MOLIERE.
The Works
London: John Watts 1739. The master of French comedy First complete English translation of Molière's collected works with the original French text printed on the opposite page. This influential translation made by the English naturalist Henry Baker the playwright James Miller and the schoolmaster Martin Clare "remains one of the most sober and faithful" Findlay p. 111 and was reprinted numerous times. During 14 years of activity as an actor and playwright in Paris Molière 1622-1673 transformed French comedy through use of an intensely physical comic method which has "little recourse to technical resources and gives full scope to the prowess of the actor" Barham & Brandon p. 757. Molière's work allowed French farce to become "a satiric commentary on the society of his time and a penetrating exploration of eternal human foibles and obsessive attitudes of mind. In his hands their absurdity never ceases to amuse" ibid. p. 757. This publication "more complete than that of 1732" trans. from Brunet III 1802 expands Watts's previous Select Comedies 1732 with the addition of 14 more plays a famous life of the author by the French playwright Jean-Louis-Ignace de La Serre and a new dedication. The illustrations appropriately placed at the beginning of every comedy were designed by Hogarth Coypel Rysbeck Boucher Hambelton Dandrige and Van der Gucht. 10 vols duodecimo 163 x 93 mm. Portrait frontispiece in vol. I and 31 engraved plates. Contemporary calf spines with raised bands compartments ruled in gilt red morocco lettering-pieces and brown calf numbering-pieces covers bordered with a double gilt fillet blue silk bookmarkers. 19th-century ownership stamp of Armand Harembert possibly the French medical author to front free endpaper of vol. III; vol. X with upper margin of front free endpaper clipped to remove early ownership inscription closed tear to rear endpaper. Extremities rubbed with some minor peripheral loss to leather occasional spots of worming to tender joints and inner hinges book blocks remaining firm occasional light offsetting and sporadic faint marks to contents overall remarkably crisp and clean. An attractive set presenting well in a contemporary binding. Lowndes VI p. 1582; Brunet III p. 1802. M. Barham & J. R. Brandon The Cambridge Guide to Theatre 1995; B. Findlay Frae Ither Tongues: Essays on Modern Translations Into Scots 2004. hardcover

Par la Troupe du Roy; La Gloire du Dome du Val-De-Grace. Poe'me sur la Peinture de Monsieur Mignart. Par Mr. de Moliere. en l'année 1669.

Of the many early publications of Moliere's complete works theonly compilation that contains these works in volume four is Les Oeuvres de Monsieur de Moliere Paris chez Denys T hierry Claude Barbin et Pierre T rabouillet MDC.LC/KXYI 1682. However the three engraved frontispieces are somewhat modestly executed unlike those originally signed by Pierre Brissart and Jean Sauvé fl. 1660-1691 in the known J 682 edition leading us to suppose that our copy is a contrefacon. The texts of the plays and poem follow the rst editions of each work. Jean-Baptiste Poquelin was a lawy r in Orléans before he discovered his life-long vocation in the theatre. He founded a troupe called de L'Illustre Thédtre assumed the name Moliére and travelled throughout France performing his plays which are still universally appreciated for their satirical humour. The bookplate by French engraver Isidore-Stanislas-Henri Helman 1743 - c.1809 indicates provenance of the family of French novelist Marguerite Yourcenar 1903-1987 whose nom-deplume is an anagram of Crayencour. Mme. Yourcenar a well-
respected member of the Academie franeaise spent her later years in Maine. Np unknown

I-38-E-7 unknown
