Vom Rohbau zur fertig durchgestalteten Anlage: In disser Ausgabe der Praxisreihe des Eisenbahn-Journals lässt sich ein anerkannter Meister seines Fachs über die Schulter schauen. ‎El Grito: A Journal of Contemporary Mexican-American Thought‎

‎El Grito: A Journal of Contemporary Mexican-American Thought Archive - 1969-74‎

‎1969. Chicano Mexican-American El Grito: A Journal of Contemporary Mexican-American Thought. Berkley: Quinto Sol Publications 1969-1974. Archive of 2 journals. Each have 84 pages. El Grito was published to highlight scholarship and creative work by Mexican Americans from the United States between 1967 and 1974. Included in this archive are; 1 El Grito: a journal of contemporary Mexican-American thought; vol. II #2 Winter 1969. Highlighted articles include "The Historical and Intellectual Presence of Mexican-Americans" "The Negro Movement as an Anti-Revolution" and collected narratives and poetry by Chicano writers; and 2 Chicano Drama El Grito Book Series; Year VII June-August 1974. The introduction begins with a brief summation of Chicano theatre and it's emphasis on Mayan and Aztec mythology. It's contents include five Chicano dramas written by Alurista Carlos Morton and Alfonso C. Hernandez. El Grito was published by Quinto Sol the first fully independent publishing house to surface from the Chicano movement in the 1960s. The name "Quinto Sol" is Spanish for "Fifth Sun" and it refers to the Aztec myth of creation and destruction. El Grito was the first national academic Chicano literary journal ever published in the U.S. The journal whose name is Spanish for "the Shout" was "intended to raise awareness at what we could call a pan-Chicano/a nationalistic level". Considered an intellectual and independent critical space it became a place where Chicano scholars authors and artists could work to debunk the "culture of poverty" and other negative stereotypes attributed to Mexican Americans in the media at the time. The authors published in El Grito drew attention to the biases in academic realms regarding Mexican-Americans and attempted to rectify these blind spots. The texts became an important resource for those wanting to learn about the newly instituted discipline of Chicano Studies. El Grito also published advertisements geared towards high schools and other university departments to stress the importance of Quinto Sol materials in the classroom. Through the journal El Grito Quinto Sol played a pivotal role in the process of institutionalizing Chicano culture as a legitimate field of inquiry. Binding is tight and pages are clean aside from the title pages having some pencil markings. Overall very good condition. unknown‎

Condition: The leather binding and boards are fairly heavily rubbed and worn with some lifting to the cloth of the upper board at the fore-edge. The title page is foxed and light scattered foxing throughout but remaining in strong readable condition. The inner binding is secure. One thing to note on the plates: although they are bound in the correct groupings they are not always in order so you may see offsetting to a plate which isn't opposing but having checked where this has happened the plate that has left the offsetting is present within a few pages either side. This would have happened when the rebinding was done. A very heavy book at nearly 4kg. Further images are available on request. ‎Medical Remedy Journal right before Spanish Flue‎

‎Pre Spanish Flue Manuscript Handwritten Medical Remedy Journal Including Remedies for Influenza Bronchitis Heart Disease Neuralgia et al. 1906-1915‎

‎1906. Manuscript medical remedy book from Devonport England compiled between 1903 and 1915 and preserving a striking record of everyday therapeutic practice in the years immediately preceding the global influenza pandemic that would soon devastate Europe. Written in ink in a clear and highly legible hand across 36 pages of a ruled notebook measuring 7.75" x 6.5" the volume gathers dozens of medicinal formulas for ailments ranging from bronchitis neuralgia rheumatism and digestive complaints to deep ulcers eye conditions sore throats winter coughs and childhood illnesses. Particularly notable are repeated entries for "influenza" appearing years before the outbreak retrospectively termed the Spanish Flu revealing how influenza already existed as a familiar and recurring medical threat within Edwardian Britain long before the catastrophic pandemic wave of 1918-1920 transformed it into one of the deadliest public health disasters of the modern era.<br /> <br /> The notebook therefore captures an important transitional moment in the history of epidemic disease: a period when influenza was treated as a common but serious seasonal illness through localized mixtures tonics expectorants and domestic pharmaceutical preparations rather than through coordinated state medicine or modern antiviral therapies. These entries provide unusually direct evidence of how ordinary practitioners dispensers or caretakers approached influenza treatment in the years immediately before the Spanish Flu pandemic altered both public consciousness and medical infrastructure surrounding contagious respiratory disease. The remedies themselves demonstrate the hybrid world of early twentieth-century medicine where domestic caregiving folk therapeutics and increasingly professionalized pharmacy overlapped. Familiar household substances such as witch hazel and paregoric appear beside pharmaceutical compounds later restricted or abandoned by mid-century medicine. Several preparations include age-specific dosages for children while others focus on strengthening mixtures cough remedies liniments lotions and wound treatments. A handful of entries are dated including one reading "June 29 1903" and another attributed to an individual identified as "A. Wilson."<br /> <br /> Accompanied by three inserted paper ephemera pieces including an index of herbs and chemicals and two additional recipe slips one bearing a postage stamp from the "Plymouth . Society Dispensing Dept. Fore St. Devonport." The overall character strongly suggests compilation by someone with regular access to a dispensary or chemist environment though not necessarily a formally licensed pharmacist operating instead within the fluid boundary between domestic medical care and industrialized pharmaceutical practice in prewar England. Well rubbed with losses to spine and extremities; interior remains clear and legible with minor foxing. Good overall condition. unknown‎

‎President Kennedy shaking hands with President João Goulart. of Brazil Original photograph.‎

‎Andrews Air Force Base: April 4 1962. Silver print. French text on separate sheet pasted to verso. Photographer's stamp verso. 18 x 13 cm. Summary Record of the 526th Meeting of the National Security Council With the Congressional LeadersWashington April 3 1964 2 p.m.The President opened the meeting with the Congressional Leaders by saying that his purpose was to bring them up to date on recent developments. Various Council members would report on current situations. He first called on Secretary Rusk for a summary of developments in Brazil.Secretary Rusk summarized our relations with Goulart including Goulart’s discussion with President Kennedy and later in Rio his discussion with the Attorney General. Despite our efforts to persuade Goulart to follow a democratic reform program and despite our efforts to support the Brazilian economy by making large loans Goulart had moved toward the creation of an authoritarian regime politically far to the left. The current revolt in Brazil was not the traditional “golpe†of the Latin American variety but rather a combination of governors government officials and military leaders who had joined together to oust Goulart when they became convinced that he was leading Brazil to economic and political disaster. As to the current situation the rebel government now has full control of the country. The military leaders in Brazil have long visualized themselves as guardians of the democratic process.Secretary Rusk described the major problems which the new government in Brazil faces. First are the economic problems which involve renegotiation of large loans coming due shortly and revision of those economic policies of Goulart which had resulted in inflation and economic difficulty. The Goulart men will have to be removed whichmeans a reorganization of the governmental structure. There is a reasonable prospect now that the new government will turn its attention to the major problems of Brazil. The U.S. did not engineer the revolt. It was an entirely indigenous effort. We now have fresh hope that Brazil can face up to its current problems. Andrews Air Force Base: April 4, 1962 unknown‎

‎Photograph of Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini top and their critic US Senator Edwin C. Johnson with actor Robert Taylor bottom during the controversy while in Rome. First edition of the photograph.‎

‎Roma: Oct. 13 1950 . Original silver print . 18.5 x 11cm. and text on separate sheet verso. .Robert Taylor was in Rome in 1950 to film the movie Quo Vadis based on the 1896 novel of the same title. During his time there his wife Barbara Stanwyck also joined him for several weeks. While Taylor was in Italy filming Quo Vadis gossip suggested he was involved with an extra on the film which led to the end of his marriage to Barbara Stanwyck in 1951.He was then photographed with US Senator Edwin C. Johnson a Democrat from Colorado who gained notoriety for a scathing speech delivered on the Senate floor targeting actress Ingrid Bergman. His attack stemmed from Bergman's extramarital affair with Italian film director Roberto Rossellini which resulted in the birth of a child before her divorce from her then-husband neurosurgeon Petter Lindström. Johnson's remarks were characterized by a strong moralistic tone. He dubbed Bergman "one of the most powerful women on Earth—a powerful influence for evil" according to History.com. He also criticized the "disgusting publicity campaign" surrounding their film "Stromboli" and even proposed federal licensing of actors and actresses with the threat of license revocation for scandalous personal behavior.Twenty-two years later in 1972 Senator Charles H. Percy of Illinois entered an apology into the Congressional Record for the attack on Bergman recognizing her as a "victim of bitter attack" and expressing regret for the "persecution" that caused her to leave the US at the height of her career. ‎Circa 1958-1960. Original silver print . 18 x 22c.NY Times: July 10 1958—A civil tribunal here annulled today the eight-year-old marriage of Ingrid Bergman film actress to Roberto Rossellini Italian motion-picture director. Miss Bergman had announced in Britain earlier this month that she intended to marry Lars Schmidt Swedish theatrical producer. The marriage of Miss Bergman and Signor Rossellini was contracted by proxy at Ciudad Juarez Mexico on May 24 1950. Today the court found that at that time the actress then a Swedish citizen was under her country's legislation still legally married to Dr. Peter Lindstrom her first husband. Miss Bergman had obtained a Mexican divorce from him in February 1950 but failed to have it registered in Sweden. Dr. Lindstrom later obtained a divorce from her in an American court and remarried. Today's verdict is not final The public prosecutor who in an annulment action before an Italian civil court acts as “defensor of the marital bond†has thirty days to take the case before an appeal court. He said that he had not decided whether he would do so." Circa 1958-1960 unknown‎
