Present Laughter : A Light Comedy In Three Acts

The First UK Printing published by William Heinemann Ltd. London in 1943. 8vo. purple cloth backstrip lettered in gilt; in the scarce publisher's wrapper clipped printed in black and yellow with wartime advertisement for BBC radio's Britain Calls the World to the front flap and list of other Coward plays to the lower panel; THE BOOK is in Very Good condition text evenly toned with some offsetting to the front free endpaper and half title; very slightly dulled at backstrip with light rubbing and sunning at spine tips; the scarce WRAPPER is price-clipped and also in Very Good condition with minimal shelf-wear and markings slight creased to folds with small losses at edges corners and more so to the spine tips up to 0.5cm in depth not affecting text one 1.5cm closed tear along spine and some minor splitting to the front flap fold. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. Originally written in 1939 Present Laughter was in the process of rehearsals when WWII broke out. Consequently it was not performed on stage until 1942. The plot follows a successful and egotistical protagonist Gary Essendine as he prepares for a role in South Africa. Along the way he must deal with a mid-life crisis women who attempt to seduce him and many other farcical scenarios. Semi-autobiographical Coward played himself in the first few performances and later claimed that once he sat down to write it he had completed all three acts within a mere six days. The play was "a very light comedy he wrote written with the sensible object of providing me with a bravura part". The play was most recently performed at the Old Vic in 2019 with Andrew Scott in the leading role. A cheap wartime production and very scarce with the wrapper in such collectible condition. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
William Heinemann Ltd., London hardcover

Pretty Polly and other stories
Garden City: Doubleday & Company 1965. Hardcover. 8vo. Green and blue cloth with blue spine lettering pictorial dust jacket. 227pp. Near fine/very good. Touch of minor edgewear to bright jacket. Lovely and tight first edition of this short story trio the others being "Mrs. Capper's Birthday" and "Me and the Girls" by the debonair English dramatist writer composer director actor and singer whose best work epitomizes sophisticated wit and urbanity. This sharp copy bears his bold eccentric signature in blue ink on inner flyleaf. This most unusual copy though also bears three autograph additions: Each of these stories inspired a film version and the signature of a film cast member from each -- all on fine matching heavy stock 4¼" X 3" cards -- is tipped to the blank leaf preceding the individual title pages of each. "Pretty Polly" inspired a British television film version and tipped in is a large bold signature in blue ink of LYNN REDGRAVE 1943-2010 portrays title character Polly Barlow who dates it 24 March 1971 at upper right. "Mrs. Capper's Birthday" inspired a 1985 television film and tipped in is a large bold signature in blue ballpoint of MAX WALL 1908-90 portrays Mr. Godsall who dates it 3 July 1981 at upper right. "Me and the Girls" likewise inspired a 1985 television film and tipped in is a large bold signature in blue ballpoint of TOM COURTENAY b. 1937 portrays George Banks who dates it 28 February 1969 and below his signature inscribes it "Good wishes / Richard." Kroch's & Brentano's "1st Edition Circle" bookmark laid in as are Redgrave Wall and Courtenay's original transmittal envelopes. Quite an intriguing copy. Doubleday & Company hardcover

It concerns a divorced couple who while honeymooning with their new spouses discover that they are staying in adjacent rooms at the same hotel. Despite a perpetually stormy relationship they realise that they still have feelings for each other. Its second act love scene was nearly censored in Britain as too risqué. Coward wrote one of his most popular songs "Some Day I'll Find You" for the play. Filmed several times for both movies and television the best known version is Sidney Franklin's 1931 film featuring Norma Shearer Robert Montgomery Reginald Denny and Jean Hersholt. QUADRILLE: A Play in Three Acts.
London: William Heinemann Ltd. 1952. First edition first printing. First edition first printing. Inscribed presentation copy. Original red cloth with gilt and gilt on black lettering to spine and front panel with facsimile of the author's signature stamped in gilt to the lower edge of the front panel. In the dustwrapper illustrated by Cecil Beaton. A very near fine copy the binding square and firm the cloth and gilt bright the contents clean throughout. The pages are a little toned to margins owing to the paper stock used and there is a tiny stain c. 4 mm to the upper outer margins of pp. 49-53. Spine tips are a little softened and rubbed. In the bright dustwrapper rubbed and nicked to corners and folds with an area of loss c. 0.5 cm deep at the head of the spine. Loosely laid in to this copy is a folded sheet of paper headed with a printed monogram and address "Heronden House / Belgrave Square". As this is the fictional address of the central characters in the play the Marquess and Marchioness of Heronden there is no such house in Belgrave Square it is likely that this item of stationery is a stage prop a letter left for the Marchioness by her husband plays a significant part in the plot. Not price-clipped 8s 6d net to the front flap. A very attractive association copy. Inscribed by the author in blue ink to the title page "For Ginette et Marie Antoinette / With love / Noël". The recipients were Coward's friends Ginette Spanier Jenny Yvonne Spanier 1904-1988 and her husband Paul-Emile Seidmann who was affectionately nicknamed Marie-Antoinette by Coward. According to Philip Hoare in his biography of Coward the author met the couple while holidaying in France during the summer of 1946 and he would later provide the Foreword to Spanier's 1959 autobiography 'It Isn't All Mink'.
