On Monday January 28 1856 the above Theatre will open for a short season of Two Nights. Entirely new scenery and decorations. The Performances will commence with the Old Boscombe Frace in One Act called
" He Whoops to Conquer " by Sir Percy Shelley. . After which will be produced a Drama in Two Acts entitled " The Wreck Ashore " by J.B. Buckstone Esq. . Miss Churchill will Preside at the piano - forte . Christchurch : Tucker Printer. 1856 . Single sheet. Playbill. Printed black on yellow thin delicate paper. 417mm high x 189mm. Few chips on the edges and a circular hole near the top resulting in slight loss to a capital letter otherwise a clean virtually intact well preserved delicate item. Sir Percy Florence Shelley 1819 - 1889 was the son and only surviving child of Percy Bysse Shelley and his second wife Mary Shelley. In 1849 Sir Percy bought the Boscombe Manor Estate a sizeable property of which Boscombe Cottage was part. Sir Percy intended that the cottage would become a home for his mother Mary Shelley unfortunately she died in 1851 before moving in. The cottage was extensively rebuilt and extended to include a theatre in which Sir Percy and his wife put on plays to entertain their friends. In 1866 Sir Percy built a new theatre attached to the house after the death of Sir Percy and his wife the theatre saw many changes of use. It has recently been re-furbished and will open again as a theatre in 2012 as the Shelley Manor Theatre. This playbill is from the pre - 1866 theatre.
