‎London: Richard Bentley 1838. The Most Celebrated of English Clowns"
Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi Superbly Bound by Bayntun ca. 1920
Four Magnificent Color Pictorial Inlaid Characters
Handsomely Extra-Illustrated

DICKENS Charles. BAYNTUN binder. Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi. Edited by "Boz." With Illustrations by George Cruikshank. In Two Volumes. Vol. I. II. London: Richard Bentley 1838.

First edition first issue with no border around final plate and correct page listing in list of "Embellishments."

Two octavo volumes 7 1/2 x 4 5/8 inches; 191 x 117 mm. i-xix xx blank 288 pp; i-ix x blank 263 264 printers imprint. Engraved frontispiece portrait in volume I and twelve engraved plates by George Cruikshank.
The frontispiece to each volume hand-colored volume I. "Joseph Grimaldi" & Volume II. "Grimaldi's kindness to the Giant".

Extra illustrated by the insertion of forty-eight engraved plates eighteen of which are hand colored. Six of the hand colored plates are by F.W. Pailthorpe; six by Isaac Cruikshank and two by George Cruikshank. All three of these artists are famous Dickens illustrators.

Bound ca. 1920 by Bayntun stamp-signed in gilt "Bayntun. Binder. Bath. Eng." on rear silk endleaves. Full forest green crushed levant morocco covers triple-ruled in gilt surrounding a thin inlaid border of black morocco. Spines with five raised bands decoratively bordered in black and gilt in compartments gilt lettering gilt board edges and decorative gilt turn-ins. Front and back doublures of each volume with a superb figure and background inlaid in various colored morocco's. Green watered silk endleaves all edges gilt. Spines very slightly darkened otherwise very fine. Housed in the original fleece-lined green cloth slipcase. A spectacular example of a pair of early Bayntun bindings typical of the firm's first-rate work and use of the best materials.

The four inlaid designs include "Gaby Grin The Eccentric Clown." and three other characters from the book.

Joseph Grimaldi 1779-1837 called by Britannica "the most celebrated of English clowns" and generally considered without equal as a clown of pantomime. Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi is the autobiography of the nineteenth-century clown Joseph Grimaldi. There has been much debate about the exact nature of Dickens' role in the writing of this book. Forster said that Dickens wrote only the introductory chapter; others have said that he edited the manuscript with the help of his father; and Bentley has stated in print that Dickens wrote a significant portion of the work. Eckel says "It is plain that the last chapter is in Dickens' style and that other parts of the book are his. Grimaldi laid the foundation for his memoirs but in a rough and diffuse manner. He gave the manuscript to Thomas Egerton Wilks who after some condensing sold the manuscript to Bentley who in turn passed it to Dickens for the purpose of embroidery." According to Kitton copies with the frame around the final plate as here are more valuable than others because of their relative scarcity; the border was added without Dickens' consent and when he expressed his displeasure it was quickly removed.

Bayntun of Bath. George Bayntun 1873-1940 served his apprenticeship with the Taylor family in Trim Street and started his own bookbinding business in Northumberland Place in 1894. He employed London binders to raise the standard of craftsmanship and soon moved into a larger workshop in Walcot Street. Book Auction Records for 1906 recognized his success: "He has brought intelligence into play as well as high craftsmanship". In 1920 he purchased the bindery business of George Gregory and in 1939 the Bayntun and Rivière binderies were incorporated into a new set of premises on Manvers Street Bath from where the business still operates today. George Bayntun had an especially good relationship with many of the pre-eminent American dealers including Brentano's.

Gimbel B64. Eckel pp. 140-2. ‎Oliver Twist‎

‎London: Richard Bentley 1838. Charles Dickens Unromantic Portrayal of Criminals and Their Sordid Lives

DICKENS Charles. Oliver Twist. By Charles Dickens. Author of "The Pickwick Papers" In Three Volumes. Vol. I. II. III. London: Richard Bentley 1838.

First edition of Dickens' second novel. The "Charles Dickens" issue with the title-page authorship credit to Charles Dickens instead of "Boz" and with the "Church" version of the final plate. First state of volume III with "pilaster" instead of "pier" or "pedestal" on page 164. Almost all the internal flaws according to Smith present.

Three octavo volumes 7 15/16 x 4 7/8 inches; 202 x 124 mm. Volumes I and III in twelves volume II in eights. iv 12-331 1 blank 4 advertisements; iv 12-307 1 blank; iv 12-315 1 blank pp. No half-title called for in Volume III. Twenty-four engraved plates by George Cruikshank. Small piece 3/4 x 3/8 inch torn away from upper corner of second plate in volume II repaired tear to top margin of following pages 61/62; E7.

Original Smith primary binding; Carter binding variant B reddish brown fine-diaper cloth front and back covers stamped in blind with an arabesque design spines ruled in blind and lettered in gilt original pale yellow coated endpapers. Some light foxing to plates as usual some light occasional marginal soiling. Spine ends and inner hinges of volume three expertly and almost invisibly repaired spines very slightly faded but gilt still bright. Armorial bookplate of Adrian Hoffman Joline on front paste-downs bookplate for volume two removed. Housed in a quarter brown morocco clamshell case. An excellent and very attractive set.

For this novel Dickens's first in the standard three-volume form Bentley divided the printing task between two firms: Volume I was printed in a twelvemo format by Samuel Bentley; Volume II in octavo format by Whiting; and Volume III preliminaries and signatures A-F and probably G by Whiting with the remaining text by Samuel Bentley again in twelvemo format. The three-decker publication date was 9 November 1839 and within a week at Dickens's insistence the title-pages were changed to include his name and the "Church" version of the final plate was substituted for the "Fireside" version.

Smith I 4.

Oliver Twist is the second novel by Charles Dickens and was first published as a serial 1837-39. The story is of the orphan Oliver Twist who starts his life in a workhouse and is then sold into apprenticeship with an undertaker. He escapes from there and travels to London where he meets the Artful Dodger a member of a gang of juvenile pickpockets led by the elderly criminal Fagin.

Oliver Twist is notable for its unromantic portrayal by Dickens of criminals and their sordid lives as well as for exposing the cruel treatment of the many orphans in London in the mid-19th century.

"My dear child' said the old gentleman moved by the warmth of Oliver's sudden appeal 'you need not be afraid of my deserting you unless you give me cause.' I never never will sir' interposed Oliver."

In this early example of the social novel Dickens satirizes the hypocrisies of his time including child labor the recruitment of children as criminals and the presence of street children. The novel may have been inspired by the story A Memoir of of Robert Blincoe 1832 an orphan whose account of working as a child laborer in a cotton mill was widely read in the 1830s. It is likely that Dickens's own youthful experiences contributed as well.

Oliver Twist has been the subject of numerous adaptations for various media including a highly successful musical play Oliver! and the multiple Academy Award-winning 1968 motion picture which featured Mark Lester as Oliver Jack Wild as the Artful Dodger Ron Moody as Fagin and Oliver Reed as Bill Sykes. ‎Autograph Letter Signed to composer "Mr. Francesco Berger.‎

‎1855. Two pages 1st and 3rd of conjoined leaves on stationery with a faint blind-stamp at the upper corner. "Tavistock House Wednesday Tenth January 1855."

The text of Dickens's letter following "Dear Sir" is: I hope the opportunity you deserve will present itself naturally before very long. I cannot make an express appointment just now as I am quite uncertain whether I may be called out of town tomorrow or next day with Charles or on the business of placing him in some house of commerce. Besides which I have the Christmas holidays being over a fortnight's arrear of appointments to clear off. Your letter required no apology and is very agreeably done. Faithfully yours signed Charles Dickens. Francesco Berger 1834-1933 born in London of Italian and German parentage as a teen in 1848 traveled to Trieste his father's home city returning to England in 1855. He was trained as a pianist and composer and would go on to be a professor at the Royal Academy of Music and the 27-year Secretary of the Philharmonic Society. But look at the year he returned to England: 1855! -- the year of this letter January 10th. Although Berger would become a great friend of Charles Dickens and a frequent visitor at Tavistock House we believe that this letter might be Dickens's first to him with its formal "Dear Sir". Upon arriving in England Berger probably sent out "feelers" for musical commissions and this letter appears to be Dickens's polite declination. But this declination appears to have been temporary: look at what happened later in 1855 according to Berger's 1913 REMINISCENCES IMPRESSIONS & ANECDOTES: Everybody knows that Dickens was a fine Actor and that at one time he very nearly "took to the stage" as a vocation. He had "private theatricals" each Christmas-time in which he himself his family and intimate friends acted. In this circle he was spoken of as "the Manager" and his eldest son was known as "young Charles." In 1855 Wilkie Collins wrote a Play for one of these occasions called "The Lighthouse" and Dickens asked me to compose for it an original Overture and arrange the Incidental Music which I gladly undertook to do. For these performances Dickens had a theatre specially constructed in the rear of his house with proper footlights proper scenery proper curtain -- in fact no expense or trouble was spared to make the whole thing complete. I had a small but efficient Orchestra to conduct and presided at a Piano. The scenery was painted by Clarkson Stanfield R.A. The actors were Dickens Wilkie Collins Mark Lemon Augustus Egg Edward Hogarth Miss Hogarth and Mamie Dickens Dickens' elder daughter. There is indeed a famous photograph of about 25 members of the cast and crew either of "The Lighthouse" or of the next Dickens-Collins-Berger collaboration "The Frozen Deep" in 1857 showing all of the above-mentioned people including Berger but also including "young Charles" and his sister Kate who was married to Collins's brother -- with the elder Dickens lounging in the foreground. The letter is in fine condition blue ink slightly faded as is often the case. Provenance: from the renowned three-generation Dodge Family Autograph Collection. unknown books‎

‎PICTURES FROM ITALY‎

‎1846. New-York: Wiley & Putnam 1846. Original blind-stamped red cloth.

First Complete American Edition issued as No. LXIII in Wiley & Putnam's "Library of Choice Reading" -- available either in wrappers on its own or bound in red cloth together with Mrs. Jameson's MEMOIRS AND ESSAYS as here. During 1846 seven letters from Dickens in Italy were published in The Daily News in London and in America Wiley & Putnam jumped on them and published them in two wrappered parts titled TRAVELLING LETTERS WRITTEN ON THE ROAD -- the only such book edition on either side of the Atlantic and extremely scarce today. Later that year Dickens polished up the letters and added considerably to their number creating the U.K. volume PICTURES FROM ITALY published on May 18th; Wiley & Putnam quickly issued this corresponding American edition on June 8th followed "a day or two" Smith later by William Colyer's edition. Condition of this copy is very good: the original endpapers are intact but there is some wear along the outer joints though the book is tight. Smith pp 77-80 including photographs of this copy; Podeschi Yale A100 listing only a copy in wrappers; Carr Texas B495 likewise; Wilkins p. 28. Provenance: the front paste-down bears a college bookplate and a number is stamped onto the copyright page; the front free endpaper bears the penciled signature of Dickens bibliographer Walter Smith. unknown books‎

‎SKETCHES OF YOUNG GENTLEMEN‎

‎1838. Dedicated to Young Ladies. Philadelphia: Carey Lea and Blanchard 1838. Original dark green cloth with front cover label.

First American Edition. Dickens wrote this as a protest against SKETCHES OF YOUNG LADIES pseudonymously written by "Quiz" subsequently attributed to Rev. Edward Caswall the year before. That volume classified these "interesting members of the animal kingdom" in such groups as "Lazy Young Lady" "Stupid Young Lady" "Petting Young Lady" and "Manly Young Lady." To quote from Dickens's "Dedication to the Young Ladies": Your Dedicator is humbly of opinion that so many libels upon your Honourable sex were never contained in any previously published work. Although your Dedicator is not at present prepared to deny that you are animals still he humbly submits that it is not polite to call you so. Your Dedicator humbly suggests that such of your Honourable sex as purchased the bane should possess themselves of the antidote and that those of your Honourable sex who were not rash enough to take the first should lose no time in swallowing the last -- prevention being in all cases better than cure. This Philadelphia volume contains first Caswall's LADIES by "Quiz" and then Dickens's GENTLEMEN anonymous -- no "Boz" each with its own title page dated 1838 and reading "from the last London edition." The front cover label does attribute the second piece -- to "Quiz Junior"; the half-title at the beginning of the volume reads "Sketches of Young Ladies" and then in a different i.e. added font "and Young Gentlemen." This is a very good copy of this delicate volume still in its original two-in-one binding with front cover label. There is a damp-mark "tide-line" about a quarter-inch up on all leaves in the margin only and on the blank dark green cloth spine is faintly inked the title. This is a scarce book in original state. Smith pp 1-4 wherein he notes that this edition was published in mid-March 1838 and Wiley & Putnam's on June 15th; no American edition is cited for Yale in Podeschi see B63; not cited for Univ. of Texas in Carr but see the Wiley & Putnam edition at B473; not cited in Wilkins. Provenance: signed in pencil by bibliographer Walter Smith this is the copy described and photographed in his 2019 book. unknown books‎
