The set is offered here in simply decorated but elegant bindings produced by the fine Edinburgh workshop of Andrew Grieve using the highest quality materials. Grieve was a first-rate binder but he is best known as the teacher of Charles McLeish who worked 16 years for the exacting Cobden-Sanderson as finisher at the Doves Bindery. Under the stage name "Molière" actor and playwright Jean-Baptiste Poquelin 1622-73 penned and produced satirical plays--many of which caused considerable scandal--at the Parisian theater now known as the Comédie Française. According to Britannica "the actor in him influenced his writing since he wrote at speed what he could most naturally act. . . . His characters are imagined as excitable and excited to the point of incoherence. He sacrifices plot to drama vivacity a sense of life. He is a classical writer yet he is ready to defy all rules of writing." The present collection contains the masterworks "Tartuffe" "The Misanthrope" and "The Bourgeois Gentleman" as well as the scandalous "School for Wives" and lesser-known works--33 plays in all. A scene from each of the plays is depicted in the etchings by the talented and prolific illustrator Lalauze who also contributed a portrait of the playwright. While French in content and with a text in English the present set is Scottish in production and provenance. Translator Henri van Laun 1820-96 was a French master at Edinburgh Academy who was encouraged to undertake this translation into English by his acquaintances among that city's intelligentsia. The books were printed in Edinburgh and bound there probably for former owner Andrew Smith an Edinburgh brewer and bibliophile. W. Paterson unknown

Cohen-de Ricci 716-19; Furstenberg 109; Lewine 363; Tchemerzine VIII 360; Brunet III 1798-99. ◆A touch of rubbing to joints and extremities one leaf with three-inch closed tear into text no loss other trivial imperfections in the text but A VERY ATTRACTIVE SET UNUSUALLY BRIGHT FRESH AND CLEAN INTERNALLY and with the engravings richly impressed.<br/> <br/> This is a handsomely bound set of what Lewine calls a "remarkable" edition both "for the type and for the beauty of the illustrations." In addition to the extensive learned commentary by French playwright Antoine Bret our copy is enhanced with lively plates illustrating scenes by one of the greatest illustrators of the day Moreau le jeune 1741-1814. According to the Getty Museum publishers sought out Moreau "for his powers of observation and ability to capture nuances of gesture pose and light." Ray says that the best work by Moreau "showed him to be the equal of the established rococo masters Boucher Eisen and Gravelot" and that in his heyday "he carried all before him." According to Furstenberg our "Molière is rightly considered one of the masterpieces of illustration in the eighteenth century." And Tchemerzine considers the present edition with the additional pages numbered 66-67 and 80-81 and with signatures very clear on the plates "L'Avare" and "Le Sicilien ou l'amour peintre" the best version of this beautifully illustrated Molière. Under the stage name "Molière" actor and playwright Jean-Baptist Poquelin 1622-73 penned and produced satirical plays--many of which caused considerable scandal--at the Parisian theater now known as the Comédie Française. Former owner Rowland Thomas Baring 2nd Earl of Cromer 1877-1953 was a British soldier and diplomat who served as Lord Chamberlain--the most senior official in the Royal Household of the United Kingdom--from 1922 to 1938 a period that included one of the monarchy's greatest crises the abdication of Edward VIII. Ownership of our set would have made sense for him since one of his duties as Lord Chamberlain was deciding which plays would be allowed to be performed in Britain. Paris France circa 1880-1899. 1880-1899. Fair. - Quarto 14 inches high by 10-3/4 inches wide. Softcover bound in printed tan wraps titled in gilt on the front cover identified as "Partition Orchestre" in gilt along the top left and with the Comedie-Francaise's 1680 dated stamp on the front cover. "Partition Orchestre" is underlined in red graphite at the top of the front cover. The top and bottom edges to the soiled covers are chipped with tears to the top corner of the front cover and a piece out from the top corner of the rear. The front cover is nearly detached with tears along the spine and the rear cover is glued to the last blank leaf. Title plus 98 pages printed on lined music paper with most sheets stamped "Comedie Francaise 1680". The text is also printed in the appropriate parts of the score. The text block is shaken. There is occasional light soiling with signs of early worming to the top corner of the last 2 leaves. Good in a fair binding. <p>Titled: "Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme. Partition d'Orchestre. J.B. Lulli" on the title page.<p>This copy of the score was evidently prepared for a performance as there are numerous pencil notes throughout.<p>Laurent Leon 1835-1913 was the music director at the Comedie Francaise Paris from 1871 to 1913.<p>The parts of the score are as follows:<p>Overture. Pp. 1-8<p>Marche. Pp. 9-10. At the head of page 9 is printed "Reconstituee par L. Leon Chef d'orchestre de la comedie francaise conforme a la reprise de la Comedie Francaise 1880".<p>Act 1 No. 1: La Musicienne. Pp. 11-14; No. 2: Chanson de Jeanneton; P. 15. No. 3: Recits et Trio. Pp. 16-35; No. 4: Entre de Ballet. Le Maitre a danser. Pp.36-44.<p>Act 2. No. 5: Menuet du Maitre a danser. Pp. 45-48; No. 6: Air des garcons tailleurs. Pp. 49-50; No. 7: Gavotte. The music of Rameau substituted for that of Lully is his popular work "Le Tambourin".<p>Act 3 No. 9: Air a Boire. Pp. 57-66. Signed by the translator and the illustrator on the colophon. In the prospectus the Arion Press publisher Andrew Hoyem describes how he came to select Tartuffe to be published by his press. He wrote to the noted poet and translator Richard Wilbur to ask him whether the press could use his translation of this play. Wilbur wrote a newly revised introduction for this edition. Richard Wilbur 1921 - 2017was an American poet and literary translator. One of the foremost poets of his generation Wilbur's work often employing rhyme and composed primarily in traditional forms was marked by its wit charm and gentlemanly elegance. Horem ran into William Hamilton at a party in Napa and thought that he might be an unusual but apt choice to do the illustrations. Hamilton 1939 - 2916 was an American cartoonist and playwright. He was most closely associated with the magazine The New Yorker. His drawing style was instantly recognizable and inimitable. Wikipedia Bound in a burgundy moiré satin and stamped in gold with titling on the front cover and spine. Printed in Van Dijck type on Arches French mouldmade paper. With a protective acetate cover. San Francisco: The Arion Press 2004. Limited Edition. Hardcover. New. Hamilton William. Folio 14 7/9" by 11" 120 pages. The type is 16-point Van Dijck in Monotype composition by Mackenzie & Harris for the text with larger sizes handset for display and an ornamental type Fontanesi for the title an initial letter and act numbers. The names of characters are separated from the dialogue by a wavy rule. The rule running heads folios decorative type and speeches repeated in larger type beneath the illustrations are printed in burgundy ink. The illustrations were printed from photopolymer plates. The paper is Arches a French mould-made sheet. The binding done in-house is hand-sewn in full burgundy moiré satin with gold titling on the spine and front cover and a protective mylar jacket. Edition of 300 numbered copies plus 26 lettered copies hors de commerce signed by the translator and illustrator. The course to publication of this book took many turns. It was first suggested by our literary agent Fred Hill who put Hoyem in touch with his friend Brian Bedford a distinguished actor who specializes in Molière comedies. <br /> <br /> Photographs of a current production of "Tartuffe" proved impossible to obtain as illustrations. While waiting for another idea for the art Hoyem got in touch with the poet Richard Wilbur who had made an excellent translation of the play in rhymed verse and obtained permission to use it. Then William Hamilton the "New Yorker" cartoonist came to mind. Hoyem had met Hamilton in 1978 and admired his liquid line and quick capturing of character and expression in his send-ups of WASPs. But could he do period costumes Hamilton made seven charming drawings with the main characters in period dress and the servants in modern dress. <br /> <br /> To celebrate the publication the Arion staff presented a staged reading from the play directed by veteran actress and director Joy Carlin. 2 parties en un volume petit in-8, plein veau brun de l'époque, dos à 5 nerfs guillochés or orné de compartiments cloisonnés et fleuronnés, pièce de titre de maroquin rouge, doubles filets à froid en encadrement des plats, roulette dorée sur les coupes, tranches mouchetées rouges, (1) f., (4), 132 p. et (1) f., (2), 190 p. Edition originale de ce volume divisé en deux parties. En 1694, Boursault publia en tête de son théâtre une dissertation en faveur de la "comédie", appuyée de l'approbation motivée d'un religieux, le père Caffaro. Ce fut l’occasion d’une querelle qui s’envenima au point d’être portée devant les docteurs de la Sorbonne en décembre 1693. Leur délibération, qui figure en première partie de ce volume, fut sans appel: les comédiens sont "en état de péché mortel", quant aux spectateurs "quoiqu’ils ne soient pas si coupables que les comédiens, c’est un péché en matière importante de sorte qu’on doit leur refuser l’absolution". Dans la deuxième partie, l’abbé Laurent Pégurier commente et appuie la décision de la Sorbonne. Bossuet se mêla de la partie et le P. Caffaro dut finalement se rétracter publiquement. L’affaire s’inscrit dans la querelle des Anciens et des Modernes (le talent de Molière, de Corneille et de Boursault est opposé aux horreurs des pantomimes antiques et des combats de gladiateurs).
