Spine faded and with vertical folds from reading. Section browned and slightly dusty. With a clean owner's stamp of a well-known German biologist and Judaist on the title page. On approx. 15-20 pages some, partly unclean, underlinings in black and blue fineliner and red colored pencil. - Apart from that, an overall acceptable to still well-preserved copy of the new edition of the well-known standard work.‎

Cheshire. "Six conclusions touching the Holy Scripture and Church", a translation of Rainolds's "Sex theses de Sacra Scriptura, et Ecclesia", has a separate divisional title page; pagination and register are continuous. **** An influential treatise based on debates between John Rainolds and the English Catholic John Hart held at Oxford and London, first published in 1584. This copy belonged to Richard Grosvenor (1731-1802), politician and landowner, who lived at Eaton Hall in Cheshire. His son, Viscount Belgrave, was first marquis of Westminster. STC, 20627.‎

‎Nouvelle édition du recueil de sermons de Jean Raulin (1443-1514), prédicateur clunisien dont la réputation égala celles de Gabriel Barletta et d’Olivier Maillard, sortie des presses de Jehan de Marnef avec sa grande marque typographique au titre (Silvestre 1288). L'ouvrage est dédié à l'amiral Louis Malet de Graville (av. 1450-1516) auquel l'auteur explique qu'en raison du veuvage du dédicataire, il joint ces sermons sur le mariage et sur le veuvage, qu'il avait « autrefois écrits ». « Que le mariage soit honoré de tous et le lit nuptial sans souillure (Heb 13,4). Ainsi commencent les sermons sur le mariage du bénédictin Jean Raulin, édités pour la première fois en 1513 et réédités dès 1514, à la suite de son « Itinéraire du Paradis », un recueil de sermons sur la pénitence. De la part d'un moine et à la suite de sermons sur la pénitence, le thème est étonnant. Cet ensemble de douze sermons, complété de trois autres sur le veuvage, ne se présente pas comme les habituels sermons ad status ou comme ceux qui illustrent le thème des noces de Cana, prêchés en Carême. Ces sermons annexés à une littérature classique sur la pénitence sont une oeuvre de circonstance, destinée à répondre à des questions alors publiquement débattues, sur le sens et la valeur du mariage. ‎‘Members’ Calendar’ for 1913 printed in 1912. Co-operative Wholesale Society’s Printing Works Longsight Manchester. Reading Cooperative Society Limited came into existence in the 1860s as ‘Reading Industrial Co-operative Society’. A nice piece of ephemera from the high-tide mark of the co-operative movement. No other copy has been traced. 50 x 68 cm. A striking and attractive production in six columns printed in red olive-green and grey-black and black with border of raspberry leaves calendar split between the outer edges. Large illustration of ‘Llandudno and the Great Orme’ beneath the heading ‘Each for all & all for each. / Reading / Industrial Cooperative Society / Limited.’ Beneath this the two central columns are divided under the headings ‘Business Hours’ ‘Office Hours’ ‘Nomination of Officers’ ‘The Half-Yearly Accounts’ ‘Quarterly Meetings’ ‘Dividends will be paid’ ‘Women’s Guild’ ‘Co-operative News’ ‘The “Wheatsheafâ€â€™ ‘System of Business’ ‘Artificial Teeth’. Finally at the bottom in small print are six sections of ‘Postal Information’. In fair condition lightly aged with pin holes to corners slight wear to extremities. Folded three times with a couple of short closed tears the folds. The cartouche containing ‘MEMBERS’ CALENDAR / 1913’ has been coloured in light crayon presumably by a child. ‘Members’ Calendar’ for 1913 [printed in 1912].
