Engraved frontis illustration in each volume. Published by four publishers primarily Hurd & Houghton or Sheldon & Co. but also W.A. Townsend and James G. Gregory during the last nine years of Dickens' life with title page dates ranging from 1861 - 1871; small 8vos 17.5cm x 11.5cm. All bindings are tight sturdy and sound; text and illustrations very good throughout all volumes; all have some amount of wear at spine ends and corners rubbing to banded spines; gilt titles on spines remain bright and bold; several volumes have a prior owner's bookplate or the remnants of a bookplate fixed to front paste-down. It covered politics domestic and foreign news and included fiction essays humor and illustrations. The weekly is famous as the home of the father of the modern American political carton Thomas Nast who drew for Harper's 1859-1860 and from 1862 to 1886. By 1860 the Weekly's circulation had reached 100000. In an effort to maintain readership in the South Harper's took a moderate stance on slavery. In the presidential election of 1860 Harper's supported the Democratic nominee Stephen Douglas over Republican nominee Abraham Lincoln. After the Civil War began the Weekly firmly supported Lincoln and the North. During the war circulation reached 200000. This single-volume edition ultimately part of a 21-volume set of Dickens’s works was the last one over which Dickens potentially had editorial control. It was the most popular and widely circulated of all the editions issued during the novelist’s lifetime and the one on which most modern editions are based. Advertisements claimed that this was a special printing devised by Dickens and his publishers ‘to combine legibility with durability and cheapness’. Light foxing to endpapers title half title and front edge. The novels appeared at the rate of one a month from May 1867 until the series was complete. Red linen boards with light uneven soil and small stain at bottom of front board. Signed binding "Birdsall and Son Northampton" with binder's stamp on inside of front endpaper. Endpapers and edges are marbled. Leather title and author labels: "Dickens Works" "Our Mutual Friend; Nicholas Nickleby. This is not numbered as part of a set. Light foxing to endpapers. Printer's notation on last page: "Printed by Virtue and Co Limited City Road London". Frederick Barnard was a Victorian English illustrator caricaturist and genre painter. He is noted for his work on 9 of the novels of Charles Dickens published between 1871 and 1879 by Chapman and Hall for the Household edition. James Mahoney 1810-79 worked as a graphic artist in his native Ireland until 1859 when he moved to London where freelanced as a book- and magazine-illustrator. He had been well-known to British readers for his telling images of the Irish Famine 1841-46 published in The Illustrated London News and based on on-the-ground sketches. But he is best remembered as part of the team that illustrated the popular Household Edition of Dickens' works for Chapman Hall in the 1870's. Chapman and Hall hardcover
