Scrapbook Broadway/Theatre/Dance
1920's Broadway Theatre and Dance Scrapbook - Thelma Carlton
Hardcover. Good. Unusual 1920s -30s SCRAPBOOK devoted to Thelma Carlton an actor and dancer who amongst other things executed one helluva hula. Fourteen black leaves 20 cm x 14 cm tied with ribbon -- a bit chipped along the edges covers absent last page coming loose. Each page is covered recto and verso with newspaper clippings images and ads devoted to Thelma Carlton. Many items are underlined to emphasize the parts specific to Carlton and there is a small photograph of her name in lights over the Club Orlando which leads one to wonder if the scrapbook belonged to a loved one of Carlton's Carlton herself or a really devoted fan. Carlton got her start with a traveling Shakespeare company and within a decade became a star of burlesque and a featured dancer at the Palais Royal in New York as well as other hits both on an off Broadway -- including "Frivolities" 44th Street Theater 1920 Nora Bayes' "Her Family Tree" Schubert Theater 1921 and "Artists and Models" Winter Garden Theater 1925. The reviews collected here invariably remark on her skill versatility and loveliness -- and few can refrain from commenting on her "ravishing" hula and other exotic numbers. While the scrapbook was not created by the tidiest of hands as the crooked cuts and occasional splotches of glue will attest it's a compelling tribute with wonderful images of costumes of the era.

hardcover books

[The Living Theatre] Judith Malina, Julian Beck (creators)
Seven Meditations on Political Sadomasochism Sette Meditazioni Sul Sadomachismo Politico Original poster for an Italian performance of the 1974 performance art piece
Rome: Comune di Roma 1979. Vintage poster for an Italian staging of the 1974 groundbreaking American experimental theatre production. Staged in Rome at the Teatro Alberico circa 1979.

Founded in 1947 in New York by Julian Beck and Judith Malina The Living Theatre is the oldest active experimental theater group in the United States. In the fifties and sixties the company became an epicenter for revolutionary culture performing both original and repertory works.

"Seven Meditations" was largely written in response to the imprisonment of several members of the company under the Medici dictatorship in Brazil in 1971 drawing on their experiences of suppression and torture in the Brazilian prison system. The show addressed seven different types of actions relationships or statements governed by power including sexuality capitalism private property and law enforcement and attempted to begin a dialogue with audience members regarding ways to move forward from these dynamics.

As with many of the group's performances "Seven Meditations" proved controversial and even courted obscenity charges largely due to a section of the show depicting a simulated torture scene-as shown in the poster on offer.

39 x 55 inches. Rolled. Very Good plus. Comune di Roma unknown

WORLD WAR II - PACIFIC THEATRE
American photograph album showing the war against Japan.
Manila: 1940s. A graphic album showing fighting in the Philippines the Marshall Islands Papua New Guinea Guam the Solomon Islands and Palau. The compiler chose to include violent images displaying the brutality of the campaign. The album opens with portrait shots of individual Marines or groups along with photographs of American encampments and ships. The scenes then turn more distressing with images of dead locals including children lying on the beach or next to tanks. The photographs were taken across the Pacific theatre: one shows an American soldier holding a flame-thrower on Kwajalein Atoll another shows a beach landing at Luzon and a third shows a Marine posing next to a sign in Bougainville. Most were taken in the final years of the conflict including at Guadalcanal and Peleliu. There are also shots of the end of the war one showing a Japanese soldier surrendering with a white flag and another showing Japanese prisoners of war in a camp in Guam. The final photograph is the most famous "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima" showing six Marines raising the US flag on Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima. This photograph won the 1945 Pulitzer Prize for Photography. The majority of the photographs are commercial with a few opening portrait shots of the unidentified compiler. Oblong folio 286 x 390 mm. With 55 gelatin silver photographs one lacking approximately 90 x 130 mm landscape or portrait corner-mounted with tape recto and verso on 7 leaves remainder blank. With 2 additional gelatin silver photographs loosely inserted. Contemporary brown sheep commercial album tied through punched holes with brown cord front board stamped with central armourial panel in blind gilt and black. Boards chipped at extremities especially front board bottom left corner rear board rubbed leaves nicked at fore edge photographs moderately toned and creased some slightly torn and abraded: a good example. hardcover
