‎"CLEMENT, KRASS.‎

‎Byen bag regnen. Fotografier fra København. [The City behind the Rain. Photographs from Copenhagen].‎

‎[Copenhagen, 1987]. Queer 4to. Original dark grey wrappers. Very slight sunning to spine and a tiny nick to upper part of front wrapper. An 1988-inscription to front free end-paper. A very small oval stamp and two small spots to title-page, otherwise internally near mint. 53, (4, -index) pp., containing 128 full-page b/w photographs.‎

‎The uncommon first edition of Krass Clement's fourth book, being one of the most sought-after of his works. The renowned Danish photographer Krass Clement (born in Copehagen 1946) counts as one of the most esteemed Danish photographers, and his ""Byen bag Regnen"" as one of the most popular Danish photography-books ever printed. Clement's interest in photography developed already in his childhood, and he began photographing as early as the late 50'ies. He was educated as a film-director but soon turned professionally to still photography. His first book, Skygger af øjeblikke (Shadows of the Moment), appeared in 1978, followed by Det tavse land (The Silent Land) from 1981 and Gentagelsens fest (The Party of Repetition) from 1984, before his great work on Copenhagen, ""The City Behind the Rain"", appeared in 1887, presenting his magnificent melancholic, but also humorous and inspiring photographs from the 1960'ies and 80'ies of different aspects of Copenhagen and Copenhageners. His work, often presented in book-form, his favourite medium, is considered highly inspiring and poetical, in spite of their melancholic character, which makes them oddly compelling. His social-realist portrayal of Copenhagen in the 60'ies and 80'ies is very different from other contemporary works, and his critical but still sympathetic approach, with a sharp eye for the humorous, makes it both lively and of great artistic value. Clement is the first artist photographer to receive a lifelong disbursement from The State Art Foundation, and his works are displayed at both MOMA and the National Library in Paris.‎

‎"DAHLBERG (DAHLBERGH), ERIK.‎

‎Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna. 3 parts (all). - [THE LARGEST AND MOST SUMPTUOUS SCANDINAVIAN TOPOGRAPHICAL WORK]‎

‎(Stockholm, publication date is unclear, but commission to the work was granted in 1661. ca. 1661 - 1715) Folio (370 x 260 mm). 3 parts bound entirely uncut in 2 nice uniform red half calf bindings from ca. 1800 with gilt lettering and ornamentation to spines. Wear to edges of boards and small repair to lower compartment on vol II/III. 5 plates with marginal repairs and 1 plate with small closed hole (Not renewed margins as is often an indication of a later issue). Very light occasional marginal browning. An overall very nice uncut set in vertical folios as intended by Dahlberg.13, (1) pp. of Index. 356 etched and engraved plates - the list of plates at the beginning calls for 352, but numbers ""46"" in vol. II and ""38"" in vol. III each consist of two separate plates plus 1 extra plate (consisting of two plates) in the end of vol. III showing Templum Ulricæ, the Swedish church in London. Thus complete (+1 extra). Plates by various engravers including J. van den Aveele, Willem Swidde, Jean Marot, Jean Le Pautre, A. Perelle, J. J. von Sandrart, and E. Reitz, most after Count Dahlberg's drawings.‎

‎Magnificent copy, entirely uncut with the additional uncalled for plate, of the largest and perhaps most sumptuous Scandinavian topographical work. The scope and extravagant character of the work was reflected in it’s printing history" In 1661, Dahlberg obtained a commission from the Swedish government to compile a pictorial archive of the country's architectural treasures. No less than 18 engravers were hired to transfer Dahlberg’s drawings to copperplates (a few of the drawings were by David Klöcker-Ehrenstrahl and Elias Brenner). After decades of transferring drawings to copperplates, 21 years were spent on completing the printing of the plates - the sheets continued to be published throughout the 18th and into the 19th century. Per Lagerlöf wrote a Latin text, but it was only partially printed and never published. ‘Suecia antiqua’ was an ambitious effort to document Sweden. The kingdom was then at the height of an aggressive expansion and very much aware that it had become a major power, primarily through its success in the Thirty Years War (1618-48) and campaigns against Denmark and Poland in the 1650s. In the course of this transformation, it took substantial new territories and sponsored many new and impressive architectural projects both at the state and the individual level, which were here presented to an international audience. Dahlberg's direct source of inspiration was the topographical publications issued by the Swiss publisher Matthäus Merian whom he had become acquainted with during his military service and studies in Germany: ”I want to produce a work on Sweden like that with which Merian honored Germany. Foreiners should see how much of greatness and beauty is to be found in our fatherland”. (Jonsson, Stormaktstid, 1992). “The compilation of architectural views emerged as a genre in the mid-sixteenth century and grew in popularity over the following two hundred years. They range widely in scope, ambition and intended purpose, with some constituting a kind of architectural monograph and others taking a regional or global focus as a form of topographical literature. Many are documentary others contain imaginary or ideal buildings. Some emphasize text others contain only a few captions. However, all have in common an attractive presentation that is not particularly technical, and would appeal to anyone with even a passing interest in architecture. It may be this easy accessibility that has often made them seem like ornaments for aristocratic libraries and largely removed from the more intellectually engaged worlds of the study and the architectural studio. With some exceptions, such as the rich works of Giovanni Battista Piranesi, they have typically been seen as early coffee table books - of limited use at the time, and important to the history of art and architecture primarily” (Kristoffer Neville, Suecia antiqua et hodierna: An Architectural Viewbook in the Eighteenth Century). Brunet V:578. Lindberg: Swedish Books 1280–1967 as no. 37.Collijn 4, 198.‎

(4), 361 (misnumbered as 353, and including blank P5), 181, (5) ff.‎

‎The rare editio princeps of one of the most beautiful and elegant of all renaissance printings, namely Estienne's magnificent volume of ""Church History"", which constitutes the first major Greek text produced by Estienne as the King's Printer in Greek and the work which marks the first appearance of a full text in the fist font of the Royal Greek types (the so-called ""grecs du roi"") - ""These cursive Greek types are universally acknowledged as the finest ever cut."" (Schreiber). This is also the first book in which appear the splendid matching initials and headpieces, which are considered ""among the best of the printed decorations used in the sixteenth century"" (Updike). In 1542, Francois I appointed Estienne his new printer in Greek, and at the same time he commissioned Claude Garamond to cut a new Greek font intended specifically to be used to print Greek books from then unpublished manuscripts in the Royal Library at Fontainebleu. The first text selected for printing by Estienne was the great ""Ecclesistical History"", which marks a new era of book printing. Garamont's new Royal Greek types, the later so famous ""grecs du Roi"", used for it, were based on the handwriting of the Cretan Angelo Vergezio's (a well-known calligrapher), with its many ligatures" the capitals were influenced by roman letters that Garamont had already cut. One of the particularities of these fonts was the introduction of accents and breathing marks, made with the use of kerned letters. Garamont's skill can clearly be seen in the ligatures and the treatment of the abbreviations. The work is very difficult to find complete. Schreiber: 77.‎

‎Les Cent Nouvelles nouvelles. 2 parts. - [THE MOST ATTRACTIVE ILLUSTRATED EDITION OF THE FIRST WORK OF LITERARY PROSE IN FRENCH]‎

‎Cologne, Pierre Gaillard, 1701. 8vo. In contemporary vellum. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Light wear and soiling to extremities. Previous owner's name (Peter Otto Rosenörn) to front free end-paper. Dampstain to inner upper margin of first half of book block. A few quires split in margin and a few plates closely trimmed, with minor loss in outer margin, otherwise internally nice and clean. (3), 397, (3), (24), 389 pp. + frontispiece and 100 etchings by Romeyn de Hooghe (included in the pagination).‎

‎First edition with Hooghe’s beautiful illustrations of this famous collection of tales modelled on Boccaccio’s Decameron. According to Brunet, two variants were published: one with text published below or above the engraving (The present copy) and one with engravings published separately. According to Brunet the former is preferable due to better printing quality. (Brunet I, 1735/1736). ""Les Cent Nouvelles Nouvelles"" stands as a cornerstone in the development of French literature and is regarded as being the first work of literary prose in French. Believed to have been composed around the 1460s at the court of Duke Philip the Good of Burgundy, this collection of tales offers a glimpse into the cultural and literary landscape of late Medieval France. The stories were collected and possibly edited by Antoine de la Sale (1385/86 – 1460/61). ""Les Cent Nouvelles Nouvelles"" were first printed by Antoine Vérard in 1486, twenty years after manuscript circulation (only one manuscript is known today). Romeyn de Hooghe (1645 - 1708), born in Amsterdam, was a multi-talented artist known for etching, drawing, painting, and sculpting. He became famous for his political caricatures of Louis XIV and propaganda prints supporting William of Orange. His work included early comic strips and illustrations for significant texts like ""Hieroglyphica of Merkbeelden der oude volkeren"" (1735).Throughout his career, de Hooghe produced over 3500 prints and adorned city maps with decorative borders. He was praised for inventive compositions in engravings and painted large panels for public and private spaces. Despite acclaim, he faced criticism later in life for his controversial subjects and lifestyle. Historian Simon Schama lauded de Hooghe as the first great modern graphic satirist, highlighting his role in portraying conflicts between William III and Louis XIV as struggles for liberty against religious despotism. ‎""A uncommon and magnificent edition: it has a number of curious wood-cuts, and the typography is exceedingly splendid. The connesseur will discover many singular traits in the engravings - the bustle of a battle and solemnity of a marsh are sometinmes well represented - but he will smile on finding cannons and bombs indtroduced in a Roman siege. The text is printed with frequent contractions, but, from what I have perused, it is not incorrect. The engravings, and general splendour of the volume, will always render it a great acquisition to the library of the curious."" (Dibdin II, p. 166).Jost (Ammon) Amman (1539 - 1591) was a Swiss artist, celebrated chiefly for his woodcuts, done mainly for book illustrations. ""Amman was born in Zurich, the son of a professor of Classics and Logic. He was himself well-educated. Little of his personal history is known beyond the fact that he moved to Nuremberg in 1560, where he continued to reside until his death in March 1591. He worked initially with Virgil Solis, then a leading producer of book illustrations. His productiveness was very remarkable, as may be gathered from the statement of one of his pupils, that the drawings he made during a period of four years would have filled a hay wagon. A large number of his original drawings are in the Berlin print room. About 1,500 prints are attributed to him. He was one of the last major producers of woodcuts for books, as during his career engravings were gradually taking over that role."" (Wikipedia).Adams L 1345.‎

‎Scarce first edition of this seminal production, which constitutes the first - and most significant - production of the first state institute for race biology in the world. ""It is one of the great paradoxes of the history of eugenics that the category of ""race"" - notoriously fuzzy anyway - was no less important to the eugenic ideas and practices developing within states that experienced little actual racial diversity. In the Swedish context, racial biology and anthropology thus exercised considerable influence, especially in the first decades of the twentieth century, when eugenicists promoted the idea of a distinct Nordic race, as Broberg and Tydén have established. The first state Institute for Race Biology in the world was founded in Uppsala in 1922, having been voted by the Swedish parliament and ratified by the king. Directed by Herman Lundborg (1868-1943), Sweden's most prominent eugenic scientist at the time, one of its first tasks was mapping the racial features of the Swedish nation. On the basis of measuring the physical attributes of 100,000 Swedes - two-thirds of whom were army recruits and a significant part of the remainder, prison inmates - ""The Racial Chararcter of the Swedish Nation"" appeared in 1926 to international acclaim.""Thus started the first officially planned scientific state strategy to map out the superior Nordic race, to promote and improve racial purity and to depict the dangers of miscegenation. After this first (massive) production, more attempts to produce full inventories of ""foreign"" races were done in the 1930'ies, during which time institutes for eugenic research and promotion were also established in Central America and Africa, due to the efforts of Lundborg, in collaboration with Samuel Holmes and Charles Davenport. The scientific mapping of the ideal pure race, with the ultimate goal of preparing and initiating practical reforms to improve the white race, found, as we all know too well, great resonance all over Europe, in the 30'ies and 40'ies. With the present work, Lundborg had founded what was considered an important scientific and patriotic task that came to have the greatest of consequences for the peoples of Europe.‎

‎"MENNIE, DONALD.‎

‎The Pageant of Peking Comprising Sixty-Six Vandyck Photogravures of Peking and Environs from Photographs by Donald Mennie with an introduction by Putnam Weale Descriptive Notes by S. Couling.‎

‎Shanghai, A.S. Watson, 1922. Folio (390 x 300 mm). In the original blue silke covered binding with gilt lettering and decoration to front board. Spine slightly faded. Internally fine and clean, an overall very nice copy. (8), 40 pp. + 66 photogravures tipped into recto of each page with caption on verso.‎

‎Third edition of this fine work with sixty-six fine photogravure plates documenting the twilight of imperial China. It is the most iconic of Donald Mennie's early photobooks and a cornerstone of Western visual records of early 20th-century Beijing Although born and raised in Golspie, Scotland, Donald Mennie (1875–1944) spent the majority of his life in China, arriving around 1899. Trained as a chemist he rose to become Managing Director of the Shanghai branch of A.S. Watson & Co., a firm that by the 1930s was also a dealer in photographic materials. His photographic work, inspired by the Pictorialist style, emphasized mood and composition over mere documentation, making his books highly desirable as both artistic and historical records. From 1914 Mennie traveled widely across China, producing popular photo-books that include ""China by Land and Water"", ""Picturesque China"", and his magnum opus, The Grandeur of the Gorges (1926). The Pageant of Peking remains one of his most sought-after works for its focus on Beijing at a pivotal historical moment - before the empire gave way to modern transformation. This edition is accompanied by an introduction by Putnam Weale (B.L. Simpson) and descriptive notes by S. Couling Tragically Mennie’s life ended in Japanese captivity during WWII, dying in a Shanghai internment center in 1944.‎

‎Shores of the Polar Sea. A Narrative of the Arctic Expedition of 1875-76. Illustrated with Sixteen Chromo=Lithographs and numerous Engravings from Drawings made on the Spot by the Author.‎

‎First edition. ""It is believed by both Artist and Publishers that a much fuller and more vivid idea of Arctic scenery can be produced by careful chromo-lithographic fac-similes of the original drawings made by Dr Edward L. Moss during the Expedition, than by any rendering in black and white. The sketches are not designed to illustrate the progress of the Expedition, or any stirring events in its history, so much as the appearance of the strange and desolate country by the shores of which the ships slowly steamed, the wonderful phenomena of the sky, and the effects of light and shade produced by a midnight sun, or a mid-day moon, on the ice-bound rocks which form the scenery of the region. They are here reproduced ... in order to make them more generally accessible ... It must be added that the sketches are all the work of one hand - Dr Edward L. Moss, who served on board the Alert in the Arctic Expedition which left England on the 29th of May, 1875, and entered the Arctic regions on the 4th of July in the same year. Although the Expedition failed in reaching the Pole - which was among the sailing orders on which it started - it yet achieved results of the highest scientific and geographic value. Of what kind was the life they led - what strange experiences they gained of natural phenomena, and the freaks of light on ice and rock - the accompanying drawings illustrate with a vividness and fullness never before arrived at in sketches of Arctic life.""
