Today counter-insurgency is a vital part of a professional soldier's education - conventional wars have been few since 1945 but guerrilla warfare predominates around the world. Modern counter-insurgency is a direct reaction to the emergence of modern forms of guerrilla warfare as practised by such famed revolutionaries as Mao Tse-tung and Che Guevara. Yet Mao formulated his theories in the 1930s and modern guerrillas follow the examples of their precursors of the 1920s and 1930s in terms of harnessing guerrilla tactics to the pursuit of overtly political ends. The period between 1900 and 1945 - a time of transition when guerrilla warfare began to assume its modern characteristics - was as crucial for the development of counterinsurgency as it was for guerrilla warfare. The roots of the irregular wars being fought today in almost all quarters of the globe can be traced back to this period when armies first came to recognise the new challenge posed by politically motivated insurgency. The evolution of doctrines to meet that challenge is the subject of this book which traces counter-insurgency techniques from the expansion of the colonial empires in the late nineteenth century through to the emergence of the new insurgency in the Second World War. Six essays written by members of the teaching staff at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst cover the British French German Soviet United States and Far Eastern experiences. Many of the campaigns and methods of fighting described will be unfamiliar to the modern reader for the subject has not previously been published in any form beyond brief histories of guerrilla warfare which have only touched upon the guerrillas of the 1920s and 1930s in passing. The Vietnam War also known as the Second Indochina War and in Vietnam as the Resistance War Against America or simply the American War was a conflict that occurred in Vietnam Laos and Cambodia from 1 November 1955 to the fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975 with U.S. involvement ending in 1973. It was the second of the Indochina Wars and was officially fought between North Vietnam and the government of South Vietnam. The North Vietnamese army was supported by the Soviet Union China and other communist allies; the South Vietnamese army was supported by the United States South Korea the Philippines Australia Thailand and other anti-communist allies. The war is considered a Cold War-era proxy war by some US perspectives. The war would last approximately 19 years and would also form the Laotian Civil War as well as the Cambodian Civil War which resulted in all 3 countries becoming communist states in 1975.
