[NEW THEATRE ROYAL]
New Theatre Royal English Opera Strand. This present Friday August 22 1817 Will be performed Eighth Time an entirely New Pastoral Serio-Comick Opera called The Persian Hunters Or the Rose of Gurgistan.
London: s.n. 1817. Single leaf broadside. Some creasing and browning. Inked '65' to head of recto. An early playbill - marking the eighth performance - for Charles Edward Horn's 1786-1849 'Serio-Comick Opera' The Persian Hunters which was first staged just nine days earlier on August 13 1817. Based upon a Persian tale in which a Sultan conceives of the notion of romantic love seeking a partner who was ignorant of his royal station and attracted to him for what the La Belle Assemblee described in a contemporary review as 'his mere person'. The periodical notes that the 'scenery is peculiarly good pleasing and characteristic; the music is appropriate accordance with the scenery characters and story'. The building which later housed the English Opera House had been used to stage exhibitions and performances of various types including at different points those of the Royal Academy and Madam Tussauds since 1765 but was not licensed as a patent theatre until 1809. Rebuilt in 1816 by Arnold it re-opened and operated under this name until 1830 when it burned down and later replaced by the Lyceum Theatre. The summer of 1817 marked a time of great innovation for the London stage; both the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and the English Opera House introduced gas lighting throughout replacing candles - changing the atmosphere of the production and theatre ownership a somewhat safer proposition. The proud inclusion of 'The GAS LIGHTS are now introduced over the whole Stage' as the headline of this playbill demonstrates the marketing emphasis that was put on the endeavour. . Dimensions 190 x 305mm. [s.n.] unknown

[THEATRE ROYAL DRURY LANE]
New Theatre Royal Drury Lane. This Evening Wednesday June 81825 His Majesty's Servants will perform for the 9th time a new Historical Play called william tell. With new scenery dresses and decorations The interspersed Music composed by Mr. H. R. Bishop
London: s.n. 1825. Single leaf broadside. Two small marginal holes to left hand edge. An early playbill marking the ninth performance of Irish dramatist James Sheridan Knowles' 1784-1862 adaptation of Schiller's famous revolutionary Swiss drama William Tell. First staged at Drury Lane on the 11th May Knowles' translation was criticised by Thomas Rea for its excessive melodrama making the hero 'so loquacious as to seem almost a braggart.' Despite this the performance of William Macready in the title role was much applauded and Thomas Archer was suitably despicable as the villainous character of Gesler. The first adaptation of William Tell performed in England was staged at the Royal Amphitheatre on 7th June 1802 with Knowles' version being the second produced in 1825; the first - and a more critically acclaimed - full English translation had been produced by Samuel Robinson only months prior. The subsequent evening entertainment is advertised as the sixtieth showing of Der Freischütz the Romantic opera by Carl Maria von Weber 1786-1826. . Dimensions 204 x 350 mm. [s.n.] unknown

William Thomas Moncrieff 1794 1857 English playwright and theatre manager Thomas Simpson Cooke Irish singer and composer:
William Thomas Moncrieff English playwright and theatre manager. Autograph Letter Signed inviting to the Irish singer and composer Tom Cooke to collaborate on a production at the Victoria Theatre.
3 November 1835; Victoria i.e. the Victoria Theatre London. See the two men’s entries in the Oxford DNB. 2pp 12mo. Bifolium. Aged and a little worn with short closed tear at head of the first leaf repaired with tape and the second leaf having a discoloration at one edge from tape used in mount. Signed ‘W. T. Moncrieff’. Casting interesting light on the production of melodramas in the ‘Surrey-side’ theatres. In an effort to induce him to collaborate with him on a production at the Victoria Theatre he begins: ‘My dear Cooke / Without wishing to interfere with any arrangement you may have made or may be contemplating to make - there can be no harm in my dropping a hint that the Proprietors here would be most happy to secure your Services at any time on your own terms - if at all within their means’. Such an arrangement would also please Moncrieff ‘as I have the idea of a Drama that I think very likely to prove quite as attractive as ever “My Poll and my Partner Joe†may prove.’ That play by J. T. Haines and with music by Jolly was a great success at the Royal Surrey Theatre in the same year. He ends by asking Cooke to ‘turn this over in hyour mind at your leisure and favor me with a line on the subject’. 3 November 1835; Victoria [i.e. the Victoria Theatre, London]. unknown

Cort Theatre Chicago
1925 program booklet for "White Cargo a vivid play of the primitive" by Leon Gordon
Chicago: Cort Theatre 1925. Wraps. Very good. 7.75 x 5.25 inches color pictorial wraps very good. 16 pp illustrated ads program etc. The play about adventures and romance in west Africa was also made into a movie in 1942 starring Walter Pigeon and Hedy Lamarr. We've provided the plot of the movie which differs only slightly from the play: During the early years of World War II Worthing Richard Ainley the "boss" is on board a seaplane the Congo Queen on an inspection tour of rubber plantations in remote locations in the West African jungle. The plane lands at a large modern operation. Worthing tells the local supervisor that they must maximize production because the Japanese hold Malaya reducing the supply of that critical war material. He points to a photograph on the wall that shows thatched shacks beside a river and remembers the old days in 1910 before "refrigerators electricity and air-conditioning gadgets.schools and infirmaries." The camera zooms into the photo which comes to life. Four men the only whites within hundreds of square miles eagerly await the arrival of the riverboat Congo Queen. Wilbur Ashley Bramwell Fletcher and his boss Harry Witzel Walter Pidgeon have succumbed to the monotony of living and working together in isolation and grown to hate one-another. Ashley is finally going home being replaced by the abominably green Langford Richard Carlson set to commence a four-year stint. The other greeters are the badly alcoholic doctor Frank Morgan and ineffectual missionary Reverend Dr. Roberts Henry O'Neill. There is nothing Witzel hates more than breaking in a new man. He and Langford get off to a bad start with Witzel constantly badgering Langford and insisting that he'll never stick won't work out and would do them both a favor by just going home. Things only go downhill from there. As it had been with Ashley it takes all of the efforts of the doctor and Roberts to keep the two men from each other's throats. The situation becomes worse when Tondelayo Hedy Lamarr a notorious bauble-craving native seductress returns. Harry as resident magistrate has already ordered her to leave his district declaring her to be a disruptive immoral influence. Tondelayo begins to work her wiles on Langford. Despite warnings from all three of the other men and clearly to spite Witzel he falls for her charms - as both Ashley and Witzel had before him. And her incessant pestering for silks and bangles and gold jewelry from Lagos. When Witzel's orders her expelled once more Langford decides to marry her to put her past the slightly deranged but well-intentioned man's incessant rebukes. Roberts reveals that rather than being a native African she is half Egyptian and half Arab making marriage unpleasant to the other men's sensibilities but morally acceptable. In spite of his better judgment and loud and sustained protests from Witzel Roberts feels compelled by his faith to join the couple in holy matrimony. After five months Tondelayo has grown bored of her husband and he of her. Always stirring up trouble to spice up her life she tries to seduce Harry; he refused to allow the old flame to be re-lit reminding her that she is Mrs. Langford "until death do you part". With that she sees a way out of her bonds. When Langford becomes sick the doctor gives her medicine to administer to him. She obtains poison from a native in trade for a rifle and gives him that instead. Harry suspecting her deception hides then ambushes her just as she is about to give Langford a fatal dose. In his dual roles of local magistrate and self-appointed avenger of wrong Harry forces her to drink the rest of the poison. She runs away screaming and collapses on the jungle floor. The doctor takes Langford away on the Congo Queen for better medical treatment Witzel identifying the man merely as ‘white cargo'. From the boat comes Langford's replacement: a young maddeningly enthusiastic and infuriatingly naive Worthing. After trying but failing to hold his temper Harry seizes him and forcefully tells him that he will stick around. Nothing will stop him from living breathing and thinking rubber 24 hours a day.
