[Music – Con Artists – Theatre – Chicago] Lander, Max; "Princess Dalla Pattra"
Tears Make My Rainbows
Chicago Illinois: Egyptian Press 1932. Folio 5 pp. Wraps torn at seam slightly musty odor good condition. An unrecorded composition by a woman who travelled through the midwest claiming to be a descendant of Cleopatra using the name Princess Dalla Pattra. The details of the princess are murky as she disappears from newspaper records after 1930 when she admitted in court to using a manager to stage a publicity stunt in St. Louis.1 In her hearing she also admitted that she had been arrested for embezzlement in San Francisco in 1920. Two years later rather inexplicably this songsheet was published in collaboration with a Max Lander who according to patent records was English.

The introduction to the song reads: “Hear the desert winds shriek and the tom-toms in the distance thrilling with the weird undertone of the desert night then the calm as the Royal Egyptian Maiden sings her love song to her desert prince.†We find no record of the composition in OCLC or anywhere else or of the princess in newspapers after her 1930 court appearance with the only findable record of her continued impersonation a patent registered in 19312 and this song sheet.

1 “St. Louis Wonders if it Got a Fooling†Kirksville Daily Express and Kirksville Daily News April 6 1930.
2 “Only to be with you just for a day†Catalog of Copyright Entries Part 3: Musical Compositions Library of Congress Copyright Office 1932 22760 accessed at https://archive.org/details/bub_gb_ZS5jAAAAIAAJ/page/1165/. Paris 1796. 390 x 290 mm.

Some foxing and minor wear. Hall III p. 385 2.

Raucourt a popular and controversial French actress made her debut at the Comédie Française in 1772 as Dido going on to play all the classical tragédienne roles. "Her beauty and talent had made her famous but her not so secret love affairs with other women made her notorious. . Raucourt led the Sect of Anadrynes a society of lesbians in Paris. . At the outbreak of the Revolution she was imprisoned for six months with other royalist members of the Comédie Française and she did not reappear upon that stage until the close of 1793 and then only for a short time. She deserted with a dozen of the best actors in the company to found a rival colony but a summons from the Directory brought her back in 1797. . Her funeral was the occasion of a riot. The clergy of her parish having refused to receive the body the crowd broke in the church doors and were only restrained from further violence by the arrival of an almoner sent posthaste by Louis XVIII." [Women] [Suffrage] [Theatre] [Marlowe, Julia] Genthe, Arnold
Portrait of Julia Marlowe. Inscribed by Marlow to a Friend 1940
New York: Arnold Genthe 1920. Silver gelatin print 6 ¾ x 9 ¼ inches on larger mount. Signed by Genthe on the mount inscribed by Marlowe as Marlowe Sothern on the mount as follows: “To Jean: our little comrade on our walks in Beautiful Stockbridge. In remembrance also of 'Sun Yat Sen' and Choo-Chio Chow. September. 1940. Julia Marlowe Sothern. Very Good. An uncommon image of the actress feminist and suffrage advocate Julia Marlowe who adopted the name - though never legally - Julia Marlowe Sothern after working with the Shakespearean actor E.H. Sothern. Ill health led Marlowe to retire from the stage in 1924 and she was seldom seen in public. This photograph inscribed later in her life is an uncommon relic from her reclusive later years. We can find no record of a Jean or the names mentioned.

Arnold Genthe who famously photographed the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 from the site of his destroyed studio moved to New York in 1911 where he became a portrait photographer. He most likely took this picture in his stint on the east coast. We find no other record of this specific portrait of Marlowe. Some silvering at margins otherwise excellent with some light normal tanning to mount. Arnold Genthe unknown

[Cuba]. [Theatre]
Collection of Playbills from the Gran Teatro Payret in Cuba
Havana: Moises V. Codina 1908. Good plus. Seven broadsides each approximately 22 x 7.25 inches plus one double bill measuring about 22 x 15 inches. One broadside printed in red and black. Previously folded. Scattered shallow tears from edges not affecting text with some tape repairs on blank versos. A group of eight playbills spanning eight consecutive days in July 1908 that advertise performances and events at the Gran Teatro Payret in Havana. The theater was built by its namesake Jaoquin Payret in 1877 on a corner across from the Villanueva Railway Station now the Capitolio Nacional de la Habana and initially focused on opera and high-class performing arts to compete directly with other established theaters in the Cuban capital. The building had five floors and a capacity of 2300 but the upper balconies collapsed in 1882 after which the theater changed hands and began to showcase more varied popular offerings.

These playbills publicize an array of performers including the ballet dancer Millas; a cabaret artist Eline Oreo; a magician and telepath Sidney Richards; Troupe Montrose a group of acrobats an Italian dance troupe Les Casettas; two clowns named Pito and Chocolate; and many others. Notably the programming also includes a heavy rotation of short and feature films such as La Electricidad Liquida 1907; El Inagarrables Pick Pocket 1908; Victima de la Ciencia 1907; En Chine: Voyage sur le Canal Impérial 1908; and Venganza del Dervich 1907. The playbill for Thursday July 16 with its headline and date in red proclaims the debut of Trouppe Merodia a seven-person group of acrobats and cyclists as well as the Cuban premiere of a film titled La Caza de Oso The Bear Hunt.

The theater was closed by hurricane damage in 1926 but reopened as a cinema in 1935 and in the following years became known as the "Cathedral of Spanish Cinema." The building again fell into disuse and disrepair in the decades following the Cuban Revolution but was restored in 2008. A very interesting group that gives a great sense of day-to-day operations at one of Cuba's most important and historic theaters. Moises V. Codina unknown

Under the Patronage of the Borough Members henry edwards esq. m.p. and c.i.t. hambro esq. m.p. On Thursday Eve. September 2nd 1869 The performances will commence with the celebrated Comedy entitled. The wonderful woman!
Weymouth: Jeffery Brothers Dramatic Printers 1869. Single leaf broadside. Lightly browned and scuffed with chipping and marginal tears to edges and corners. An unrecorded Victorian playbill advertising an evening's entertainment at the Theatre Royal Weymouth beginning with English playwright Charles Dance's 1794-1863 two-act comic drama The Wonderful Woman! 1849. Notably the Charles Dickens museum holds an acting copy of Dance's farce once owned by the great novelist; it appears Dickens an associate of the dramatist and fellow member of the Garrick Club had been involved in an earlier production of The Wonderful Woman! himself. The Theatre Royal Weymouth opened on St Nicholas Street in the early nineteenth century and remained in business until the 1960s being demolished in 1968. It was at one point operated by the father of Ernest Wheeler the first independent manager of the Brighton Pavilion. . Dimensions 200 x 500 mm. Jeffery Brothers, Dramatic Printers unknown
