‎LECOCQ, Charles (1832-1918); [THEATRE ROYAL, ADELAIDE]‎

‎Lecocq's opera bouffe in 3 acts of ""La Fille de Madame Angot"" as performed by The Soldene Opera Company under the management of Mr. C. A. Chizzola.‎

‎At head of title: The opera libretto. Adelaide : Printed at The Advertiser Office King Wm. Street 1878. Small octavo 175 x 120 mm original printed green wrappers stitched pp 40; contains the complete libretto for this work; a fine copy. Rare programme produced for the series of concerts given at Adelaide's Theatre Royal in April 1878 by the Soldene Opera Company during their 1878-79 tour of Australasia. This company was managed and headed by English singer actor and impresario Emily Soldene 1838-1912 one of the most renowned singers of comic opera in the late nineteenth century. Trove locates a single copy State Library of South Australia. A review of the second concert in the Adelaide series appeared in the Evening Journal Adelaide on 15 April 1878: 'THE OPERA.—On Saturday night ""La Fille de Madame Angot"" was repeated at the Theatre Royal and attracted a crowded house in all parts. There was a change of cast Miss Soldene taking the part of Madame Lange instead of Clairette the ""child of the market"" which role was assumed by Miss Fischer. In each of the characters the performers achieved a decided success and were honoured with several enthusiastic recalls and liberal floral offerings. Mr. J. C. Campbell sustained the part of Ange Pitou and at the close of the opera in response to vociferous calls appeared before the curtain with Miss Soldene and Miss Fischer.' unknown‎

‎ROYAL PRINCESS'S THEATRE (LONDON); [READE, Charles 1814-1884]‎

‎GOLD RUSH Royal Princess's Theatre Oxford Street. This evening . It is Never Too Late To Mend! By Charles Reade Esq.‎

‎London : s.n. 1865. Programme small octavo 178 x 120 mm 4 pp; embossed decorative borders front with lithographed view of the Royal Princess's Theatre centre pages with full cast list and detailed 'Programme of Scenery'; Act III which is titled 'Life in Australia' and is set on the goldfields includes the scenes 'Log Hut in Australia' and 'A Ravine' where the plot centres around 'The Great Nugget'; rear side with advertisement for Rimmel's Perfumes; in superb condition. The English dramatist and novelist Charles Reade 1814-1884 wrote several successful plays in the 1850s. It is never too late to mend : a matter of fact romance 1856 was his first novel and it too was quickly adapted for the stage. Largely based on his earlier play Gold 1853 which was set on the Australian goldfields Never too late to mend is a melodrama that also makes a damning attack on the harsh and abusive English penal system. It was first performed in 1858 and its popularity with English audiences gave it some longevity with productions still being staged in the 1880s. The first performance of Never too late to mend at the Royal Princess's Theatre in London's Soho was on 4 October 1865. This undated programme records ""last night but ten"" suggesting it was likely to have been printed during November 1865. The production starred Mr. Gaston Murray Mr. George Melville and Mr. A. B. Tapping. Numerous examples of broadside playbills and advertisements for Never too late to mend for various productions staged between 1858 and 1883 are held in Australian libraries. However Trove locates no programme for any production of the play making this extremely well preserved example - printed by the theatre and purchased by a patron who witnessed the play - a rare and significant survivor. unknown‎

‎[California Theatre] Dick Stagg, JC Milligan (photographers) J C‎

‎Archive of 41 photographs relating to silent film screenings at the California Theatre 1919-1921‎

‎Los Angeles: California Theatre 1921. Archive of 41 vintage photographs of the elaborate stage sets and live performers which supported silent film screenings at the California Theatre in Los Angeles taken during the theatre's first three years in operation 1919-1921. 20 photographs with blindstamps crediting photographer Dick Stagg and 14 with blindstamps crediting photographer J.C. Milligan.

Photographs housed in an album with typed labels on the versos of the adjacent pages identifying the film screening dates performers and musical numbers.

The first two photographs in the archive feature a day shot and a striking night shot of the theatre's beautifully elaborate facade followed by a photograph of the "original installation" of the stage and grand staircase. The balance of the photographs however show theatre sets usually with performers present occasionally with the orchestra present and always without the audience present likely taken during rehearsals or after the completion of the set designs.

The earliest dated photographs in the archive only two and a half weeks after the theatre's opening on December 24 1918 show two different sets for the screening of the 1918 film "Eye for an Eye." The last and latest photograph in the archive shows a parlor set with five costumed actors for the 1921 screening of the 1920 film "Billions." All in all 29 films are represented in the archive.

Interestingly many of the screening dates of the films represented in the archive coincide with-or date earlier than-the currently believed premiere dates of the films some of which may have had their premiere at the California Theatre.

Fred Miller opened the California Theatre at 810 S. Main Street in downtown Los Angeles on December 24 1918. The majestic Beaux-Arts cinema housed a capacity of 2000 and was designed by architect Alex B. Rosenthal who also designed the Granada Theatre in Santa Barbara. In 1919 the theatre was bought by Goldwyn Pictures and in 1935 operated as Teatro California often showing Spanish language films until 1983 after which it operated as a grindhouse and pornographic theater. The theater closed in 1987 and was demolished in 1990.

Photographs: 8 x 10 inches. Very Good plus to Near Fine overall with some faint toning with one photograph with two vertical creases.

Album: 13.75 x 10.25 inches. Very Good plus. California Theatre unknown‎

‎[PERFORMANCE] [MUSICAL THEATRE] WEILL, Kurt (music); Elmer Rice (book); Langston Hughes (lyrics)‎

‎Street Scene: an American Opera Based on Elmer Rice's Play‎

‎New York: Chappell & Co. Inc 1948. First Edition. First printing. Inscribed on title page: "For Joe Littau a merry Christmas and thanks for a beautiful job!" signed "Kurt Weill" undated but annotated in pencil presumably by Littau: "Xmas 1948." Quarto 30cm. Original buff wrappers printed in red on front cover; 274pp. Professional paper repairs at spine ends; expected tanning to exterior and text; still a superlative copy overall and quite uncommon. Housed in a custom-made cloth clamshell box.

A terrific association copy of this acclaimed late work by Weill for which he won the inaugural Tony Award for Best Original Score in 1947. Street Scene is perhaps the apotheosis of Weill's socially-engaged musical theater a blend of operatic and theatrical elements with which he first experimented in his collaborations with Bertolt Brecht of the Thirties including Three Penny Opera and The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny. Street Scene based on Elmer Rice's naturalistic working-class drama of the same name was especially noteworthy for including lyrics by the African-American poet Langston Hughes whom Weill sought out specifically to "lift the everyday language of the people into a simple unsophisticated poetry" quoted by Jane Vial Jaffe in her program notes to a 2008 production. This was Hughes' first experience writing for musical theater.

Street Scene premiered at the Adelphi Theater in New York in January 1947 and met with critical success though its high production costs forced the production to close in April. The show has never been revived on Broadway but it has been staged regularly by operatic companies including revivals by the New York City Opera in 1959 1979 and 1990.

Inscriptions by Weill are uncommon; it's an honor he appears to have bestowed only on very close friends and collaborators. In this case the presentation is to Joe Littau the well-known pit conductor who was at this time the Musical Director for Weill's 1948 musical "Love Life" which ran on Broadway from October 1948 to May 1949. ‎[SOVIET UNION] [YOUTH THEATRE]‎

‎Leningradskiy Gosudagstv Teatr Rabochey Molodezhi TRAM. Gastrol'naya Poyezdka 1933‎

‎Leningrad: TRAM Theater for Working Youth 1933. Original program for the Leningrad State Theater for Working Youth during their 1933 national tour. Single sheet 25cm x 69cm printed both sides folded to form eight panels. Printed in black and white on newsprint with halftone reproductions of production photographs to each panel. Minor toning; panels slightly mis-folded; Very Good.

TRAM under the direction of Mikhail Sokolovsky was a working theater for proletarian youth focused on producing plays of working-class life promoting Marxist ideology. This program issued for the group's 1933 tour of the Soviet Union promotes the season's two offerings Alexei Tolstoy and Aleksandr Starchakov's "The Right to Live"; and Sokolovsky's adaptation of Denis Fonvizin's 18th-c. comedy "The Minor." Also illustrated are scenes from past productions - A.I. Piotrovsky's "Rule Britannia;" a performance by Ivan Dzerzhinsky's music and dance ensemble "Green Workshop" and two others. A rare program; very little primary material relating to TRAM has appeared in the marketplace and the current program does not appear to be held by any OCLC member institution.
