This was followed by the musical farce "Sharp and Flat" featuring Mr. Gattie Mr. HarleyWilliam Oxberry and Miss Poole. An additional musical farce entitled "The Boarding House or Five Hours at Brighton" was performed with Mr. Gattie Mr. Penley Mr. Knight Mr. Oxberry and Mrs. Orger among the actors and actresses. A notation of the indisosition of Miss Kelly preventing new pieces being played that night. Mary Russell Mitford's play Foscari premiered at the Theatre Royal on November 4th 1826 less than ten days before this performance. The play's protagonist Francesco Foscari was the longest reigning doge in Venetian history. Foscari was played by Charles Kemble a member of the great Kemble acting family alongside Charles Mayne Young James Prescott Warde and Daniel Egerton. The lower portion of the broadside lists forthcoming productions. Mitford had completed her play and given it to the theater prior to the 1821 publication of Byron's drama The Two Foscari based on the same subject but tensions between the actors Kemble and William Macready led to Mitford's play being pushed back by five years. <br/><br/> Printed by W. London I. K. Green 34 Lambeth Square sold by Moss Hyams 1830. Hand coloured engraved plate. 249x200 mm. Mounted in passepartout. Probably a part of a serie of theatre plates this is numbered 40. Full length portrait of the actor E. F. Saville as Jack Sheppard in the adaptation of Harrison Ainsworth's novel by J. T. Haines; striking a stance with legs apart facing 3/4 to the left and firing a pistol. Jack Sheppard 1702-24 was an 18th-century English thief who managed four spectacular escapes from London prisons before he was hanged in 1824. Two very scarce advertisements for Shakespeare plays performed at the Lyceum.The first of these programmes is for the Lyceum's 1875 production of 'Macbeth' starring Sir Henry Irving alongside American actress Kate Josephine Bateman Crowe and directed by Irving himself.The second programme is for the Lyceum's 1877 production of 'Richard III' with Irving performing as the Duke of Glo'ster and with Miss Bateman as Queen Margaret. Publ. brown blindstamped cloth spine sligthly faded and some wear at corners. Owner’s signature of Lauritz Falk and with ex-library stamp of Kungl. Dramatiska teatern. Rare first edition. Text in Russian. An English translation was published in 1935. Preface by Abraham Efros. An hommage to Alexander Tairov’s modernist Kamerny Theatre in Moscow with fine drawings of set- and costume design and scenes after photographs from its first 20 years. Alexander Tairov 1885-1950 produced many modern non-russian plays by Berthold Brecht Eugene O’Neill Oscar Wilde and G. B. Shaw and he collaborated with many of the foremost avant-garde artists in cubism constructivism etc. The gouverment closed down the theatre in 1949. Abraham Efros 1888-1954 from Moscow was a translator poet art historian and critic. After 1917 he served on the commission for the protection of artistic and antique treasures in the Russian Soviet Republic and on the boards of among other the Tretyakov Gallery and the GOSET Moscow State Jewish Theater. In the Stalinist purges of the late 1930s Efros was arrested and exiled and in the late 1940s he was ousted from his academic posts. The former owner is probably the Swedish-Norwegian actor and painter Lauritz Falk 1909-90. hardcover

La collezione documenta un momento decisivo della carriera della giovane Callas che si affermava proprio in quegli anni e che proprio alla Scala di Milano consolidò la sua fama. In una delle foto la vediamo sorridere infatti al fianco di Victor De Sabata che diresse nel 1951 i Vespri Siciliani il primo dei trionfi scaligeri della Callas al quel tempo ancora piuttosto in carne. As the surrealist poet Vítězslav Nezval writes in his manifesto "The avant-garde stage" from the first issue: "Forget all theatres that don't implement the most furtive needs of your bodies and souls forget them all" p. 9. Original staple-stitched pictorial self-wrappers; 16 pp. Minimal wear to wrappers with crease to upper right corner of front wrapper; else very good or better. Scarce program booklet for Havel's first full-length play "The Garden party" first staged in 1963 and presented here as the first performance of the 1963-1964 season at the small Prague Theatre on the Balustrade. While controversially received by official critics the play was an enormous success as it was recognized by Czech viewers as a very clever satire on the bureaucratic communist regime with its own absurd features which they lived in. "As all plays were subject to official censorship an outright satire of the neo-Stalinist regime would never have reached the stage; Havel took another route examining the mechanics of language and power in a decontextualized setting injecting it with enough hermeneutical ambiguity to satisfy and provoke" Sirkku Aaltonen "On translation censorship theatre Václav Havel and Vera Blackwell" in: Censoring Translation 2012. The booklet is strikingly illustrated using photographs of the play and examples of Havel's early forays into concrete poetry so-called "calligrams."
