Edited by Henry Noel Humphreys 1810-79. 6 100pp. Elaborate chromolithographed border by Humphreys on the first page remaining text pages printed in black and gold with 2-color initials. London: Longman Brown Green Longmans and Roberts 1851. 194 x 147 mm. Skillfully recased and rebacked; boxed. Minor soiling and fore-edge wear on first few leaves but very good. 19th-century gift inscription on the title. Bookplate.

First Edition. "According to his preface Shakespeare was the first author Henry Noel Humphreys thought of honoring with a modern printed illuminated book . . . Humphreys's enshrinement of Shakespeare's words is completed by the black papier-mâché binding with a terracotta cameo portrait of Shakespeare on the front cover and Shakespeare's initials in a similar oval on the back cover. In the first edition the pieced strapwork is placed over a striated gold foil while the second edition 1857 has a red background and an indented bevel at the outer edge. This cover the illuminated first page and Humphreys's remarks about selecting ornament that Shakespeare might have requested himself reflects the emergence of an understanding that there was a difference between the style of the Middle Ages and that of the 16th and 17th centuries" Beckwith p. 43. Seven murderers by Christmas Humphreys Circumstantial evidence.--The Chinese murder.--The murders on the moor.--The "lonely inn" murder.--The murder round the door.--The button and badge mystery.--The Bournemouth murder.--The Gutteridge murder
Heinemann ltd. London 1931 1931. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/No Jacket. 1st ed. 1st printing ; xvi 292 p. front. plates ports. map. 22cm. LCCN 31011603 OCLC 4792836 LC KD371.M8 H867 1931 ; red cloth no dustjacket ; Contents: Circumstantial evidence.--The Chinese murder.--The murders on the moor.--The "lonely inn" murder.--The murder round the door.--The button and badge mystery.--The Bournemouth murder.--The Gutteridge murder ; In the Chinese murder In June 1928 Chung Yi-miao a Chinese Columbia University student murdered his bride Wai Sheung-miao Wai Sheung Sui Miao while on their honeymoon in Borrowdale Gates Hotel near Keswick England and she was found in Cumma Catta wood. Her body was found strangled with her expensive jewelry missing. Chung was convicted and executed at Strangeways Jail on December 6 1928 after his appeal was rejected. often referred to as the "Chinese Honeymoon Murder" was a notable early-20th-century case involving Asian tourists in Britain. ; In the Lonely Inn murder George Walter Frederick Hayward would be the last person to be executed behind the grim walls of Nottingham Prison. There was little doubt that Hayward was guilty of the murder of Mrs Amy Collinson wife of the landlord of the New Inn now called the Lantern Pike at Little Hayfield in the Peak District. The crime was discovered by Mrs Collinson's husband when he returned home from working in Glossop on an October night in 1927 to find his isolated pub locked and in darkness. When he got inside he found his wife dead in a pool of blood on the kitchen floor her throat cut from ear to ear. Evidence suggested she had been battered from behind as she cleared the fire grate then dragged across the floor - out of sight of a window - where the killer had used a carving knife to finish her off. About £40 - money used for the till float - was missing. At today's values Mrs Collinson was killed for around £2000. Jobless traveller George Hayward a friend of the couple but a man saddled with debt quickly fell under suspicion and when police searched his house they found money stuffed up the chimney. They also found blood on his clothing but the most crucial evidence was discovered thanks to a spider's web. A sharp-eyed constable searching around a cistern in Hayward's house noticed a broken web. He checked inside the cistern and there he found a piece of lead pipe. Hayward had used it to batter Mrs Collinson. Hayward's trial was held in February 1928 at Derby Assizes in front of Mr Justice Hawke. It was noted by the local reporters that each morning the judge had a vase of fresh flowers on his bench. On opening day it was white lilac and daffodils. The case became known as "the lonely inn murder". ; Wallace Benton a 70-year-old smallholder. of Ttlnev Saint Lawrence. Norfolk was committed for. tria lat Terrlngton Saint Clement Petty Sessions charged with the wlilful murder of Thomas Herbert Williamson. ; In the Button and Badge mystery On February 9 1918 16-year-old clerk Nellie Grace Trew left her home at Well Hall to change a book at Plumstead Library and never returned-her body was found strangled and assaulted on Eltham Common the next morning alongside a bone overcoat button and military badge threaded together with wire. When co-workers at Hewson Manufacturing recognised the distinctive Leicester Regiment tiger badge in newspaper photos as belonging to David Greenwood-who claimed to have sold it for two shillings-police discovered not only was the missing button matched by a tear in his buttonless coat but that he was a former neighbor of the murdered girl leading to his conviction despite protests of innocence that would echo through history. ; extremely scarce Humphries title ; FINE

Heinemann ltd., London, [1931] hardcover
