In the original burgundy suede slipcase. With three large initials in burnished gold and four signed and numbered original etchings by Peter Klitsch. Printed in red and black. Signed in the colophon by the artist the binder and the publisher/translator. In mint condition.

This is the splendid deluxe version of a finely crafted private press edition of Wilde's fairy tales "The Nightingale and the Rose" "The Happy Prince" and "The Selfish Giant." It is the third work issued by the Bear Press founded in 1979 by literary scholar Wolfram Benda and still in operation. According to the firm's website "at a time when the craftsmanship and ethos of the artisan in bookmaking have been damaged by ever-increasing industrialization and neglect . . . The Bear Press . . . tries to achieve the highest possible degree of technical and artistic perfection in its printed works." The font used to print the text and the artist chosen to illustrate each work are carefully selected to express "the individual author's personality and intention." Even the discriminating aesthete Wilde 1854-1900 would be pleased with the choices here especially for the luxurious vellum printing: the type is set in refined Walbaum Antiqua and shown off with special effect by the creamy leaves; the etchings by Austrian artist Peter Klitsch b. 1934 are meticulous detailed and reminiscent of the work of Wilde's friend Aubrey Beardsley; and the binding is the epitome of tasteful restraint flawlessly executed with premium materials.

The three tales here first appeared in 1888 and are bittersweet in their themes of love and self-sacrifice. His stories for children were one of Wilde's early successes and DNB notes "Their permanent place in child affections refutes the vulgarism that Wilde's literary reputation arose from his legal notoriety. In all cases the fairy tales are on the child's side celebrating the courage and generosity of the poor and vulnerable while their satire mocks the kind of pomposity and hypocrisy children can recognize." We have been able to trace just two other copies of the vellum printing at auction in ABPC and RBH. [Printed by Chr. Scheufele Offizin, Stuttgart, for] Bear Press unknown

New York: New York Protestant Episcopal Press 1829. Very good. Broadside 10.5 x 9 inches. Old folds foxing creasing and toning with substantial but irregularly-trimmed margins. An unrecorded New York broadside advertising the opening of the New York Protestant Episcopal Press NYPEP and related activities at No. 46 Lumber Street in New York City in 1829. The text states that "PRINTING of every description will be executed for Churches Bible and Common Prayer-Book Societies Tract Societies Missionary or Education Societies and all other religious institutions of the Protestant Episcopal Church at the lowest rates and in the best manner" and that the new establishment will "also be the publication office of The Family Visiter and Sunday School Magazine; and of The Children's Magazine." The text also includes notes about the business of the organization as well as notices to "Booksellers who are members of the Protestant Episcopal Church" and "secretaries of religious and charitable associations." In addition to their printing and binding work the broadside states that the NYPEP will take charge of the depositories of five New York institutions -- the General Protestant Episcopal Sunday Union the New York Bible and Common Prayer-Book Society the Auxiliary New York Bible and Common Prayer-Book Society the New York Protestant Episcopal Tract Society and the New York Protestant Episcopal Sunday School Society. The bottom half of the broadside is taken up with a listing of the organization's Board of Trustees "Other Managers" the general agent book-keeper printer William Van Norden and binder Christian Brown along with a postscript with details on various forthcoming publications by the press. William Van Norden was a prolific printer in New York in the first half of the 19th century producing more than just religious works. He printed the collected works of Benjamin Franklin Hannah Moore's memoir and the Proceedings of the New York Historical Society among many other works and later helped produce The National Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans. We could locate no other copies of this broadside anywhere. [New York Protestant Episcopal Press] unknown
Santiago de Cuba & Guantanamo Bay: June 23 July 21-22 1898. Very good. Two broadsides each about 8 x 5 inches. Old folds minor wear unevenly trimmed likely at time of production. A pair of unit bulletins produced aboard the U.S. Flagship New York while anchored off the coast of Cuba during two slightly different moments of the Spanish-American War. The earlier bulletin is dated June 23 1898 and the second follows almost a month later; the Battle of Santiago took place between these dates during which the New York played a major role. The ship served as the flagship of Admiral Sampson of the combined "North Atlantic" and "Flying" squadrons dedicated to destroying Spanish naval vessels in the Caribbean. The present bulletins were prepared by the squad's captain French E. Chadwick and report on numerous movements of American military forces mainly of other ships as well as other war news. The earlier bulletin also reports on the recent landing of 7000 soldiers at Santiago de Cuba advancing towards Ensenada de los Altares. These bulletins are rare survivals of wartime printing and also even rarer examples of wartime printing aboard an American seagoing vessel. They also serve as a valuable record of the reporting of events and strategies employed by the American military during this period. The bulletins were apparently reprinted not long after the war ended but were greatly augmented; the present examples offer the opportunity to read the original content printed on board the New York during the conflict. Institutional holdings of the original bulletins are rare with scattered quantities reported at five places -- the Library of Congress Newberry Harvard the Pennsylvania Office of Commonwealth Libraries and the Huntington. Mexico 1770. Very good. Small broadside approximately 12.25 x 8.25 inches. Minor wear a couple of small chips at edges. Light toning and dust soiling. This single-page production printed in double-column format in Roman and italic types shows a mid-18th-century change to the Catholic marriage service and is essentially a cancel to be inserted into the liturgy book. The place and date of publication are based on typography and watermark. This scarce example of job printing for the church in Mexico is not located by the standard bibliographies and OCLC locates only one copy at the Bridwell Library. unknown
