Un des 425 ex n° sur vélin d'Arches. 25 burins originaux de Michel Jamar, dont un sur la couverture, un frontispice et 23 hors-texte. Bel exemplaire. Artiste de talent, le graveur lorrain Michel Jamar (1911-1997) est l’auteur de nombreuses illustrations, gravures, peintures et ex-libris. Formé à L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Nancy où il est l’élève de Victor Prouvé, il allie les talents du peintre, du sculpteur, du céramiste, du décorateur, du buriniste mais c’est surtout comme graveur sur bois qu’il donne naissance à des œuvres des plus originales. Récompensé en 1981 par le grand prix de la gravure sur bois de l’Académie des beaux arts de France, son travail s’inscrit parmi l’œuvre des grands graveurs lorrains.

Volume in 4° antico, legatura coeva in piena pergamena, titolo manoscritto al dorso, sguardie (antica firma a pennino), frontespizio con bella marca tipografica lucchese, ampia dedicatoria al principe Querini, prefazione dell'autore, sommario, XXXII, 491 pp., errata. Quattro tavole ft. (su sei) di cui due grandi ripiegate. Opera davvero particolare ed interessante questa dell'abate ed archeologo lucchese, prende spunto da alcune osservazioni dell'autore sopra un Dittico d'avorio del 506 all'epoca rinvenuto in Lucca, unendo in questo compendio tutte le notizie, alcune riprese da vari e autorevoli autori, sull'argomento. La prima parte dell'opera è a carattere storiografico e tratta i Dittici in genere con un interessante disanima su alcune specifiche, come ad esempio, sulle materie adoperate per formare i Caratteri, con una succinta notizia di tutte quelle materie su cui un tempo scrissero gli Ebrei, gli Egizi, gli Etruschi, i Greci ed i Latini, ricercandone l'invenzione, l'uso e la durata, con l'indicazione di alcuni ritrovamenti, oppure sulla diversa Forma dei Libri antichi e dei molti e diversi nomi che furono loro dati, ancora sulle diverse specie di dittici e loro vario e differente uso, con la spiegazione degli strumenti usati per formare e sugellare i caratteri, sull'origine dei Calendari, dei Martirologi e delle Canonizzazioni da' Dittici; la seconda parte tratta dei dittici in particolare, prendendone in esame più di venticinque; mentre nella terza parte l'autore spiega alcuni Dittici e Trittici qui pubblicati per la prima volta, di cui molti conservati in Lucca. A completare l'opera un appendice su alcuni Necrologi e Calendari inediti. Splendida edizione originale, corredata di note e notizie bibliografiche, stampata a grandi margini su carta greve. Un vero peccato la mancanza delle due tavole, ma l'opera resta di indubbio valore ed interesse. In ottimo stato di conservazione.
