First Edition first printing. 4to. xv 160pp. Reddy-pink cloth lettered and ruled in gold at the spine and with the publisher's blue top edge stain just fractionally faded. With a colour lithographic frontispiece and thirty colour plates plus more than fifty captioned black and white photographs over 32-pages. The head and base of the backstrip fractionally bruised and with a small area of fading to the cloth at the backstrip. A short slit to the front hinge but the binding still perfectly sound. Very good indeed in the splendid double-spread colour pictorial dust wrapper designed by Roland Collins non-price-clipped but slightly toned at the spine panel with a little chafing to the natural folds two centimetres of loss from the head of the spine panel impacting no text and a fraction more loss from the base which just impacts the imprint lettering. Carrington's landmark book about interior design splendidly enhanced by Roland Collins lithographs Collins studied at St Martin's School of Art where his teachers included Leon Underwood and Vivian Pitchforth and in 1937 at the age of just eighteen exhibited at the Royal Academy. The introductory essay discusses the representation of English villages through the reading of travel guides and the works of Austen Eliot and Cobbett and highlights the traditional aesthetic villages are expected to have. In the publisher's original paper-covered stiff cards. With the original spine rebacked. Externally smart with rubbing and slight bumping to the extremities. A few spots and handling marks to the paper. Internally firmly bound.
