<p>A good copy of the 1st edition in the original blue decorative cloth binding with 12 hand coloured plates. The binding has blind stamped decoration to both boards a central gilt decoration and title to the front board and gilt titles and designs to the spine. The binding has some rubbing to the corners which are turned inwards and to the edges. The central decoration on the front board is slightly dulled and the boards are darkened towards the edges. The spine is slightly dulled with some pulling to the ends. There is a paler scuff line on the back board close to the spine. All page edges gilted. The original yellow endpapers are present. Contents: frontispiece lacking the tissue guard; title; contents; plate list pp viii; text with some black and white illustrations and 11 further tissue-guarded plates pp 1-112. The plates are not bound in sequence. There is a neat gift inscription 'to Wm Llewellyn Salisbury 28 December 1889' at the top of the title page. The contents are very clean with some darkening to the page edges. The plates are brightly coloured. There is occasional foxing: to the plain side of the endpapers; the frontispiece; the verso of plates IV and IX; and p 51. Plate VII has a light spot at the top. London: Sampson Low Son and Co. 1857 A very good copy in the original green decorative cloth binding with 20 fine hand coloured plates. Aeg. The binding has a gilt design gilt titles and blind stamping to the front board gilt design and titles to the spine and blind stamping to the back board. It has been rebacked and is sound and tight with wear to corners and a slightly dulled spine. There is some marking to the front board but overall the binding is sound and clean. New endpapers matching the original. This is the first publication of the combined volume - Ocean Gardens is a 2nd edition - enlarged and corrected by the author and River Gardens is a 1st. Contents: hand coloured frontispiece with guard; title old signature at the top; contents list 2pp; plate list; text pp 1-117 with 11 further hand coloured plates; frontispiece to River Gardens with guard; title; contents 2 pp; plate list; text pp 1-108 with 7 further hand coloured plates.
