He is now known for his "Spectacle de la nature" a most popular work of natural history. Pluche son of a baker was born in Rheims in a street now named after him. He became a teacher of rhetoric. The Bishop of Laon made him head of the town's college a post he accepted to escape judicial consequences of opposing the papal bull Unigenitus 1713 He withdrew in 1749 to La Varenne-Saint-Maur near Paris where he died. His "Spectacle de la nature ou Entretiens sur les particularites de l'Histoire naturelle qui ont paru les plus propres à rendre les jeunes gens curieux et à leur former l'esprit" was published in 1732 and widely translated all over Europe. Although it influenced many to become naturalists it was a work of popularization not of science. This antique volume is bound in quarter red leather and marbled paper-covered boards with raised bands and a gilt-lettered label to the spine. The book shows external wear with rubbing and loss of material to the covers. The spine displays sunning. Minor loss of material is visible at the slightly bumped corners. The binding is sound. A previous owner's name appears on the front flyleaf with bookdealer's notes in pencil on the pastedown. A number of pages display toning and/or foxing at the fore edge. This work is illustrated with a frontispiece and 36 mostly fold-out plates. Dedicated to influential French author Boris Vian polymath poet singer translator critic inventor and engineer remembered for his novels which featured a highly individual writing style with numerous made-up words subtle wordplay and surrealistic plots. His most well known work is titles 'Froth on the Daydream'.Edited by Noel Arnaud with contribution by numerous authors. The trade edition. Paris France: Revue Generale des Publications Francaises et Etrangeres 1958. 220 x 143 mm. Very Good. Inscribed to the Belgian surrealist and one-time Dadaist René Magritte with a few pencilled annotations to the lower cover which might be in the painter's hand. Arnaud has written on the first leaf 'a René Magritte Amicalement N.A.' picking out the letters 'DADA' vertically in his inscription. Arnaud's brief history of Dadaism is browned with folds and fraying to the paper edges and along the fold of the spine. On the lower cover are written in pencil about a dozen numbers as if calculations but not quite in an unidentified hand which may be that of Magritte but must post-date Arnaud's gift of this book to the artist.
