a theorist, Sibutus was proficient in mnemotechnics himself: for Frederick, Elector of Saxony, he recited from memory 600 verses of his "Silvula in Albiorim", a poem praise of Wittenberg. The present volume includes two introductory poems by Johannes Murmellius and Johannes Cesarius, a dedicatory poem to the Lübeck jurist Heinrich Bucholt, as well as Sibutus's own "Carmen in vitam S. Annae". - Slight brownstaining throughout; insignificant waterstain to upper gutter. A single copy in the U.S. according to OCLC (Harvard Med. School). VD 16, S 6262. BM-STC German 812. Panzer VI, p. 358, no. 104. Verfasserlex. II.3, col. 892. OCLC 230985978. Not in Adams.

Sidney, Sir Philip.
ASTROPHEL & STELLA. Edited by Mona Wilson.
pp. xxxviii, 193. Printed on Van Gelder paper. Deckle edges. 8vo. Original stiff boards with flower dust wraps. Original solander case, nicked at front. Original floral slip case. Limited Edition printed by The Kynoch Press. Number 582 of which 725 copies are for sale in England and 485 for sale in the United States by Random House. First printed in 1591, Astrophel and Stella is an English sonnet sequence containing 108 sonnets and 11 songs. The name derives from the two Greek words, 'aster' (star) and 'phil' (lover), and the Latin word 'stella' meaning star. Thus Astrophel is the star lover, and Stella is his star. Some have suggested that the love represented may be a literal one as Sidney evidently connects Astrophel to himself and Stella to Penelope Rich, the wife of a courtier, Robert Rich, 3rd Baronet. Payne. A very nice example. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! PRESS/W43

Engraved vignette on title signed by Hoppe & two engraved vignettes by Christian Gottlieb Geyser serving as head- & tail-pieces to the poem. Four leaves printed on pale yellow-white silk. 4to 257 x 205 mm. cont. pale pink silk over boards a bit soiled black floral design round sides pale blue silk paste-down endpapers. Leipzig: "Gedrukt bey Wilhelm Gottlob Sommer" 1793. Apparently unique this poem pays homage to the duchess Sophie Wilhelmine von Schönaich-Carolath 1764-95 for her visit to the small village of Rochsburg in Saxony. She was a member of the family which owned the famous Schloss Rochsburg situated above the village. It is remarkable that this small village was able to plan and have printed this quite luxurious and attractive work. The front paste-down has a mounted piece of paper with the contemporary inscription "Dies Buch gehört Sophie Wilhelmine Gräfin von Schönburg Rochsburg gebohrne Prinzess von Carolath Schönaich Rochsburg den 5 September 1793." Three contemporary silhouette portraits of the duchess loosely laid-in. In fine condition. Not in WorldCat. hardcover books

Silvaticus, Matthaeus.
Opus pandectarum Matthei Silvatici cum quotationibus auctoritatum Ply. Gal. et aliorum in locis suis: necnon cum Simone Januense: ac Tabula. Venice, Simone da Lovere, 12 Jan. 1511.
Folio (217 x 298 mm). 198 ff. With one woodcut initial. Late 19th c. boards. Edges sprinkled in red. Fine post-incunabular printing of this important medical compendium and pharmacopoeia, replete with Arabic-derived terminology, strongly based on Avicenna, Serapion the Younger (Ibn Wafid), and Dioscorides. Matthaeus Silvaticus, active around 1300, "was one of the most important mediaeval botanists and pharmacologists. His magnificent compilation from works of earlier physicians, with occasional observations and opinions of his own, presents its subjects in alphabetical order, making this effectively a kind of dictionary. The book's principal value lies in the explanations of various specialist terms from all fields of medicine, in particular several of Arabic origin" (cf. Hirsch/Hübotter IV, 117). - Occasional light browning. Annotated throughout in red ink by a contemporary physician's hand. A good copy despite the unsophisticated modern binding. Edit 16, CNCE 69665. Durling 4206. Panzer VIII, 404, 543. Proctor/Isaac 12960. Wellcome I, 5972. Not in Adams, Bird, Lesky, Osler, or Waller.

Sorbin, Arnaud.
Oraison Funebre de Treshaulte et Vertueuse Princesse Marie Isabeau de France, Fille de Tres-hault & Treschrestien Roy Charles. ix. amateur de toute Vertu, & Protecteur de la Foy. Pronõ[n]cee en l’Eglise Nostre-dame en Paris, le 11 d’Avril 1578. Paris, Guillaume Chaudiere, 1578.
Small 4to (160 x 105 mm). 19 ff., plus 1 integral blank, signed A-E4. Woodcut printer’s device on title-page. Bound in late 19th century marbled boards with gilt title label on spine. Slightly foxed; a few traces of humidity to upper corners, otherwise good. Very rare first edition of this funerary oration and poetic tribute to Marie-Élisabeth, Princess of France, who died aged 5 of unknown causes on 2 April 1578. Although barred by Salic law from inheriting the throne in her own right, as the only child of Charles IX and Elisabeth of Austria, she embodied a formidable consanguinity among European noble houses. Her maternal grandparents were Maximilian II, Holy Roman Emperor and Maria of Spain, and her paternal grandparents were Henry II of France and Catherine de' Medici. Rounding off this Valois, Habsburg, and Medici parentage, her godmother was none other than the Protestant Elizabeth I of England. - When Marie-Élisabeth was just two years old, her father died; her mother returned to the Habsburg court in Vienna shortly thereafter, leaving her mainly in the care of her aunt, Marguerite de Valois, wife of the new king Henry IV. Sorbin thus dedicates the present work in four pages to Marguerite, before choosing as his Biblical starting point Lamentations II, 13. He naturally praises the princess’ illustrious ancestors and gives examples of historical parallels to her untimely death; following this is a 4 page poem ‘Tombeau de Madame Marie Isabeau de France…” which prays for the soul of the dead girl while simultaneously demanding an end to France’s civil strife. - OCLC shows just 1 US copy, at the Newberry; COPAC shows no copies in UK libraries. Pettegree, French Vernacular Books 48338 (erroneously suggesting an earlier edition of 1577 as 48333); on the preface to Marguerite de Valois, cf Vons, Jacqueline, “Dédicace de l’Oraison funèbre et Tombeau de Marie-Élisabeth de France (1572-1578)”.
