‎London: Published by B. Pollock 73 Hoxton Street Hoxton n. d. 1st printing thus. Cf. Gimbel C35; Suzanette Catalogue E.35 showing this illustration; Suzanette TREASURES 30 also showing this image; VanderPoel B1091 all for the entire publication. Now housed in an archival mylar sleeve. Age-toning to paper. Small loss at two right corners. Very Good. Single sheet printed recto only. Wood engraved printing with 7 characters from Dickens' novel. Oriented horizontally: 6-5/8" x 8-1/4"

Item appears to be a leaftet-type advertiser for Pollock's work initially published by Redington and ostensibly the only juvenile dramatization of Dickens' work cf. Suzanette TREASURES. Estimated date of publication varies from authority to authority. VanderPoel gives c. 1839; Gimbel 1860 and the copy auctioned by Christies for the Self sale was described as "Post - 1876". We subscribe to this last as Redington's theatrical publishing firm was taken over by Benjamin Pollock in 1876 after Pollock married Redington's daughter. Pollock reissued many of Redington's plays with his own imprint as did many of the publishers until his death in 1937. Cf. Speaight G. History of the English Toy Theatre 1969 ed. p. 149 191-192. ‎Dealings with the Firm Dombey and Son Wholesale Retail and Exportation‎

‎London: Bradbury & Evans 1848 Illustrated by Hablot Knight Browne "Phiz". First edition. Original publisher's green cloth covers and spine decorated in blind spine lettered in gilt. Wear and rubbing to the extremities upper spine frayed with some loss to corner splitting along spine joints hinges slightly cracked and secure plates toned with some scattered foxing pages generally bright and clean. A very good completely unrestored copy free of repairs. Smith I 8. Dombey and Son is a novel about the wealthy Dombey family who owns the titular shipping company Dombey and Son. The text follows Paul Dombey Sr. who has high hopes for his sickly son Paul as a future business partner and neglects his healthy daughter Florence. Throughout the text Dickens explores the relationship between one's personal and professional lives as well as the relationship between parent and child. Considered the text that solidified his reputation as a renowned author Dombey and Son is regarded as Dickens' first artistically mature work with carefully plotted serial installments and a preplanned outline for the entire work. Dickens wrote this book in various locations including Switzerland England and France. Dombey and Son contains 40 illustrations by Browne published and signed under the pseudonym Phiz including two plates that were etched as well as drawn by the illustrator. Dombey and Son also marked a successful experiment in new illustration techniques; it contains the first published example of a "dark plate" appropriately titled "On the Dark Road" page 547 "which was created by a machine process that tinted the etched plate and heightened its black-and-white contrast." Additionally Dombey and Son is the first example of Browne's horizontal illustrations for Dickens' novels. He would continue to use both of these techniques in Dickens' next novel David Copperfield. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. Illus. by Hablot Knight Browne "Phiz". ‎The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby‎

‎London: Chapman & Hall 1839 First edition. Illustrations by Hablot K. Browne "Phiz". Finely bound in 19th century full polished green calf spine lettered and decorated in gilt gilt turn-ins all edges gilt marbled endpapers. An excellent copy extremities lightly rubbed with the usual foxing and some staining to the plates text otherwise very clean and bright. A very attractive copy. Nicholas Nickleby is Dickens's third novel which he began writing while Oliver Twist was still in progress. Characteristic of Dickens's work Nicholas Nickleby is a whirlwind of social satire with a complex network of characters and plotlines. The book highlights the controversy that surrounded Yorkshire boarding schools in the 1830s as news stories brought to light the abuse and neglect that was common among these institutions known for accepting unwanted children from parents who paid high prices to send them anywhere they could. Dickens's villain Wackford Squeers was based on Walter Shaw the real-life headmaster of Bowes Academy one of the schools reported for allowing rampant abuse of its pupils. The book has since been adapted for theater television and film and remains one of Dickens's most well-known works. This first edition in book form was bound from the publisher's parts with the stab holes from the original wrappers present and all the points called for by Smith meaning that it is one of the earlier issues of the first edition. Furthermore this copy was bound from the earliest states of the publisher's parts for as Hatton and Cleaver note "There are two distinguishing features only which point out early printings from later issues:" the substitution of "visiter" for "sister" on page 123 and "latter" instead of "letter" on page 160; both of these errors were corrected while Nicholas Nickleby was issued in parts causing Smith to cite these points as "in some copies." This copy has both "visiter" and "latter" deeming it a scarce first edition bound from the first state of the publisher's parts. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine. ‎The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club‎

‎London: Chapman & Hall 1837 Illustrations by Robert Seymour Robert William Buss and Hablot Knight Browne. First edition first printing three of the first issue points called for by Smith: "S. Veller" uncorrected on p. 342 "this friends" on p. 400 and "OF" imperfect on heading of p. 432. Contemporary full red polished calf with five raised bands and two spine labels in dark green spines lettered and beautifully decorated in gilt all edges gilt blue and red marbled endpapers. A beautiful copy with only some light scattered foxing and the usual toning to the plates early former ownership signature to second blank. An excellent and extremely bright copy in a fine binding. Smith I 3. The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club was originally published serially in twenty numbers bound in nineteen monthly installments from April 1836 - November 1837. This first edition was published shortly after on November 17 1837. The project was originally conceived by illustrator Robert Seymour who envisioned a series of humorous stories about the adventures of amateur Cockney sportsmen. Chapman and Hall employed Dickens to create a cohesive narrative that provided a background story for the illustrations. However the bold young writer purportedly wrote with little regard to the illustrations even making suggestions for their alterations at times much to Seymour's displeasure. After the second installment was completed Seymour committed suicide and was replaced in the Pickwick project by Robert Buss. However Dickens found Buss' work unfavorable and Hablot Knight Browne "Phiz" who would continue to illustrate many of Dickens' subsequent novels took over as the Pickwick illustrator. Smith comments on the complicated history of Pickwick's illustration: "The history of the creation of the plates is perhaps as complex as that of the printing of the text and different states of a plate and different plates for the same subject may vary from one bound copy to another…seldom in fact are all of the plates located in copies in the original cloth or rebound ones" which he partially attributes to the lack of a list of illustrations. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine. London: Chapman & Hall hardcover books‎

‎Grosset & Dunlap 1912. Reissue. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. Light stain to top margin corner does not affect text light spot on spine head. 1912 Hard Cover. We have more books available by this author!. xv 1 432 pp. 8vo. Green cloth gilt image of Dickens on front board black titles. Illustrated with photographs from The Liebler Company's Centenary Celebration production of J. Comyn Carr's Adaptation of the Novel first acted by a special cast at the New Amsterdam Theatre New York City February 26 1912. "Oliver Twist subtitled The Parish Boy's Progress is the second novel by English author Charles Dickens published by Richard Bentley in 1838. The story is about an orphan Oliver Twist who endures a miserable existence in a workhouse and then is placed with an undertaker. He escapes and travels to London where he meets the Artful Dodger leader of a gang of juvenile pickpockets. Naively unaware of their unlawful activities Oliver is led to the lair of their elderly criminal trainer Fagin. Oliver Twist is notable for Dickens' unromantic portrayal of criminals and their sordid lives.1 The book exposed the cruel treatment of many a waif-child in London which increased international concern in what is sometimes known as "The Great London Waif Crisis": the large number of orphans in London in the Dickens era. The book's subtitle The Parish Boy's Progress alludes to Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress and also to a pair of popular 18th-century caricature series by William Hogarth A Rake's Progress and A Harlot's Progress.2 An early example of the social novel the book calls the public's attention to various contemporary evils including child labour the recruitment of children as criminals and the presence of street children. Dickens mocks the hypocrisies of his time by surrounding the novel's serious themes with sarcasm and dark humour. The novel may have been inspired by the story of Robert Blincoe an orphan whose account of hardships as a child labourer in a cotton mill was widely read in the 1830s. It is likely that Dickens's own early youth as a child labourer contributed to the story's development.3 Oliver Twist has been the subject of numerous film and television adaptations and is the basis for a highly successful musical play and the multiple Academy Award winning 1968 motion picture made from it. ‎Sketches by Boz‎

‎London: Chapman and Hall 1839 New edition. Illustrated with 40 engraved plates by George Cruikshank. Finely bound in contemporary three-quarter dark green calf marbled boards and page edges spine titled and elaborately stamped in gilt. Very good with wear and rubbing to spine ends edges and boards frontispiece with repaired tear some foxing to frontis and plates. Overall a very attractive bright and very clean copy. This collection of fiction first published as a series of short pieces in The Monthly Magazine and other periodicals was re-issued in book form in 1836 and stands as Dickens's first foray into authorship. The pieces were penned under Dickens's pseudonym "Boz" and offer insight into his observations of the streets of Victorian London and its inhabitants. The humorous and unforgiving social critique includes chapters such as "Thoughts about People" a grim take on the life of a working man in London as one that "cannot be said to be forgotten when he dies for no one remembered him when he was alive" and "The Broker's Man" a long lament by a character called Mr. Bung on the trials he faces working for a broker. The original two-volume set and its later-published third volume were illustrated by notable political cartoonist and illustrator of the time George Cruikshank who worked closely with Dickens to portray each character and scene exactly as he envisioned them. Sketches marked the beginning of many of Dickens's professional relationships which ultimately led to his rise to the prominence he holds today. Hard Cover. Very Good. Illus. by Cruikshank George.
