‎[Theatre] [Americana]‎

‎Collection of ten original route cards for five itinerant theatre productions‎

‎N.p.: N.p. 1929. Collection of ten vintage route cards advertising the showing schedules of five different traveling theatre shows produced by Cincinnati producer George E. Wintz between 1926 and 1929.

Among the shows represented in this collection are "Ziegfeld Follies" Irving Berlin's "Music Box Revue" "The Vagabond King" "Rio Rita" and "George White's Scandals." The shows apparently toured primarily in the mid-Atlantic and southern United States. Four cards have postmarks on the verso and are addressed to a Charlie North likely a crew or cast member for Wintz's run of "George White's Scandals" from Harry Cook the props master of Wintz's shows.

Itinerant or traveling theatre shows gained popularity during the early and mid-1920s with commercial genres such as vaudeville and musical revues finding particular success during Prohibition when jazz cabarets speakeasies and nightclubs would stage elaborate shows in order to hide the fact that audiences were actually flocking in to obtain alcohol.

Cards range from 3.25 x 5.5 inches to 3 x 5 inches. Generally about Near Fine. N.p. unknown‎

‎ROYAL GRECIAN THEATRE (LONDON); CONQUEST, George Augustus (1837-1901)‎

‎Royal Grecian Theatre. Forget & forgive ; or Love me leave me not.‎

‎At head of title: On Monday April the 8th 1861 and during the week the performances will commence with a New Drama in 4 acts by Mr. G. Conquest partly founded on a tale by Pierce Egan Esq. entitled . Whitechapel : Pownceby Steam Printer 43 Leman St. 1861. Double-page playbill 340 x 430 mm; lithograph printed on thin paper; original central fold in very good condition. A rare large-format playbill produced for the opening night of Forget & forgive ; or Love me leave me not at the Royal Grecian Theatre formerly the Eagle Tavern in London's Shoreditch in April 1861. The theatre's proprietor Benjamin Conquest 1803-1872 also managed the Garrick Theatre in nearby Leman Street - where the present playbill happens to have been printed by Henry Pownceby. George Conquest Benjamin's son not only wrote this play; he also produced directed and starred in it. This would have been one of the first of around 100 productions that the father-and-son team staged during the 1860s and early 1870s. The first act of this three-act melodrama is set in the 'Crags and mountain tops of Australia'. The characters listed on the playbill are Dick Stoney an escaped convict played by Mr Alfred Rayner; Nut Gull an 'anythingarian and lover of money' Mr George Conquest; Francis Fairland 'a wealthy trader' Mr Holland; Henry Moreland 'a settler in Australia' Mr William James; and Adele 'a wild girl and half Native wife of Henry Moreland' Mrs Charles Dillon. The final part of this opening act is described thus: 'A Dell near the Sea! The Hut and Home of Adele The Wild Girl of Australia . the Loving Wife . Love me leave me not! The Flight . the Shot.' The action then moves to England where the final two acts take place and the paths of Dick Stoney Nut Gull Henry Moreland and Adele all cross once again. The performance of Forget & forgive was followed by a burlesque - also written by Conquest - entitled Guy Faux! and a single-act play Ostler's Vision penned by local actor Alfred Rayner. A musical concert with free admission held in the Assembly Room concluded the evening's entertainment. Trove locates a single example of this playbill in Australian collections SLNSW unknown‎

‎WHITEHALL PRODUCTIONS (SYDNEY); [MINERVA THEATRE]; [COPPEL, Alec]‎

‎SYDNEY; THEATRE; CINEMA Minerva. Whitehall Productions presents ""Mr. Smart Guy"".‎

‎Cover title. Sydney NSW : Publicity Pty. Ltd. 1941. Small quarto 247 x 184 mm original pictorial wrappers light vertical fold staple bound 16 pp with photographic portraits including writer/director Alec Coppel and actors advertisements for local businesses; a good copy. Programme produced for the world premiere on May 10 1941 of the play Mr. Smart Guy written and directed by internationally acclaimed Australian screenwriter novelist and playwright Alec Coppel at the Minerva Theatre Orwell Street in Sydney's King's Cross. Coppel who was born in Melbourne and educated at Wesley College had just returned from England where he had already worked as a writer for theatre radio and film. In Sydney he co-founded Whitehall Productions an adventurous theatre company for which he also wrote and directed plays. After the war Coppel would return to London where he wrote the script for Edward Dmytryk's celebrated film noir Obsession 1949 - based on Coppel's own novel A Man about a Dog. He then moved to Hollywood where his career really took off: he became the first Australian to receive an Academy Award nomination for screenwriting with The Captain's Paradise 1953. But Coppel's most significant achievement - albeit one that is not as well known in Australia as it should be - was to co-write the screenplay for a film that is consistently acknowledged as one of the greatest of all time Hitchcock's Vertigo 1958. 'The time has come for the legitimate theatre in Australia to re-establish itself and Whitehall Productions intends to see that it does exactly this. During the past few years it has been generally thought that the talkies have killed the theatre. This is not so. Talkies hit the public as a novelty and as a novelty built up a tremendous following. Today the legitimate theatre has the opportunity to use the same weapon to fight back. In Australia there is a whole generation of people who have never been to the theatre and to whom legitimate stage production is a novelty. A company that is prepared to show theatre to these people in a modern and attractive form will win the support of this generation. The aim of Whitehall Productions is to establish a permanent theatre in this town which will concern itself purely with the presentation of a continuous series of good modern and commercial plays.' p.1 This highly important Sydney theatre programme associated with Australia's most notable pioneer Hollywood screenwriter is unrecorded in Australian collections. unknown‎

‎ROYAL PRINCESS'S THEATRE, EDINBURGH; [BYRON, Henry J]‎

‎Royal Princess's Theatre Nicolson Street Edinburgh. Robinson Crusoe and his man Friday! Or Harlequin King Hoop-de-Dooden-Doo & the Savages of the Desolate Island.‎

‎The Overture and Music Composed Selected and Arranged by Mr R. B. Stewart. The whole produced under the entire direction of Mr J. W. Kimber and Personal Supervision of Mr W. Paterson . . Edinburgh : s.n. 1864 5 - 30 January. Playbill 760 x 255 mm; lithograph printed recto only with an illustration by J. F. Coullie of a scene from the pantomime behind the large-lettered title; old central fold small tear at bottom right corner loss of a few words of text relating to opening times but otherwise clean and very well preserved. A large format playbill for the 1864 Edinburgh production of a grotesque pantomime based on Henry J. Byron's popular Robinson Crusoe; or Harlequin Friday and the king of the Caribee Islands. Byron had adapted his work from a much earlier pantomime of the 1780s and 1790s Robinson Crusoe; or Harlequin Friday: a grand pantomime which was penned by none other than the great Irish satirist Richard Brinsley Sheridan. For each of the ten scenes in the play a description is given of the setting characters and elaborate scenery devices and the performing cast is named in full. One of the main attractions in the pantomime is staged in Scene 9: this is the 'Grand Aboriginal Ballet - a New Zea-land Maori Festival' which would have been a fantasy pastiche of imagined South Sea rituals. unknown‎

‎(Theatre) Brooke, Henry‎

‎Gustavus Vasa: A Tragedy in Five Acts . With Alterations and Amendments as Performed at the New Theatre in Boston‎

‎Boston: Printed for John West 1794. 62pp. 12mo. Disbound. Foxing a few edge tears to title staining to final few leaves small hole with minor loss to final leaf. 62pp. 12mo. Theater had been banned in Boston since the times of Increase Mather at the end of the 17th century. But in 1792 a group of Bostonians petitioned the legislature to repeal the Puritanical laws prohibiting theatrical performances and illegally established a theater in Board Alley. When Governor John Hancock sent his sheriff to shut down a performance a riot ensued. The following year an even bigger theater designed by an American architect and supported by John Quincy Adams and other notables was built at the corner of Federal and Franklin Streets. Known as the Federal Street Theatre or Boston Theatre the building opened at the beginning of February 1794 with a performance of Henry Brooke's Gustavus Vasa.

Widespread publication of the plays did occur until after the Revolution when a rising middle and upper class demanded the cultural improvement of the young nation. "The market in America for published plays was determined by the theatre. It was the playgoer who bought plays and he bought the text of the play he had just seen or the one he was about to see performed on the stage. The absence of sustained theatrical activity-in fact the failure of the theatre to establish itself-in the English colonies during the first half of the eighteenth century suggests why no editions of plays were published in America during that time" Stoddard.

In December 1793 with the opening of the Federal Street Theatre imminent Boston publishers David and John West proposed the publication of a selection of plays. "West proposed 'to obtain from the manager of the new theatre such plays of merit as will be performed in Boston the ensuing winter and it will be his aim to have them ready for delivery as near the time of performance as possible . They shall be printed weekly . The price to subscribers stitched in blue paper will be twenty cents each play' . West's ambition exceeded his capabilities but between January 4 and April 30 1794 he published thirteen numbers i.e. plays'" Stoddard. This of course included the first play at the Boston Theatre: Gustavus Vasa.

The work was issued separately although also published within West's nonce volume A Selection of the Most Esteemed Plays Performed at the Theatre in Boston. Scarce. Evans 26704; ESTC W12546. Alden John Eliot. "A Season in Federal Street". Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society vol. 65 no. 1 1955. Stoddard Roger. ‎The Greenwich Village Theatre Program for a production of Fashion 1924‎

‎New York 1924. Single leaf wrapper folded; two typescript leaves; one handbill. 4to. Illustrated unbound pamphlet wrapper folded with toning and some soiling along edge on recto two spots on verso and small tear near center at edge of page on verso; two typescript leaves folded in: Anna Cora Mowatt's prologue to Fashion and Count Jolimaitre prologue from the Provincetown Player's production; a typescript leaf with a subscription handbill laid in; overall a very good copy of a scarce program and novel piece of New York and theatre history. Single leaf wrapper folded; two typescript leaves; one handbill. 4to. The Greenwich Village Theatre playhouse opened on November 15 1917 on Sheridan Square at Christopher Street where W. 4th Street and 7th Avenue meet and was designed by Herman Lee Meader in a Dutch Colonial style. Actor Frank Conroy was integral in its development and ran the theatre. As early cinema became popular in 1921 The Greenwich started showing films between play engagements. The theatre caused controversy with some residents of Greenwich Village who took offense at the Bohemian lifestyles the space cultivated and promoted and many complaints were lobbied against it over incidents such as a "lewd poster" for an Audrey Munson film Heedless Moths.

In May 1926 the theater management announced that it had merged with the Actors' Theatre. The name Actors' Theatre was retained and while its permanent home had not been decided upon the announcement made one thing clear: "It will not be the Greenwich Village."

In January 1928 N. Brewster Morse signed a five-year lease with owner Marguerite A. Barker. Marguerite Abbott Barker b.1893 - d.1930 was a woman of wealth through her father who was president of Eastman Kodak. She was very active in the Greenwich Village theatre scene and hoped to provide a more experimental approach to the theatre experience that included "musical dramatic and motion picture features with a change of program every two weeks." In the lounge area art exhibitions were to be held "where tea coffee and cigarettes will be served during the intermissions." Among the first films screened was Paul Fejos's The Last Moment described by one critic as an "impressionistic picture." She intended to show "unusual films at popular prices" beginning on April 9 1928.

Fashion was the first play produced by a woman playwright Anna Cora Mowatt in 1845 and revived by the Provincetown Players the original Players included George Cram Cook Susan Glaspell Eugene O'Neill John Reed Louise Bryant Floyd Dell Ida Rauh Edna St. Vincent Millay and Djuna Barnes who maintained residence The Provincetown Playhouse at 133 MacDougal Street. This production for The Greenwich Village Theatre ran from April to July 1924 and in the program here states Eugene O'Neill among it's directors.

On February 4 1930 The New York Times announced "Demolition of the Greenwich Village Theatre on the northwest corner of Christopher and Fourth Streets.will begin early in March." The article explained that developers George and Edward Blum had filed plans for a 19-story apartment building the tallest in Greenwich Village. The demolished theater was replaced with the two-story Art Deco style Stewarts Cafeteria building that survives significantly altered at street level. unknown‎
