Peter Redgrove - SIGNED RARE FIRST PRINTING
The Force and Other Poems
London: Routledge and Kegan Paul 1966 1966 Cloth. Fine/Very Good. First Edition First Impression. Signed by Author. Rare first edition hardback even scarcer as a signed copy. The author's fourth collection. Great work here including the poem - 'The Sermon' - which was commissioned by the BBC for its ground breaking Arts Programme 'Monitor' most fondly remembered. Especially when you compare it with most of the tv arts coverage now. Goodness that makes me sound an old grump but it's true. Anyway this is good stuff from a damn good poet and the book is in clean and tight condition. Jacket is a bit grumpy too but it has no tears or creases and is now protected. Very collectable indeed and genuinely a rare book to find in this signed state. 0.0 0.0 0.0. Signed by Author. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good. London: Routledge and Kegan Paul, 1966 hardcover

Pfefferkorn, Johann.
Libellus de Judaica confessione sive sabbato afflictionis. (Nuremberg, Johann Weißenburger, [150]8).
4to. (20) pp. With a title woodcut and 4 woodcuts in the text (repeating the title cut). Later quarter vellum over marbled boards. The rarer of two Latin editions of the "Judenbeichte", both published in 1508, after the "Judenspiegel" the second treatise by the fanatical convert Johann Pfefferkorn (1469-1522/23), in which he discusses his former brothers in the Jewish faith and their celebrations, asserting that the Jews were more corrupting than the devil himself and petitioning the Christian authorities to force all Jews to convert or emigrate. The woodcut illustrations in Pfefferkorn's work are the earliest prints depicting Jewish customs and ceremonies. They include a Kapparot scene, ritual bath, matzo preparation, jumbled together with imaginary representations of Jews telling their sins to crows and a Tashlich service during Rosh Hashanah when sins are cast into water. - Pfefferkorn was a German Catholic theologian and writer. Born Jewish, possibly in Nuremberg, he moved to Cologne after many years of wandering. After committing a burglary, he was imprisoned and released in 1504. He converted and was baptized together with his family. Pfefferkorn became an assistant to the prior of the Dominicans at Cologne, Jacob van Hoogstraaten, and under their auspices published several libellous pamphlets in which he tried to demonstrate that Jewish religious writings were hostile to Christianity, and argued for the destruction of all copies of the Talmud. As late as 1509, Emperor Maximilian empowered Pfefferkorn to confiscate all Hebrew writings in Jewish hands and destroy any he found dangerous. After wide-scale protests, the humanist scholar Johannes Reuchlin was commissioned to give an expert opinion on Jewish writings, which led to a long-running battle of pamphlets between Reuchlin and Pfefferkorn, who was defended by the Dominicans. - A single red pencil annotation to the colophon, otherwise entirely unmarked. VD 16, P 2311. Panzer VII, 447, 53. Goedeke I, 452. Freimann 263. BNHCat P 429. Cf. Graesse V, 248. Fürst III, 82. Not in Adams or BM-STC German (only the Cologne edition).

Philes, George P. (Andrew J. Odell)
Bibliotheca Curiosa: Catalogue of the Library of Andrew J. Odell
AN IMPORTANT EXAMPLE OF AMERICAN COLOR PRINTING. Two volumes, complete. A remarkable catalogue of a remarkable collection. Odell focused on bibliography, books about books, history of printing and the graphic arts, and fine printing, at a time when few American collectors were interested in these areas. Books in these categories account for well over half of the 2,434 lots. There is also a wide selection of extremely rare books in other areas, especially the occult, including incunables and a few highly important medieval manuscripts. The catalogue itself is notable for two reasons. First, there are the precise, knowledgeable, and extensive descriptions, with numerous references to specialized bibliographies: most American book catalogues of this period give the barest information about the items at hand. Second, this is certainly the most lavishly-produced American book auction catalogue of the 19th century. It was beautifully printed on fine laid paper, with numerous engraved initials, headpieces, and tailpieces. VOLUME I OF THE PRESENT SET IS FROM THE DELUXE ISSUE, ONE OF VERY FEW COPIES PRINTED PRIMARILY FOR PRIVATE CIRCULATION, with the initials, headpieces, and tailpieces printed in different colors. The sets of this deluxe issue that reached the market were sold for $10 each, a colossal price when we consider that lot 1462, a copy of Bodoni's 1818 Manuale Tipografico, sold for $4.50! Volume II is from the regular issue, and is NEATLY PRICED THROUGHOUT in a contemporary hand. Title-pages printed in red and black. Facsimiles. 4to. Volume I is ABSOLUTELY PRISTINE, uncut, unopened, unsewn, unstabbed, and unglued, loosely laid into original wraps (light soiling to wraps). Volume II in bound in half leather and marbled boards, with original wraps bound in (binding somewhat worn at extremities). Both volumes internally FINE, AND BRIGHT. Complete sets are extremely rare (volume II is especially scarce). Not in Bigmore & Wyman or Taylor.

Both on letterheads of The Houghton Library Harvard University Cambridge Massachusetts. Autograph letter dated 19 October 1966. Typed note dated 28 November 1966. See Hofer's obituary in the New York Times 12 October 1984 in which it is stated that 'Mr. Hofer who was secretary of the Fogg Museum at Harvard for 12 years was a recognized book collector focusing on 18th-century German Iberian and Italian publications. Mr. Hofer put together an Italian book collection considered the finest outside Italy. Konrad Oberhuber professor of fine arts at Harvard said of Mr. Hofer: ''He was one of the most farsighted collectors that Harvard ever had. .â€'. Two airmail letters both in good condition. Both addressed to Harrison at 15 Bryanston Square London. Each 1p. 8vo. ONE. ALS. 19 October 1966. He has been informed by David Markham that Harrison has 'a fairly substantial number of them' and asks to know 'how many'. He explains that he is 'not dealing with oil paintings except casually but with watercolors ink and pencil sketches'. He concludes with an appeal for information about 'any other considerable collectors of Lear of your acquaintance'. TWO: TNS. 28 November 1966. He thanks him for 'the information concerning the nineteen Lear drawings' in Harrison's collection. Pighius, Albertus.
Adversus novam Marci Beneventani astronomiam, quae positionem Alphonsinam, ac recentiorum omnium, de motu octavi orbis multis modis depravavit, & secum pugnantem fecit: Alberti Pighii Campensis apologia [...]. Paris, Simon Colinaeus, (3 May) 1522.
4to (140 x 196 mm). (6), 70 ff. With 35 woodcut diagrams in the text. Modern half vellum over marbled boards. First edition, rare (the earlier editions cited by Houzeau/L. are ghosts). Albert Pighius was born at Kampen in Holland ca. 1490 and died at Utrecht in 1542. Primarily a mathematician, he spent much time at the University of Paris, where this book was written. In this treatise, one of his polemical attacks against those who put the sciences of astronomy and astrology to base uses and employ them merely for the making of idle prognostications and popular almanacks, he praises Peurbach and Regiomontanus as true scientists, denouncing as a fraud the "Nova Astronomia" of Marcus Beneventanus. - Light waterstain to top edge of title-page; upper edge trimmed fairly closely throughout. A few ink annotations in a roughly contemporary hand. An excellent copy. Adams P 1179. Houzeau/Lancaster 2373f. Lalande 43. Renouard (Colines), p. 40f. Renouard, ICP, III, 386. Poggendorff II, 450. OCLC 33631427. Not in BM-STC French, Mortimer, or Caillet.
