‎[BLONDEAU (Nicolas), Noël (François)].‎

‎[Manuscrit].

‎A Berlin, 1753.

Handwritten ledgers and some typed letters are creased or torn on edges due to storage. <br /> <br /> John Chapman Wilson was an American stockbroker turned theater director and producer. Wilson met Noël Coward around 1925 and by 1930 was both his lover and his business manager. In 1934 with Coward and others Wilson established Transatlantic Productions with exclusive production rights to Coward's plays in the United States. He began producing shows on Broadway in 1935 and is probably best known for directing the original productions of Kiss Me Kate 1948 and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes 1949 Carol Channing's Broadway debut.<br /> <br /> In 1944 Wilson produced Bloomer Girl at the Shubert Theater a comedy starring a female lead character who rejects hoop skirts despite her father's ownership of a hoop skirt company and opts for more comfortable bloomers instead. The show explored feminist abolitionist and anti-slavery themes. It was choreographed by Agnes de Mille and featured a civil war ballet scene. Bloomer Girl had a successful Broadway run a national tour including a Los Angeles residency and a later TV adaptation though it is seldom revived.<br /> <br /> This archive includes:<br /> - 1938 cable from Coward to Wilson referencing Hugh French an actor that worked on their production of Operette that year and the SS Samaria<br /> - Bloomer Girl Playbills from October 1944 and March 1946 at the Shubert Theater<br /> - Three issue of The Magazine of New York City Center of Music and Drama from 1947 during the show's six week run there<br /> - Two typed copies of a review by Sidney Phillips during their preview shows at the Forrest Theatre in Philadelphia<br /> - Five copies of typed letters and one telegram sent from Wilson to the cast dated between November 1944 to June 1947 some congratulatory and some disciplinarian in nature<br /> - Several newspaper clippings some are duplicates of show reviews and a few referencing film or television adaptation possibilities<br /> - One clipping about Gentlemen Prefer Blondes<br /> - Five pages of ledgers and budgetary information both typed and handwritten referencing both the stage production and potential film. unknown‎

‎A Merry Christmas from Mr. and Mrs. John Barry Ryan: Christmas 1932 with original Rackham cover art‎

‎New York City London 1932. Green paper wrapss with color illustration pasted to front cover string bound bifolium printed in black and red ink on Vidalon paper signed by Rackham on the first page very good. <p><br /> John Barry Ryan Jr. was the grandson and heir of prominent financier Thomas Fortune Ryan. In 1928 he married Margaret Nin Kahn daughter of Otto Kahn whose wealth and mustache were the inspiration for "Mr. Monopoly" and was sometimes known as "the King of New York."<br /> <br /> The Ryans were both collectors and patrons of the arts. A limited number of Rackham's The Night Before Christmas were printed with an extra leaf tipped in to the the front of the book that reads "A Merry Christmas from Mr. and Mrs. John Barry Ryan Christmas 1931" and supposedly distributed to friends and family. <br /> <br /> This is their Christmas greeting from 1932. Printed inside is Church's "Yes Virginia There is a Santa Claus." It seems to be a sort of prenatal gift as their daughter Virginia was born on February 9 1933. Virginia Ogilvy Countess of Airlie was the first American to be a lady-in-waiting serving Elizabeth II until her death in 2022 and was a Dame Commander of the Royal Victorian Order.<br /> <br /> The Santa Claus illustration on the cover seems to be specially commissioned by Ryan for the occasion as "Copyright 1932 by John Barry Ryan" is printed right beneath it. This image was not included in Rackham's illustrations for The Night Before Christmas and is stylistically different enough that it isn't believed to be an abandoned plate for that project. Arthur Rackham signed this copy on the bottom of the first page.<br /> <br /> Scarce with one holding in OCLC and no previous sales records.</p> . unknown‎

‎[Christmas in America] Augusta de Grasse Stevens (1852-1894), daughter of Samuel S Stevens (d1854) of Albany, NY, and his wife,‎

‎Galley proof of magazine article 'Christmas in America Fifty Years Ago' by Augusta de Grasse Stevens with note from 'E. Lowe' to her mother Mrs Butterworth; and manuscript biography of 'the young and rising novelist' in her sister Lady Evans's hand.‎

‎Neither item dated. 1890s. Lowe's note on the proof from 7 Harley Gardens SW London. Both items in very good condition on lightly-aged paper. Item One galley proofs: On piece of 13 x 49 cm. paper. In manuscript at head: '7 Harley Gardens SW Monday Dear Mrs Butterworth The Printer will send you a proper proof tomorrow Yours in haste E Lowe'. The first part only in small type with one minor correction. The article is attributed to Augusta de Grasse Stevens in Helen O. Black's 'Notable Women Authors of the Day' 1893. Item Two manuscript biography: 4pp. 4to. With a few minor emendations. The account probably composed as well as written out by her sister Marie de Grasse Lady Evans d.1920 begins: 'Miss A de Grasse Stevens the young and rising novelist whose writings have given her a high position in England and America is the youngest daughter of the late Samuel Stevens of Albany N.Y.; who was one of the greatest Barristers or Councillors at Law in America. His distinguished legal attainments made him prominent in the highest courts and it was said that from the great causes he conducted the foundation of the Patent Law of the United States was largely owing. He was the life long friend of Daniel Webster and with him was engaged or opposed in most of his great cases; which led Mr. Webster to say that he regarded Mr. Stevens "as a lawyer first of any man living in the country."' After describing her antecedents the author turns to the subject of the biography: 'Miss Stevens has travelled much abroad and is highly accomplished. With her mother she has resided in London for the past ten years surrounded by a wide circle of warm friends & occupying a high social position. She is of medium height and slight a blonde cendree with gray-blue eyes . Her working hours are from 10 to 3 every day; the afternoons and evenings being devoted to home or social pleasures. During her residence in London she has occupied the position of special art critic to the New York Times where her initials "A de G S" must be known to a wide circle of readers. She is a constant contributor to the Saturday review in which journal her descriptions of Old American Customs have called forth much interest and praise. She writes also for Time the Womans World the Argosy and many other magazines and papers in England and America.' The author concludes with a description of her subject's books. Neither item dated. [1890s.] Lowe's note on the proof from 7 Harley Gardens, SW [London]. unknown‎
