Original spines EACH with 4 raised bands obliquely diced; 3 ornate gold panels plus one panel with " DICKENS' WORKS" on burgundy skivers of which 2 are slightly chipped plus one panel with gold embossed books' titles directly onto spines. Titles are all easily legible and mostly bright with v occasional letter rubbed. Marbled end-papers. 525pp. All works bar one have a frontis plus 7 woodcut plates. Vols containing 2 works therefore have 16 illustrations. All illustrations complete no tissue guards. Most volumes have brown water staining to top & fore margins extending some way into the text all pages browned and starting to be brittle but only a little dirt foxing. No water damage 292pp. The set looks very fine on the shelf. This is the "Charles Dickens Edition" apparently because it is the only edition he edited before he died in June 1870. None of the volumes has a printing date but "American Notes" has a Postscript dated May 1868 therefore 1867-8. The complete major novels set is 16 vols. The missing novels are Oliver Twist Little Dorritt & Great Expectations: Edwin Drood was only half finished when C D died. To compensate for this there are 4 Shorter Works. How many vols were in this set is unknown but this appears to be the most complete set of the very early Charles Dickens Edition on offer anywhere. Please expect extra postage. Charles Dickens Edn.
