‎Chapman and Hall London 1861. 5th or later Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. First Edition fifth issue. Three volumes including the publisher's catalog dated August 1861 at the rear of Volume III. Bound in the publisher's original ribbed purple cloth binding with ruling and decorations in blind to boards lettering and decorations in gilt to spine. This copy has the majority of the first issue points with only a few of the corrections that were made after the first issue. Overall a clean and attractive set extremely rare in the unsophisticated publisher's cloth. The first issue of the first edition book published on July 6 1861 was followed by four subsequent issues of the same edition published on August 5 August 17 September 21 and October 30 of the same year. Smith notes that "These first five issues were probably printed at a single impression and published with altered title pages to imply and encourage a rapid sale In all five issues the same misprints persist." The first issue which included a print run of 1000 copies was "almost entirely taken up by the libraries" leaving only a few hundred copies for private ownership. Overall a beautiful unrestored uniform set. Housed in a custom-made collector's slipcase. Chapman and Hall, London hardcover books‎

‎The Mystery of Edwin Drood‎

‎London: Chapman & Hall 1870. April 1870 - September 1870. 1870 First edition in the original six monthly parts. Original publishers blue-green pictorial wrappers with illustrations by C.A. Collins with thirteen of the fourteen plates including engraved portrait of Dickens and vignette title by Samuel Luke Fildes. Part 6 in earliest state with "Price Eighteenpence" pasted over the printed "Price One Shilling" later states are printed with the corrected price; Part 5 "Jasper's Sacrifices" plate hand-colored spine separated at page 129 with only the first of three advertisements at rear; Part 4 complete with "Edwin Drood Advertiser" to front and all three ads to rear; Part 3 with all five advertisements at rear and thus quite rare; Part 2 with the scarce Gaimes Sanders & Nicol ad on cork as well as the other back advertisement and the rear wrapper; Part 1 complete with "Edwin Drood Advertiser" insert at front. A good set with significant wear soiling and some loss but a completely unrestored example of Dickens' last published work free of the usual repairs. Housed in a custom box with a folding chemise. Hatton & Cleaver pp. 373-384. Originally published serially in the six monthly installments The Mystery of Edwin Drood was also published in book form on August 31 1870. Both the later serial installments and the first book form edition were published posthumously after Dickens' death in June 1870 leaving the novel unfinished. The story is named after the titular character Edwin Drood although the text largely focuses on his uncle John Jasper an opium addict and choir master who is romantically interested in his nephew's fiancé. In the story Drood disappears under mysterious circumstances and due to Dicken's premature death at 58 the mystery is never resolved. Accordingly many of the novel's fans speculate as to whether or not Drood is dead and if so who killed him. Many authors have attempted to resolve the plot including Dickens' son Charley in 1873 and Thomas James a Vermont-based printer and con artist who claimed to have channeled the deceased Dickens and learned his intended ending for the novel. . First Edition. Original Wraps. Good. London: Chapman & Hall, 1870. April, 1870 - September, 1870. paperback books‎

‎Bentley's Miscellany With First Appearance of "Oliver Twist" in Magazine Form DICKENS Charles. Bentley's Miscellany. Contributions: by "Boz". London: Richard Bentley 1837-39. First edition of this compilation and the first magazine appearance of Oliver Twist with all of the plates many oxidized. Five octavo volumes. Measures 220 x 137 mm. Early brown cloth blindstamped on covers and gilt-stamped on spines. All edges gilt. Spines stained with what looks like to be a sticker remnants that turned black. Otherwise a very good set of this scarce compilation. "Preface. There is much in Bentley's Miscellany that is good. The "Contributions by Boz" presented here "Oliver Twist" "Jack Sheppard" "Guy Fawkes" "Ingoldsby Legends" "Nights at Sea" and other stories Illustrated by George Cruikshank and John Leech are undoubtedly the best. To collect such into separate books direct from the Miscellany appeared to me desirable inasmuch as in any other form they are but re-issues of these now famous combinations of literature and art. ‎DICKENS CHARLES & RICHARD HENRY DANA JR‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed from Richard Henry Dana Jr. Giving the Ecstatic Response of America to the Visit of Charles Dickens‎

‎Boston: 3 1/4 pages 9 3/4 by 7 3/4 inches January 31 1842. Original Autograph Letter Signed “Richd. H. Dana Jr.†written to Dana’s English publisher Edward Moxon describing the amazingly warm response of Americans to Charles Dickens visiting Boston. An absorbing letter showing Dana’s wonderful narrative abilities of which more than half is devoted to Dana’s account of Dickens’s stay in Boston during the English author’s celebrated first trip to America in 1842. Moxon was the British publisher of Dana’s Two Years Before the Mast and the recently issued The Seaman’s Friend. “. We have Dickens here with us & the whole town is crazy the author and his wife arrived in Boston from England on 22 January. I doubt if a literary man ever made such a ‘progress’ through a country as he is making through ours. Indeed I am certain it will be an era in literary history . From the moment the steamer was sighted up to this hour. The whole community has been in a high fever . he is obliged to refuse all visitors except at certain hours & then he holds a regular levee. The other day when he went to sit for his portrait on coming out he found the ante room staircase etc. lined with people young & old. One old lady asked him to stand still & let the ladies form a ring round so that all could see him. This was too much for his risibles & he laughed out & told her eager ladyship that he was sorry etc. but was in a hurry — & was going off; when the ladies called out to the artist ‘Do Mr. A. stop him! Don’t let him go!’ In the meanwhile the standard men of literature & wealth are paying him every attention & like him exceedingly . I have met him several times & like him very much. How full of life he is! . He told me much in the way of answering questions about yourself ‘ our friend’ as you call him Capt. Ives & others of whom I was curious to inquire . Dickens has told us many anecdotes of Charles Lamb some of which are not yet published & which interested us very much. You don’t know what a feeling there is here about Lamb .†Boston’s adulatory reception of the English writer reached its climax the next day 1 February with a great banquet held in his honor which Dana also attended. Dickens’s visit to the United States he returned to England in June resulted in his American Notes for General Circulation 1842. Written in brown ink on a bifolium of gray paper with small embossed stamp of T. Groom Boston; address panel postmark and remnants of red sealing wax. A rare view of Dickens in America through the eyes of a significant American writer. 3 1/4 pages (9 3/4 by 7 3/4 inches unknown books‎
