Belknap Harvard 1971 Hardcover in protected jacket. When John Millington Synge and Molly Allgood fell in love he was thirty-five. she nineteen. Their puritanical mothers did not approve so they pursued their love furtively. One thing they could do; they could write letters. He wrote hundreds of them and presumably she did too but her letters were destroyed. Tragically he had Hodgkin's disease and he died three years after they met. This book is Near Fine. It has a neat inscription on the front end paper otherwise it would be fine. No other marks no annotations and most emphatically this is not an ex library copy. Many of these first impressions ended up in libraries so first printings are fairly hard to come by. The jacket has done its job and it is now protected but there is a touch of sunning to the spine some minor chippings to the edges here and there and the price has been neatly clipped from the front flap. The book has a dated signature and an attractive blind stamp on the front end paper. No other marks. It was a wartime economy issue so the jacket is a delicate thin paper effort and all the more valuable as most of the copies available are usually found without one.
