Bei Bouchets Werk handelt es sich um ein bizarres literarisches Konglomerat von Gelehrsamkeit, Spaß, Moral und Obszönität. - Die für Hayn-Gotendorf "futuristisch" anmutenden Lithographien sind eher in expressionistischer Manier gestaltet und mit "EF" signiert: Bei dem Künstler könnte es sich um den ungarischen Maler und Grafiker Esteban Fekete handeln. Très rare manuel de calligraphie mis au point d’après des modèles de Louis Rossignol et de son élève André-François Roland. L'ouvrage s’ouvre sur une explication de la posture à adopter pour bien écrire, s’en suit une méthode sur la manière de tailler les plumes, puis viennent différents modèles de lettres et d’ornements calligraphiques (Italienne bâtarde, écriture ronde, etc.). Les planches ont été gravées à l’eau-forte et au burin par Le Parmentier, graveur de Sa Majesté. Louis Rossignol (1694-1739) est considéré comme l’un des plus importants maîtres calligraphes du XVIIIème siècle.

With 38 finely hand-colored botanical plates engraved by F. P. Nodder. Octavo collated and complete. Skillfully rebacked with end papers renewed; moderately age-toned and foxed throughout with the first and last few gatherings more heavily so; else a Very Good or better copy. The English edition of Rousseau's 'Lettres Elementaires sur la Botanique a Madame de L' first published posthumously in his Works printed in Geneva in 1782. "Only eight of the thirty-two letters in this popular work are by Rousseau the remaining twenty-four being the work of Martyn. . . . The 'lady' referred to was Madame Delessert the mother of the French financier Benjamin Delessert 1773-1847 who was a keen botanist and the owner of a famous herbarium and botanical library. . . . In 1788 the Letters were given further botanical value with the publication of Martyn's Thirty-eight plates with explanations . . ." Henrey II p.55-56. Very Good . iv267 pagination irregular but text complete1pp with 24 hand-colored aquatints by Thomas Rowlandson. Contemporary straight-grain morocco gilt boards framed in gilt and in blind with leaf-and-flower rolls rebacked with part of original spine and red morocco lettering piece laid down marbled end papers. A Very Good or better copy generally clean and bright with first and final leaves including title page foxed usual offsetting from plates very occasional finger-soiling. Abbey Life 268. Tooley 413. As early as 1809 the publisher Ackermann had hired Combe to write the letterpress to accompany many of Rowlandson's most successful illustrations including those for the final volume of the "Microcosm of London" and perhaps especially for the illustrations that resulted in the series of comic poetry for which Combe is still most famous and which earned him his best-known nickname Doctor Syntax: The Tour of Doctor Syntax in Search of the Picturesque and its two sequels 1812 1820 1821 The English Dance of Death 1815 1816 The Dance of Life 1817 and finally The History of Johnny Quae Genus the Little Foundling of the Late Doctor Syntax 1822.
