Elle est illustrée de 43 planches satiriques légendées dont un frontispice et un titre-frontispice qui porte la date de 1837. Reliure postérieure ca 1880 en demi chagrin brun. Dos à faux-nerfs orné de caissons et filets à froid. Titre doré. Brunissures sur le verso du faux-titre sinon ensemble très propre avec de rares piqûres. Il est rare de rencontrer les gravures sans rousseurs en raison du papier utilisé qui se trouve le plus souvent fortement bruni ou roussi. Légères traces de frottement. Bel exemplaire. Comme pour toutes les oeuvres de Dickens ce roman parut au préalable en feuilletons. Reliure anglaise en demi veau noir glacé à coins. Dos à faux nerfs orné de filets à froid et dorés. Pièce de titre en maroquin bordeaux. Traces de frottements aux mors coiffes nerfs et coins. Plats également frottés. Alors que le papier du texte est bien propre celui des gravures porte constamment des brunissures surtout dans les marges un cas presque systématique dans les éditions de Dickens. Ex libris manuscrit en page de garde et haut de la page de titre : James White Bonchurch. Neuvième roman publié par Dickens et le premier des grands romans panoramiques qui peignent la société Bleak house vit le jour en France en 1858 sous le titre : La maison d'âpre-vent. Profonde originalité à l'époque le roman utilise deux narrateurs l'un à la troisième personne l'autre à la première. L'opposition des deux narrations stigmatise le rapport de l'individu au fonctionnement de la société. Les planches ne portent aucune légende ; les 27 premières ont une pagination en bas de page les suivantes ne portent aucune indication et semblent avant la lettre avec une indication de pagination au crayon gris. Notre volume possède plusieurs caractéristiques attestant du tout premier tirage : Ligne 29 p. 260 : ""holding"" ; p. 341 ligne 1 : ""inbe-licate"" ; p. 342 ligne 5 : ""S. Veller"" ; p. 432 le F de Posthumous papers of est mal imprimé. Le titre gravé est en second état avec le nom de Tony Weller au-dessus du porche le premier état ayant simplement Veller. Reliure en pleine basane d'époque noire. Dos lisse orné de 3 fers à froid d'un fer doré et de multiples roulettes. Double filet d'encadrement sur els plats. Un accroc en tête. Ensemble très frotté avec rayures sur les plats. 2 coins rognés les 2 autres émoussés. Le feuillet d'errata le frontispice et le titre gravé portent des adhésifs de restauration anciens en marge interne le feuillet d'errata en a également deux plus petits latéralement. Toutes les planches gravées ont des brunissures tout autour des gravures le frontispice et le titre gravé en étant constellés. La marge externe du frontispice a été arrachée. Toutes les pages imprimées sont très propres à l'inverse des gravures le papier étant très différent. Très belle impression sur velin teinté d'une grande modernité si on la compare aux impressions françaises de la même époque. Mention en page de titre de troisième édition. Préface à la première et à la seconde édition. 2 frontispices et 7 planches sur velin fort dans chacun des volumes par George Cruikshank. John Ruskin affirma qu'après Rembrandt personne n'avait gravé de scènes aussi fines. Bien qu'il soit indiqué manuscritement sur la page de garde ""Première édition illustrée"" il s'agit sans doute d'une erreur puisque la première série en originale et la seconde étaient également illustrés par Cruikshank. Reliures anglaises de la fin du XIXe en plein veau blond signées July File. Dos à nerfs ornés de caissons dorés. Pièces de titre de maroquin rouge pièces de tomaison de maroquin rouge. Encadrement aux formes complexes sur les plats. Tête dorée. Etui en papier marbré brun avec bordures de maroquin havane. Quelques petits points bruns sur les dos sinon exceptionnel exemplaire au papier immaculé d'une parfaite fraîcheur ce qui est d'une très grande rareté pour les oeuvres de Dickens notamment les gravures. Le papier utilisé est différent de ceux habituellement utilisé pour les oeuvres de Dickens et s'apparente à un tirage en grand papier plus épais. L'illustration exécutée selon les indications très précises de l'auteur comprend un frontispice un titre gravé avec une vignette et 38 planches par Hablot Knigt Browne dont une à la manière noire : On the dark road. Texte sur vélin teinté. Reliure en demi chagrin rouge d'époque. Dos à nerfs orné. Auteur et titre dorés. Tête dorée. Marges du frontispice du titre gravé et des gravures brunies comme c'est habituellement le cas dans les éditions anglaises de Dickens. Texte propre exempt de rousseurs. Traces de frottements. Bel exemplaire. Roman écrit dans une veine nettement plus sombre mettant en scène l'orgueil démesuré d'un père tyrannique animé par l'ambition face à l'amour indéfectible de sa fille qu'il ignore totalement.
