People in Victorian style. The sheets are in good condition some light browning.

40th Infantry Division, Pacific Theatre
40th US Infantry Division's Photo Album Depicting their Grisly Campaign Against the Japanese Through the Philippines and New Guinea
The 40th Infantry Division Overseas photo album depicting their brutal hard-fought slog in the Pacific Theater during World War II with campaigns in New Guinea New Britain and the Philippines. An extraordinary photo album consisting of 200 original black-and-white photographs with each photograph sequentially numbered in white ink at the bottom right corner corresponding to a brief description in the index.
The album opens with a powerful image of uniformed female Red Cross workers wearing turbans as they disembark en masse from a landing craft met by shirtless GIs a rare visual testimony to the critical but underrepresented role of American women in rear-echelon and medical support roles during the Pacific campaigns Photo 127. Subsequent photos reveal amphibious landings and beachhead operations Photos 129 131 an aerial view of a ruined church and town in Luzon Photo 132 and dramatic images of warfare—from tank and artillery operations Photo 147 to men firing mounted machine guns over jungle valleys Photo 148.

This album does not shy away from the brutal nature of the Pacific theater. Images 152 through 154 depict the bodies of slain Japanese soldiers some in grotesquely contorted postures underscoring the ferocity of jungle fighting and the deep animosities that characterized this theater. Photo 161 is a rare and important printed map showing Japanese tunnel and cave fortifications in the Zambales Mountains a key detail for understanding the terrain and enemy tactics faced by the 40th. Combat engineering and logistics are well represented including scenes of ship unloading Photos 166-167 a Filipino guerrilla parade through an urban street Photos 174-175 and the massing of Filipino porters and local civilians who supported the campaign Photos 179-180 189.

Weaponry and vehicles are heavily featured. Multiple photos show M4 Sherman tanks howitzers in action Photos 190 244 and soldiers operating field artillery and mortars. The terrain from steep hill combat Photos 147 148 150 to devastated towns Photo 135 contextualizes the military strategy and hardships endured. Crucially the album includes a photograph of African American soldiers with scout dogs in the jungle Photo 142 a potent reminder of the segregated but active service roles played by Black troops. A particularly sobering photo 172 captures a Japanese proclamation threatening death to civilians caught aiding the resistance—a stark witness to the occupation's psychological warfare.

The album ends with a compelling mix of camaraderie and daily life including mess tents tent cities amid palms Photos 212 interactions with indigenous peoples Photo 222 and recovered POWs Photo 237. These images humanize the soldiers while providing a comprehensive visual narrative of the 40th Division's Pacific service. Well-preserved and historically significant this album is a vital resource for scholars of World War II Pacific combat and the racial gendered and geopolitical complexities of the U.S. war effort. Very good condition overall. unknown

LGBTQ, Theatre
Archive of LGBTQ Theatre and Performance Programs 1950s–1980s
LGBTQTheatre Archive of four programs documenting LGBTQ theatre and performance art from the late 1950s to 80s. These performances showcase the experimental camp and politically charged works that defined queer performance culture. These materials highlight the subversive nature of LGBTQ theatre from Charles Ludlam’s Ridiculous Theatrical Company to performance art grappling with AIDS and queer identity. At a time when mainstream theatre largely excluded LGBTQ voices these productions carved out spaces for self-expression satire and cultural resistance.

1 T.C. Jones' "Mask and Gown". Playbill for the John Golden Theatre 1957. Program for "Mask and Gown" a Broadway review by popular mid-century drag performer T.C. Jones. As part of the revue Jones impersonated a host of female stars including Bette Davis Tallulah Bankhead Mae West Judy Holliday Marilyn Monroe Katharine Hepburn and Ethel Merman and was noted for his exceptional talent as an actor and comedian. Jones was lauded in Time Magazine at "probably the best female impersonator since vaudeville's late famed Julian Eltinge".

2 Charles Ludlam's "Camille: A Tearjerker". Ridiculous Theatrical Company 1973. Program for Camille: A Tearjerker Charles Ludlam’s camp adaptation of La Dame aux Camélias performed by the Ridiculous Theatrical Company at the Evergreen Theatre. Ludlam a pioneer of queer theatre was known for his absurdist gender-bending performances and this production exemplifies his signature blend of parody and pathos. Starring Ludlam himself as Marguerite Gautier the play satirizes 19th-century melodrama while challenging gender norms through drag and exaggerated theatricality. The Ridiculous Theatrical Company was one of the most influential LGBTQ theatre troupes of the era using humor and spectacle to critique heteronormativity.
3 "Dames at Sea". Kimo Productions 1972. Program from a production of Dames at Sea presented by Kimo Productions a company known for its involvement in LGBTQ theatre in San Francisco. This campy Golden Age musical pastiche was a favorite among queer audiences for its over-the-top performances and nostalgic embrace of classic showbiz tropes. Advertisements for gay bars and venues within the program including Cloud 7 and Ruby’s reflect the strong ties between LGBTQ nightlife and performance spaces. The program provides insight into San Francisco’s thriving queer theatre scene which flourished in parallel with the city’s growing LGBTQ political movements.
4 "Against Nature: A Group Show of Work by Homosexual Men". Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions 1988. Exhibition catalog. A catalog from the Against Nature exhibition at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions LACE curated by Dennis Cooper and Richard Hawkins. Featuring works by artists such as Vaginal Davis Gary Indiana and Kevin Killian the show explored the intersections of queer sexuality art and the AIDS crisis. The catalog includes essays scripts and visual documentation situating the exhibition within the broader discourse of queer resistance and artistic response to the epidemic. With references to Kenneth Anger Jean Genet and William Burroughs the curators frame the show as an extension of transgressive queer aesthetics.

This collection documents the evolution of LGBTQ theatre and performance art in the late 20th century from the absurdist camp of the Ridiculous Theatrical Company to politically charged performance art responding to the AIDS crisis. These productions created spaces for queer storytelling at a time when LGBTQ representation in mainstream theatre was virtually nonexistent. A rare and historically significant archive of LGBTQ performing arts ephemera. unknown

African American, Theatre
Black Theatre in Atlanta Photo Archive 1970s
African AmericanTheatre Black Theatre Production Archive ca. 1970s. Three silver gelatin prints. Each approx. 5 x 7 in. Photographer: Paul Buckholdt Atlanta Georgia. An evocative photographic archive capturing Black stage performance in mid-century Atlanta these three images—Circa 1970s—offer a rare and powerful visual document of regional Black theater. Shot by Atlanta-based photographer Paul Buckholdt the photographs document an ensemble of African American actors engaged in emotionally intense and physically expressive performances. The productions are unidentified but exhibit hallmarks of experimental and socially conscious theater with strong visual affinities to works influenced by the Black Arts Movement and Southern community theater traditions. The photographs appear to be of different productions but share some of the same actors possibly a repertory cast. The first photograph depicts a barefoot actor at center draped in classical robes surrounded by fellow performers in matching garments adopting stylized poses of deference or resistance—suggestive of ritual theater potentially a mythic drama. The second image features a domestic interior: a woman in a plaid dress is caught in a moment of confrontation flanked by two men—one seated behind a wooden chest the other looming behind her—capturing a charged tableau of familial or communal tension. The third image shows a five-man cast in a living room set gathered around a piano and seated furniture the action centered on a standing figure in suspenders gesturing emphatically suggesting a naturalistic setting with underlying political or intergenerational themes. Faint discoloration marks to two prints otherwise clear and well preserved. Overall very good condition. This small but significant archive offers an uncommon glimpse into Black theatrical productions in the American South presenting a visual record of cultural expression identity and resistance staged before predominantly local audiences. unknown

Black Soldiers in the air force in Hawaii Japan and Guam in the 1940s
Racially integrated group of American soldiers archive of photographs in postwar Japan Hawaii and Guam before the 1948 Truman Executive Order 9981 desegrating the arm forces. This archive includes 31 black and white silver gelatin photographs measuring approximately 3.5" x 4.5". Most dated 1946. Many photos' identifying features are captioned by hand on verso. Locations include most prominently Hickam Field the airstrip adjacent to Pearl Harbor Harmon Field in Guam postwar Tokyo where we can see the Hibiya Hall as well as landscape shots in places such as Nevadan desert. There are many images of military bases and some of soldiers. One photo of a black soldier in a tropical setting holding a Thompson submachine gun and another photo shows a group of three black troops in front of the Senior Petty Officers club likely on base in Hawaii. In another photo we can see down the wing of a Douglas C-54 Skymaster a four-engined transport aircraft used by the United States Army Air Forces in World War II and the Korean War and the Boeing B-29 Superfortress. The soldier who assembled this archive likely belonged to the Air Transport Command of which the C-54 was a flagship aircraft The photo of the B-29 was taken on Kwajalein Atoll one of the many thin sand bars in the middle of the South Pacific that the US and Japan battled over to establish a base of operations for their air and sea fleets. There are several shots of postwar Tokyo primarily taken at the street level. This archive gives a look into the early postwar days and both the black and white soldiers involved in the aftermath of the war and the occupation of Japan. Very good condition overall. unknown

Illustrated unbound pamphlet wrapper folded with toning and some soiling along edge on recto two spots on verso and small tear near center at edge of page on verso; two typescript leaves folded in: Anna Cora Mowatt's prologue to Fashion and Count Jolimaitre prologue from the Provincetown Player's production; a typescript leaf with a subscription handbill laid in; overall a very good copy of a scarce program and novel piece of New York and theatre history. Single leaf wrapper folded; two typescript leaves; one handbill. 4to. The Greenwich Village Theatre playhouse opened on November 15 1917 on Sheridan Square at Christopher Street where W. 4th Street and 7th Avenue meet and was designed by Herman Lee Meader in a Dutch Colonial style. Actor Frank Conroy was integral in its development and ran the theatre. As early cinema became popular in 1921 The Greenwich started showing films between play engagements. The theatre caused controversy with some residents of Greenwich Village who took offense at the Bohemian lifestyles the space cultivated and promoted and many complaints were lobbied against it over incidents such as a "lewd poster" for an Audrey Munson film Heedless Moths.

In May 1926 the theater management announced that it had merged with the Actors' Theatre. The name Actors' Theatre was retained and while its permanent home had not been decided upon the announcement made one thing clear: "It will not be the Greenwich Village."

In January 1928 N. Brewster Morse signed a five-year lease with owner Marguerite A. Barker. Marguerite Abbott Barker b.1893 - d.1930 was a woman of wealth through her father who was president of Eastman Kodak. She was very active in the Greenwich Village theatre scene and hoped to provide a more experimental approach to the theatre experience that included "musical dramatic and motion picture features with a change of program every two weeks." In the lounge area art exhibitions were to be held "where tea coffee and cigarettes will be served during the intermissions." Among the first films screened was Paul Fejos's The Last Moment described by one critic as an "impressionistic picture." She intended to show "unusual films at popular prices" beginning on April 9 1928.

Fashion was the first play produced by a woman playwright Anna Cora Mowatt in 1845 and revived by the Provincetown Players the original Players included George Cram Cook Susan Glaspell Eugene O'Neill John Reed Louise Bryant Floyd Dell Ida Rauh Edna St. Vincent Millay and Djuna Barnes who maintained residence The Provincetown Playhouse at 133 MacDougal Street. This production for The Greenwich Village Theatre ran from April to July 1924 and in the program here states Eugene O'Neill among it's directors.

On February 4 1930 The New York Times announced "Demolition of the Greenwich Village Theatre on the northwest corner of Christopher and Fourth Streets.will begin early in March." The article explained that developers George and Edward Blum had filed plans for a 19-story apartment building the tallest in Greenwich Village. The demolished theater was replaced with the two-story Art Deco style Stewarts Cafeteria building that survives significantly altered at street level. unknown
