Internally some occasional foxing but overall clean pp. 234-36 roughly opened with loss to margin not affecting text bright and crisp. Contemporary Hungarian ownership inscription on front free endpaper. 8vo 21 x 13.6 cm. xvi 2 624 pages. Half-title 8-line errata leaf. Engraved frontispiece title and 38 plates including the first example of a 'dark plate' and the first use of horizontal plates by Hablot K. Browne with tissue guards preserved. Bound from the parts with stab-holes visible at gutter in contemporary cloth: bluish-green cloth the covers with wide gilt panel smooth spine gilt-decorated and -titled pale yellow endpapers all edges gilt. FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM IN AN APPARENTLY BESPOKE CONTEMPORARY CLOTH BINDING. The present binding is not mentioned by Smith: the two variants he describes are both decorated in blind not with the richly-gilt panels found on the present copy. With the following issue points: frontispiece with hook on Captain Cuttle's left arm "bird's-eye" not hyphenated on p. 61 p. xv with no page number for frontispiece and vignette and with all of the errors detailed by Smith as earliest issue except for those on pp. 220 336 and 431. A handsome VG copy. 15 1 blank pp. Binder's blanks at rear of volume. 8vo. 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" <br/><br/>The notorious quarrel between two of England's most popular authors began with Yates' critical review in Town Talk of Thackeray's English Humourists of the Eighteenth Century. Thackeray as might be expected was a bit affronted at what he viewed as a slanderous insult by this fellow member of the Garrick Club; believing much of Yates' information came from club meetings he took his grievance to the club committee. The committee sided with Thackeray and instructed Yates to apologize; Yates refused & was forcibly barred from club premises subsequently bringing charges against the club Secretary. Dickens absent from London as this brouhaha was brewing returned to find all in full force. He offered to mediate though primarily siding with Yates which Thackeray viewed as treachery. The ill feelings between the two did not abate for years until shortly before Thackeray's death in 1863. Herein Yates recounts the history & evidence of the disagreement with not unexpectedly a bias to his own case. This copy presented to Edward Bradley presumed to be the Victorian novelist who wrote under the pen name Cuthbert M. Bede. Known in Wise facsimiles cf Todd 425c the first edition as here just twice at auction in the last 30 years the last being 1977. Small 8vo illustrated with 8 plates after the originals by John Leech a hand-colored frontispiece three There is a hand colored frontispiece of Mr. Fezziwig's ball three colored plates that are lithographed by P. S. Duval and four black-and-white original brown cloth decorated and lettered in blind and gilt on the front cover and spine and in blind only on rear cover by J. C. Russell Binder. First American edition of Dickens' most popular work. replicating the first English edition the American edition was printed by "C. Sherman printer" as noted on the verso of the title-page. Carey & Hart's American publication was a piracy published in blatant disregard to Dickens' impassioned plea for international copyright protection during his tour of America in 1843. The present copy is in the rare gift binding stamped on the front cover with the binder's name unlike in the ordinary bindings. This is a handsome set bound in a contemporary 3/4 calf over marbled paper covered boards beautifully rebacked red and black spine labels gilt compartments decoratively stamped in gilt endpapers re-newed. A clean bright set without the usual scattered foxing with the exception of volume I p. 72-73 has a bit of off-setting to upper margins from something laid in at one time. Very nice. "Martin Chuzzlewit is a rich old man who has hired a nurse to take care of him named Mary. Meanwhile Martin's grandson also named Martin falls in love with Mary and wants to marry her. Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi
London: Richard Bentley 1838. First Edition. Octavo. First issue with the last plate without a border edited by Boz. In two volumes 288 and 263pp. illustrated by George Cruikshank. Grimaldi a famous performing clown left his memoir in manuscript to his executer who attempted to have it published. The publisher bought the memoir edited by the executer but it needed too much work to be saleable. Dickens received from his publisher the opportunity to publish this work. Dickens signed an agreement and reworked the memoir adding his own flair. Dickens never had the opportunity to consult the manuscript as the executer sold it. Bound in contemporary 3/4 polished calf over marbled paper covered boards raised bands with compartments decorated in gilt dark brown and green morocco spine labels gilt all edge marbled with matching endpapers occasional spots of foxing to plates.
