TIVOLI THEATRE (SYDNEY)
Miles Stavordale Quintette : songs without singers voices on strings. The Tivoli's latest sensation!
Sydney NSW : Tivoli Theatre 1906. Lithographic postcard 141 x 89 mm verso with undivided back; not mailed in fine condition. The following notice in the Sydney Morning Herald 21 February 1906 announced: 'On Saturday afternoon March 3 Mr. Harry Rickards will introduce the Miles Stavordale Quintette an important star turn secured through the courtesy of Mr. Edward Moss director of many big English vaudeville enterprises. The quintette consists of four banjos and a harp played in such a unique way as very closely to imitate human voices.' ""Jack Stavordale"" was the stage name of English musician John Emet-Thomas 1857-1914 who was the founder of a banjo quartet. After the quartet was joined by harpist George Miles the group billed itself as the Miles Stavordale Quintette. Its sound was unique as it imitated a male choir by using special plectrums on custom-built instruments. The group made several sound recordings and were brought to Australia as a vaudeville novelty act in 1906 by Harry Richards owner of Sydney's Tivoli Theatre performing in Sydney Brisbane and Melbourne. Trove locates no example of this Tivoli postcard nor any similar promotional material for the Miles Stavordale Quintette in Australian institutional collections. unknown
