There was a change of cast Miss Soldene taking the part of Madame Lange instead of Clairette the ""child of the market"" which role was assumed by Miss Fischer. In each of the characters the performers achieved a decided success and were honoured with several enthusiastic recalls and liberal floral offerings. Mr. J. C. ROYAL PRINCESS'S THEATRE (LONDON); [READE, Charles 1814-1884]
GOLD RUSH Royal Princess's Theatre Oxford Street. This evening . It is Never Too Late To Mend! By Charles Reade Esq.
London : s.n. 1865. Programme small octavo 178 x 120 mm 4 pp; embossed decorative borders front with lithographed view of the Royal Princess's Theatre centre pages with full cast list and detailed 'Programme of Scenery'; Act III which is titled 'Life in Australia' and is set on the goldfields includes the scenes 'Log Hut in Australia' and 'A Ravine' where the plot centres around 'The Great Nugget'; rear side with advertisement for Rimmel's Perfumes; in superb condition. The English dramatist and novelist Charles Reade 1814-1884 wrote several successful plays in the 1850s. It is never too late to mend : a matter of fact romance 1856 was his first novel and it too was quickly adapted for the stage. Largely based on his earlier play Gold 1853 which was set on the Australian goldfields Never too late to mend is a melodrama that also makes a damning attack on the harsh and abusive English penal system. It was first performed in 1858 and its popularity with English audiences gave it some longevity with productions still being staged in the 1880s. The first performance of Never too late to mend at the Royal Princess's Theatre in London's Soho was on 4 October 1865. This undated programme records ""last night but ten"" suggesting it was likely to have been printed during November 1865. The production starred Mr. Gaston Murray Mr. George Melville and Mr. A. B. Tapping. Numerous examples of broadside playbills and advertisements for Never too late to mend for various productions staged between 1858 and 1883 are held in Australian libraries. However Trove locates no programme for any production of the play making this extremely well preserved example - printed by the theatre and purchased by a patron who witnessed the play - a rare and significant survivor.  unknown

ROYAL GRECIAN THEATRE (LONDON); CONQUEST, George Augustus (1837-1901)
Royal Grecian Theatre. Forget & forgive ; or Love me leave me not.
At head of title: On Monday April the 8th 1861 and during the week the performances will commence with a New Drama in 4 acts by Mr. G. Conquest partly founded on a tale by Pierce Egan Esq. entitled . Whitechapel : Pownceby Steam Printer 43 Leman St. 1861. Double-page playbill 340 x 430 mm; lithograph printed on thin paper; original central fold in very good condition. A rare large-format playbill produced for the opening night of Forget & forgive ; or Love me leave me not at the Royal Grecian Theatre formerly the Eagle Tavern in London's Shoreditch in April 1861. The theatre's proprietor Benjamin Conquest 1803-1872 also managed the Garrick Theatre in nearby Leman Street - where the present playbill happens to have been printed by Henry Pownceby. George Conquest Benjamin's son not only wrote this play; he also produced directed and starred in it. This would have been one of the first of around 100 productions that the father-and-son team staged during the 1860s and early 1870s. The first act of this three-act melodrama is set in the 'Crags and mountain tops of Australia'. The characters listed on the playbill are Dick Stoney an escaped convict played by Mr Alfred Rayner; Nut Gull an 'anythingarian and lover of money' Mr George Conquest; Francis Fairland 'a wealthy trader' Mr Holland; Henry Moreland 'a settler in Australia' Mr William James; and Adele 'a wild girl and half Native wife of Henry Moreland' Mrs Charles Dillon. The final part of this opening act is described thus: 'A Dell near the Sea! The Hut and Home of Adele The Wild Girl of Australia . the Loving Wife . Love me leave me not! The Flight . the Shot.' The action then moves to England where the final two acts take place and the paths of Dick Stoney Nut Gull Henry Moreland and Adele all cross once again. The performance of Forget & forgive was followed by a burlesque - also written by Conquest - entitled Guy Faux! and a single-act play Ostler's Vision penned by local actor Alfred Rayner. A musical concert with free admission held in the Assembly Room concluded the evening's entertainment. Trove locates a single example of this playbill in Australian collections SLNSW unknown

WHITEHALL PRODUCTIONS (SYDNEY); [MINERVA THEATRE]; [COPPEL, Alec]
SYDNEY; THEATRE; CINEMA Minerva. Whitehall Productions presents ""Mr. Smart Guy"".
Cover title. Sydney NSW : Publicity Pty. Ltd. 1941. Small quarto 247 x 184 mm original pictorial wrappers light vertical fold staple bound 16 pp with photographic portraits including writer/director Alec Coppel and actors advertisements for local businesses; a good copy. Programme produced for the world premiere on May 10 1941 of the play Mr. Smart Guy written and directed by internationally acclaimed Australian screenwriter novelist and playwright Alec Coppel at the Minerva Theatre Orwell Street in Sydney's King's Cross. Coppel who was born in Melbourne and educated at Wesley College had just returned from England where he had already worked as a writer for theatre radio and film. In Sydney he co-founded Whitehall Productions an adventurous theatre company for which he also wrote and directed plays. After the war Coppel would return to London where he wrote the script for Edward Dmytryk's celebrated film noir Obsession 1949 - based on Coppel's own novel A Man about a Dog. He then moved to Hollywood where his career really took off: he became the first Australian to receive an Academy Award nomination for screenwriting with The Captain's Paradise 1953. But Coppel's most significant achievement - albeit one that is not as well known in Australia as it should be - was to co-write the screenplay for a film that is consistently acknowledged as one of the greatest of all time Hitchcock's Vertigo 1958. 'The time has come for the legitimate theatre in Australia to re-establish itself and Whitehall Productions intends to see that it does exactly this. During the past few years it has been generally thought that the talkies have killed the theatre. This is not so. Talkies hit the public as a novelty and as a novelty built up a tremendous following. Today the legitimate theatre has the opportunity to use the same weapon to fight back. In Australia there is a whole generation of people who have never been to the theatre and to whom legitimate stage production is a novelty. A company that is prepared to show theatre to these people in a modern and attractive form will win the support of this generation. The aim of Whitehall Productions is to establish a permanent theatre in this town which will concern itself purely with the presentation of a continuous series of good modern and commercial plays.' p.1 This highly important Sydney theatre programme associated with Australia's most notable pioneer Hollywood screenwriter is unrecorded in Australian collections. unknown

ROYAL PRINCESS'S THEATRE, EDINBURGH; [BYRON, Henry J.]
Royal Princess's Theatre Nicolson Street Edinburgh. Robinson Crusoe and his man Friday! Or Harlequin King Hoop-de-Dooden-Doo & the Savages of the Desolate Island.
The Overture and Music Composed Selected and Arranged by Mr R. B. Stewart. The whole produced under the entire direction of Mr J. W. Kimber and Personal Supervision of Mr W. Paterson . . Edinburgh : s.n. 1864 5 - 30 January. Playbill 760 x 255 mm; lithograph printed recto only with an illustration by J. F. Coullie of a scene from the pantomime behind the large-lettered title; old central fold small tear at bottom right corner loss of a few words of text relating to opening times but otherwise clean and very well preserved. A large format playbill for the 1864 Edinburgh production of a grotesque pantomime based on Henry J. Byron's popular Robinson Crusoe; or Harlequin Friday and the king of the Caribee Islands. Byron had adapted his work from a much earlier pantomime of the 1780s and 1790s Robinson Crusoe; or Harlequin Friday: a grand pantomime which was penned by none other than the great Irish satirist Richard Brinsley Sheridan. For each of the ten scenes in the play a description is given of the setting characters and elaborate scenery devices and the performing cast is named in full. One of the main attractions in the pantomime is staged in Scene 9: this is the 'Grand Aboriginal Ballet - a New Zea-land Maori Festival' which would have been a fantasy pastiche of imagined South Sea rituals. unknown
