Ptolemaeus, Claudius.
La geografia di Claudio Tolomeo Alessandrino, nuovamente tradotta di Greco in Italiano, da Girolamo Ruscelli, con espositioni del medesimo [...]. Venice, Vincenzo Valgrisi, 1561.
4to. 3 parts in one vol. (8), 358, (2), (56) pp. (= 28 double-page maps of the ancient world); (56), (72) pp. (= 36 double-page maps of the modern world); 47, (49) pp. A total of 64 double-page engraved maps. Contemporary limp vellum with hand-lettered blue spine label; wants ties. First edition of Girolamo Ruscelli's Italian translation of Ptolemy's "Geography": "a new and important edition in Italian, with a new series of maps" (Stevens). Apart from the 27 traditional Ptolemaic maps, this edition boasts 37 new ones, including three maps of the world, showing the earth according to the description of Ptolemy ("tutta la terra conosciuta fin' à tempi di Tolomeo") and as it was viewed after the discovery of America ("Tavola universal nuova", in two hemispheres - "the first time that such a representation had been used in an atlas", Shirley 110), with a separate navigation map ("carta marina nuova tavola"). Among the "new" maps, the most remarkable ones are those of India, South-East Asia and of America, offering some of the earliest depictions of the newly-discovered continent; other maps include Arabia, Asia Minor, Greece, Italy, Germany, France, Spain, and North and South Africa. Ten of the old Ptolemaic series show Europe, four show Africa, and twelve Asia. Most of the maps are based on the Gastaldi maps from the 1548 Venice edition made by Giulio and Livio Sanuto, but maps not found there include Scandinavia (after Jacob Ziegler, 1532); Brasil (after Ramusio); the Arctic regions; South Africa; and the navigational chart of the World (Shirley 111). - Title-page a little stained and remargined in the lower corner. A few insignificant lower edge flaws to the first quires. Printed on strong paper, all maps in stark, excellent impressions. A fine copy in its first binding. Edit 16, CNCE 38126. BM-STC Italian 543. Adams P 2235. Shirley 110f. Alden/Landis 561/42. Burden 29-31. Norderskiöld Collection 2:216. Stevens p. 50. Phillips (Atlases) 371. Le Gear 5915. Sabin 66503.

PUBLISHING - The London Printing and Publishing Company (Limited).
Pair of publisher's blads.
London: The London Printing and Publishing Company Limited. c.1859-61. Doorstepping the Indian Rebellion A fascinating and notable piece of 19th-century publishing history: a pair of publisher's blads in this case used by a salesman in the garnering of subscriptions for two very popular and topical part-works Robert Montgomery Martin's The Indian Empire 1858-59 and Charles Ball's The Indian Mutiny 1858-61; each gilt stamped on the front cover "Specimen. Not for Sale" and carrying at the end a number of pages for recording subscribers' details. The blad for The Indian Mutiny shows that our salesman was on the East Midlands circuit with the names of two individuals recorded in Radford and Nottingham: a Thomas Brown and a Joseph Houlton baker of Derby Road Nottingham the latter recorded in directories of the period. A blad is a sample book section used by publishers and their representatives for promotional purposes. These are particularly handsome examples presented in their now slightly faded but nonetheless impressive cloth bindings that alone would have been a temptation to the potential book buyer offering a choice selection of plates and the opening six or eight pages of text. Needless to say their highly ephemeral nature makes them decidedly uncommon. Two works large octavo. Each with steel-engraved frontispiece and vignette title page first work with 11 plates second with 8 both with hand-coloured engraved map of India and specimen of letterpress. Martin: original saffron morocco-grain cloth blind ornamental foliate paneling to covers title within a pictorial cartouche gilt to front cover pale primrose yellow-coated endpapers; Ball: original red bead-grain cloth blind ornamental paneling to covers title within pictorial cartouche gilt incorporating a portrait of Sir Henry Havelock to front cover pale primrose yellow-coated endpapers Bindings a little rubbed and stained inner hinges cracked back cover of The Indian Mutiny loose and holding on front cords yet considering the nature of these pieces remarkably well preserved. hardcover

Pye, Henry James.
ALFRED; An Epic Poem in Six Books.
pp. (vi), 243. Large 4to. Worn early full leather binding. Signs of prtevious ownerships removed. Very clean and wide margined text. Printed by one of the great firms to work in England in the wake of Baskerville. FIRST EDITION. Henry James Pye (1745-1813), poetaster and poet laureate. He was educated at home until 1762, when he entered Magdalen College, Oxford, as a gentleman-commoner. From an early age Pye cultivated literary tastes, and his main object in life was to obtain recognition as a poet. In 1790 Pye was appointed poet laureate, in succession to Thomas Warton, and he held the office for twenty-three years. He doubtless owed his good fortune to the support he had given the prime minister, Pitt, while he sat in the House of Commons. Pye was the intimate friend of Governor John Penn (1729-1795). This work has been described as his magnum opus, and was dedicated to Addington. W139 ON HOLD

Quercu, Simon de.
Opusculum musices perquam brevissimum. Vienna, Johann Winterburger, 1509.
4to. 48 unnumbered pages. With the Guidonian hand woodcut in red and black, 4 woodcut initials, woodcut device at end, several xylographic tables and music examples. Modern white boards with title lettered on spine. Rare first edition, of which just a few copies survive: the author's presentation copy, a partly erased inscription at the end reading "Munus Autoris [...] An 11, 7 martii [...]". Quercu was choirmaster to Duke Ludovico Sforza of Milan and accompanied his two sons as a tutor to the court of Vienna. The present treatise, a famous and highly original book on musical theory for young scholars, was probably used in the musical education of the duke's sons. "The first part, 'Musica plana', deals with the modes, intervals, note names, solmization and solmization syllables, and mutation. The second part, 'Musica mensuralis', deals with note lengths, rests, ligatures, mensuration signs, alteration, imperfection and mensural proportions. The third part, 'Contrapunctus', considers consonances, dissonances and polyphonic writing. His teaching is illustrated with many music examples" (New Grove). The finely printed book includes on p. (4) the Guidonian hand, named after Guido of Arezzo (992?-1050), who introduced into music theory this mnemonic device to help teach singers learn to sight-read. Each portion of the hand represents a specific note in the hexachord system; during instruction, a teacher would indicate the series of notes by pointing to them on their hand to have the students sing them. - Light washing traces. Inscription recording "A gift from the author, 7 March [15]11", on the final page. German dealer’s catalogue clipping bound in before title. A monogram stamp on the lower pastedown identifies the collection of Otto Schäfer in Schweinfurt (purchased in 1958). No auction record for this edition (and only one for the second edition; cf. ABPC/RBH). USTC lists 5 copies only held in libraries including this copy. VD 16, Q 39. Denis p. 22. Panzer IX, p. 3, no. 13. New Grove XV, 504. MGG X, 1811. USTC 679907.

Quintilianus, Marcus Fabius.
[De institutione oratoria]. (Florence, Filippo I Giunta, October 1515).
Small 8vo (145 x 100 mm). (4), "269" (= 367), (1) ff. With a title-page containing only the author's name, but with the title in the heading to liber I, Giunti's woodcut device (a decorated fleur-de-lis, in this case on a platform and supported by 2 figures with cornucopias) on the verso of the otherwise blank final leaf, a roman capital used as a 2-line initial for the dedication, another as a 3-line initial for the preamble to the main text and a space (with a guide letter) left for a manuscript initial (mostly 6-line) opening each of the 12 libri, not filled in. Set entirely in an Aldine-style italic (with upright capitals).Vellum (ca. 1850?), sewn on 4 cords, with a hollow back, blind-tooled double fillets, gold-tooled red morocco spine label, headbands in blue and white, Stormont marbled endpapers (grey spots with brown and white veins). The first and only Giunta edition (one of the first in small format), in the original Latin, of the standard classical textbook on oratory and rhetoric by Quintilian (ca. 35-ca. 95/100 AD), in many respects the greatest orator between Cicero and Quintilian's own student Pliny the younger. It is refreshing today for its emphasis on the importance of the speaker's integrity, arguing that to speak well for a good cause requires character and morality. The Cicero-Quintilian-Pliny school was critical of orators they saw as promoting causes using clever tricks or florid language, or by appealing to the listener's worst qualities. They criticised Hortensius, Seneca and Regulus. Quintilian's Institutiones oratoriae, his only surviving work, also serves as one of our most important sources of information about education and culture in Roman antiquity. It not only teaches the theory and practice of rhetoric in speaking and writing, but also discusses the education and life-long development that an orator needs. Quintilian also advises the reader on the best authors on the subject, providing a critical examination of the history of rhetoric. - Quintilian was born in Córdoba in Andalusia, but his father sent him to Rome to study rhetoric early in the reign of Nero. He returned to Spain for a few years around 60-68 AD but returned to Rome as part of the retinue of the Emperor Galba, Nero's short-lived successor. After Galba's death, during the chaotic Year of the Four Emperors that followed, Quintilian opened a public school of rhetoric. He gave up teaching and presenting pleas in 88 AD and devoted himself to writing his Oratoria. - Though contemporaries recognized Quintilian's quality and influence, the modern world knew his work only from fragments and by reputation until Poggio found a complete manuscript of the Oratoria in 1416. It was first published at Rome in 1470 and Nicolas Jenson produced a better edition in 1471. Although more than a dozen editions appeared before 1515, most were folios or large quartos that only a limited audience could afford. The first small format edition, an octavo, appeared at Lyon in 1510, one of only two smaller than quarto before the present. The Lyon edition clearly owned much to the Aldine approach, setting the text in an Aldine-style italic, but Aldus himself produced no edition until his small quarto of 1514, a few months before his death. Nicolò Angeli dal Bucine edited the present edition, but Giunta clearly took Aldus's 1514 small quarto, edited by Andrea Navagero, as model for the text and layout (both are set entirely in a single size of italic type, a style Aldus introduced in 1501). He printed it well: Dibdin singled out the present edition for its presswork, mentioning no other except Jenson's. As in all early italics the capitals are upright, so occasional lines or words set entirely in capitals (sometimes letterspaced, but not as consistently as in Aldus's edition) provide graphic distinction without a second size or style. The compositors accidentally followed page 199 with page "100", continuing from there but skipping 253-254 and making a few other errors. We transcribe the title as it appears in the heading to liber I. In most libri it appears as Oratoriarum institutionarum. - With some transparent stains in the upper outside corner, barely visible after the first 3 leaves, and occasional minor foxing or browning, also mostly in the first few leaves, but otherwise in very good condition and including the final leaf with only Giunta's woodcut device, often lacking. The binding is rubbed and slightly loose, with the front hinge split, but the bookblock remains structurally sound. One of the earliest small-format editions of a classic of rhetoric and of the history of education. Adams Q 53. BM-STC Italian 546. Dibdin, Bibliogr. Decameron, p. 275. Edit 16, 28736. USTC 851766.
