Although only three parts had been issued prior to his death publication of the work continued and on completion with Part 6 of all available material the vast army of readers was left high and dry as to ‘The Mystery.' The Author during the writing of the story never disclosed the ultimate development of his plot" Hatton and Cleaver.

John Jasper's Secret was the first of many attempts to solve The Mystery of Edwin Drood. The Personal History of David Copperfield. With Illustrations by H.K. Browne. The two points not in their first state are p. 132 line 20 "screamed" for "screwed" and double end quotes on p. 368 line 24.

Publisher's 'variant' binding of moderate olive green fine-diaper grain cloth; the front and back covers entirely stamped in blind with a three line border which encloses a rectangular frame that occupies the length of the covers. Within the frame there is an ornament of leaves and stems in each corner and a chain like design that runs along its inner surface; each segment of the chain encloses s four-headed flower and is bordered by a nipple 30 on each cover: 10 at each side and 5 each at the top and bottom. The spine is stamped in blind with; the lettering is in gold DAVID/COPPERFIELD between the first and second panels and CHAs. DICKENS centered within the third panel from the top. Moddie Miller Edinburgh on front paste-down.

Some small and very neat repairs to spine extremities. Inner hinges expertly and almost invisibly repaired. Spine very slightly faded a few very minor and pale stains on the cloth sides corners very slightly bumped with a little show-through of the boards. A very good copy the plates remarkably clean and fresh for this book.

Following the serial publication of the novel in parts May 1849 - Nov. 1850 the novel was published in book form on November 14 1850.

"As is well known this novel being largely biographic was the first one by Dickens written in the first person. The original sales did not exceed 25000 copies its later popularity more than equalized the failure as an early money-maker. With many lovers of the author's works 'David Copperfield' ranks as the finest of his writings. With a book which gave to the world such characters as Betsy Trotwood Micawber the Pegottys and Mr. Dick to mention only a few it would have been strange if it had been otherwise. The rather meagre profits again brought to the author the necessity for a personally-owned and conducted periodical and this subsequently formulated itself into his Household Words.

Smith I:9. The three-decker publication date was 9 November 1838 and within a week at Dickens's insistence the title-pages were changed to include his name and the "Church" version of the final plate "Rose Maylie and Oliver" was substituted for the "Fireside" version. The true first issue is quite rare.

Smith I 4; Gimbel A27. London: Richard Bentley, 1838 unknown books

London: Bradbury & Evans 1848. Time Consoler of Affliction and Softener of Anger"
Scarce in the 'Primary' Cloth Binding

DICKENS Charles. Dombey and Son. London: Bradbury & Evans 1848.

First edition first issue with the 'eight-line errata' following all but a very few of the points in Smith in book form of Dickens' seventh novel bound from the original monthly parts with stab-holes present in the inner margins of gatherings. Octavo 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 in; 222 x 138 mm. xvi 1 errata 1 blank 624 pp. Engraved frontispiece titlepage and thirty-eight plates after Hablot K. Browne "Phiz" including the 'dark' plate "On the Dark Road" facing p. 547.

Some of the plates with light foxing mainly marginal otherwise a very clean and partially uncut example.

Publisher's 'primary' binding of moderate olive-green fine-diaper grain cloth; the front and back covers entirely stamped in blind with a three-line border which encloses a rectangular frame that occupies the length of the covers. The frame contains an ornament of leaves and stems in each corner and a chain-like design that runs along its inner edge; each segment of the chain encloses a four-headed flower and is bordered by a nipple. The spine is lettered in gilt and stamped in blind with a thick band at its top and bottom and four rectangular panels. Original pale orange-yellow coated endpapers. With nearly all of the 'internal flaws' mentioned by Smith uncorrected. Front joint head and tail of spine and inner hinges expertly and almost invisibly repaired spine slightly faded. An excellent example far better than is usually seen of this now hard to find Dickens novel in the original cloth.

"Dombey and Son originally appeared in twenty numbers bound in nineteen monthly parts the last forming a double number from October 1846 - April 1848. It was published in book form on April 12 1848. at 21s.

Dombey and Son contains the first published example of a so-called dark plate which was created by a machine process that tinted the etched plate and heightened its black-and-white contrast. The one dark plate in Dombey and Son is "On the Dark Road" p. 547. The smooth blending of light and shadow on this illustration vividly contrasts it with the other illustrations in the novel and is a fine example of the dark plate process." Plates facing pp. 387 and 386 transposed as per Michael Sadleir's copy at UCLA and all of the other thirty-four first issue points. According to Smith "An earlier 13-line errata leaf exists with the same data that is found on the 14-line leaf; the setting was changed to 14-lines for a better balance."

Octavo 8 11/16 x 5 7/16 inches; 220 x 139 mm. xiv errata with 14 lines verso blank 624 pp. Forty etched plates including frontispiece and title-page vignette by Hablot K. The original cloth is near fine with no fading and just the bare minimum of strengthening at the spine ends and slight wear to the lower corners. The gilt lettering is bright and fresh. The plates have light to moderate foxing which is mainly confined to the blank margins. There is a 3/8 inch diameter stain on the margin of the plate facing page 160 and a light marginal stain on the facing leaves. Closed tear on margin of O2 pp. 195/6 corner 3/8 x 1/2 inch torn away from FF4. Light foxing to end-papers and first and last leaves only. The text block remarkably clean and fresh. Overall this is an exceptional copy of a title rarely found in better condition. Housed in an early fleece-lined green cloth clamshell case.

Martin Chuzzlewit is listed as number five in Michael Sadleir's list of Charles Dickens comparative scarcities.

The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit originally appeared in twenty numbers bound in nineteen monthly parts January 1843 - July 1844. This the first edition in book form appeared on July 16 1844 at 21s. and was the last of Dickens's picaresque novels. Dickens thought it to be his best work - but his readers disagreed. In fact Martin Chuzzlewit was the first of his novels to lose readers during serialization and the publisher Chapman and Hall suggested that Dickens's fees should be reduced. This never happened but it caused a rift that was not bridged until Chapman and Hall published A Tale of Two Cities in 1859. Dombey and Son 1848 David Copperfield 1850 Bleak House 1853 Hard Times 1854 and Little Dorrit 1857 were all published by Bradbury and Evans. London: Chapman and Hall, 1844 unknown books

Two neat three-quarter inch closed splits to upper joint at head and tail and one short closed split to lower joint at head.

The nicest copy we have ever seen unsophisticated and near fine: better than the famed William E. Self copy which is bumped rubbed and shows distress to the spine Christie's-NY April 2 2008 lot 60. Housed in a full plum pigskin drop-front clamshell box.

With an ALs with original autograph envelope by Dickens to one Thomas Ellis Bramale Esq. dated August 5 1839:

"Sir I have very great pleasure in complying with your request and beg to thank you cordially for the obliging expressions with which it is accompanied. I am Sir Your very obedient servant Charles Dickens."

Nicholas Nickleby was originally published in twenty numbers bound in nineteen monthly parts the last part as a double number from April 1838 through October 1839. The first edition in book form was made up from these parts. "It was the novelist's intention to expose in this story the terrible abuses practiced in the cheap boarding-schools of Yorkshire and in order that he realize their true character he determined to investigate for himself the real facts as to the condition of those notorious seminaries Accordingly at the end of January 1838 he and 'Phiz' started on this memorable journey in bitterly cold weather and visiting several schools in the locality they came into direct contact with the proprietors. One of these was William Shaw the identical schoolmaster who some years previously had been heavily fined for what was represented at the trial as gross maltreatment of his pupils" Kitton Dickens and His Illustrators p. 75. It was Shaw upon whom Dickens based the infamous Squeers. Having made an enemy of his uncle Ralph Nickolas was sent as an usher to Dotheboys Hall where Wackford Squeers starved and maltreated forty students under the pretense of education. "The character of Mrs. Nickleby was largely founded upon that of Dickens's mother. The title character was founded on Dickens's brother-in-law Hanry Burnett a music teacher at Manchester" Hayward The Dickens Encyclopedia p. 115.

"H.K. Browne prepared 39 illustrations for this novel as well as the cover for the monthly parts while the portrait frontispiece was engraved by Finden from a painting by Maclise. Because of the the large monthly circulation of the parts Browne etched as many as four plates in some cases of each illustration and all of them were printed in the initial issue of the parts. Many of the plates from 'Miss Nickleby introduced to her uncle's friends' page 175 onward contain Arabic or Roman numerals which indicate the order in which they were etched. Most of the numerals are located in the lower right corner and occasionally in the left. Hatton and Cleaver state that the numeral for Plate 31 'Mysterious appearance of the gentleman in the small-clothes' p. 487 appears on the front of the mantleshelf. The first state of the frontispiece and the first four illustrations contain the imprint of Chapman and Hall. The first state of the frontispiece always appears in the monthly parts; the first four illustrations were issued with and without the imprint in the parts but the plates without imprints did not appear in the earlier issues of the monthly parts and may therefore be termed 'second states''' Smith I 5.

Smith Part I 5. Dickens Charles
Charles Dickens Writes About Publishing his Work and Writing "Under New and Favorable Circumstances" in the Year of Martin Chuzzelwit's Release
Famed English Victorian novelist. 2 page Autograph Letter Signed and dated Tuesday the 26th of March 1844. Writing to The London Magazine Dickens praises the poetry of contemporary writer and magazine editor Thomas Hood as well as committing to send new work to be published in the magazine. This letter was written during the same period when Dickens was writing the final installments of Martin Chuzzlewit the novel that he would ultimately call his best work.

From Devonshire Dickens writes in his hand in full

"Dear Sir
It is quite unnecessary for me to say that I have a great respect for Thomas Hood and hold his genius in high estimation.

I cannot promise to render any but the slightest assistance with his magazine in case it should receive consequences of its late appearance this month. But if it should and if it should be within the hands of the Spottiswoodes publishing house I will certainly write something for the next number. It will necessarily be very short and will most probably refer to its starting under new and favorable circumstances. But in the case I have put I will do that much with sincere pleasure -- and would do much more if my engagements permitted."

He signs boldly " Charles Dickens."

Dickens' lengthy novels were each published as magazine serials prior to their final release in book form and this letter provides an important glimpse into how he retained these important relationships with editors while negotiating the balance between creating much-loved literary masterpieces and meeting the demands of magazine deadlines. Deeply engaged in the composition of his novel Martin Chuzzlewit which Dickens would call his best work Dickens admits to the editor his desire to submit work but his concern at missing a deadline and holding up publication of the upcoming issue. Rather than inconvenience the editor or bring about the dissatisfaction of subscribers Dickens commits to "writing something for the next issue" if the current issue is already "within the hands of the Spottiswoodes" publishing house. Given Dickens' "great respect" for the position of Thomas Hood who was both a famed writer and one of the magazine's editors he guarantees a strong piece and assures his correspondent that he is "writing under new and favorable circumstances." Such conditions could be credited to the near-completion of Martin Chuzzlewit as well as to the birth of Dickens' third son in the same year.

An important letter providing a glimpse into Dickens' publication and writing. With minor age related toning. In very good condition with bold clean signature. unknown books

DICKENS Charles
Standard
Two Issues of "The Standard" Where Dickens Gives Impression of Public Execution DICKENS Charles. The Standard. London: Charles Baldwin 1849. London: Nov. 16 1849 and Nov. 18 1849. Two issues. Measures 17 1/4 x 11 3/4 inches. Both issues discuss Dickens response and remarks to a public execution that he had witnessed known as the "Bermondsey Horror." This was first published in the London Times on Nov. 13 1849. The "Bermondsey Horror" was about a Swiss domestic servant by the name of Marie Manning who was convicted with her husband of the murder of her lover. Contains DickensÃs reactions to the dual public execution of the Mannings. A married couple accused of killing Mrs. ManningÃs young lover the Mannings were hanged in public outside Horsemonger Lane Gaol. Dickens had gone there the night before waiting overnight expressly in order to watch the hanging and note the crowdÃs reaction. Though the letter expresses strong disapproval at public spectacles such as this execution at the same time it reveals DickensÃs morbid curiosity and excitement at the event. It was here that Dickens wrote "I believe that a sight so inconceivably awful as the wickedness and levity of the immense crowd collected at that execution this morning could be imagined by no man and could be presented in no heathen land under the sun." He later based one of his charactersóMademoiselle Hortense Lady Dedlock's maid in Bleak House. Newspapers have a bit of browning to the edges as expected. Overall a very good piece of Dickens history. Eckel p. 227 HBS 67227. $750 Charles Baldwin unknown books

Dickens Charles
A Christmas Carol
London: Chapman and Hall 1843. 3rd edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Bound in publisher's original red orange cloth with blind stamped covers and front cover and spine stamped in gilt. Four hand-colored plates by John Leech and four black and white wood engravings by W. J. Linton. A Christmas Carol has had an involved publishing history much to the delight of bibliographical detectives. According to John Eckel it was publishedon December 19th 1843 and sold 6000 copies on the first day. Before the end of the year eleven days later it was in the third edition with the combined number of copies of the second and third editions being estimated at only two to three thousand copies. This means that the second and third editions were at least two to three times scarcer than the first although not as complicated with the three states and trial copies that distinguished the first edition. During the haste of the early stages of production Dickens was trying to determine exactly how he wanted the book to appear and experimented with the color of end papers with red blue green and yellow eventually settling on yellow. On the title page he experimented with red green and blue eventually settling on red and blue as his preference. There were many textual errors corrected mostly in the second edition although not entirely. Binding variants were yet another issue. This copy has the title page printed in red and blue with the words "Third Edition" printed in blue. The end papers are yellow. This copy has the heading "Stave I" which was eventually changed to "Stave One." An error on page 49 line 2 was uncorrected remaining so in the third edition. It involved "and-bye ways" the hyphen being misplaced.

Chapman and Hall hardcover books
