‎"RIIS, JACOB A.‎

‎How the Other Half Lives. Studies Among the Tenemants of New York. With Illustrations chiefly from Photographs taken by the Author. - [INITIATING SOCIAL REFORM]‎

‎New York, Charles Scribner's Sons, 1890. Lex 8vo. Original blue full clothWith title in blue to front board and blue and gilt lettering to spine. Spine and parts of boards lightly brownspotted. A bit of wear to capitaks and corners. But overall a very nice copy of this fairly fragile and delicate cloth binding (there is an original variant binding with cloth spine and illustrated boards, but no precidency between the bindings has been established). Internally very nice and clean. XV, (1), 304 pp. Wih numerous illustrations, most of them photographic.‎

‎First edition of this landmark work on the miserable living conditions of the poor immigrants in New York, constituting one of the very earliest - and certainly the most popular and influential - attempts at making ""the other half"", i.e. the middle and upper classes, aware of how the poor in New York actually lived. Riis's work created attention to the neglected and overseen community that was the underprivileged in New York. In the long run, the great success of the work created attention to the status, living conditions and general health of the poor, and it initiated social reform movements in all major North American cities. Furthermore, the work is regarded the very first example of ""muckraking"" journalism and was the first to extensively use halftone photographic reproductions in a book.Riis used a convincing combination of facts from Dr. Roger S. Tracy, Registrar of Vital Statistics, and his own talents as a photo journalist to make a hitherto unseen powerful description of the correlation between the high crime rate, drunkenness and reckless behavior of the poor and their lack of proper homes. The statistical facts made it a relevant and sober work and lent it enough authority to the book's claims for it to be taken serious by city official. His groundbreaking photographs confirmed the dry numbers and ""spoke directly to people's hearts"". (Pascal, ""Jacob Riis: Reporter and Reformer"", p. 87). Unlike all previously works on the living conditions of the poor, ""How the Other Half Lives"" offered concrete solutions on how to improve living condition, how to make the tenants improve their buildings, and finally how the politicians and city officials could make the appropriate and necessary juridical changes. The effect of the work was immediately seen and included: the tearing down of New York's worst tenements, sweatshops, and the reformation of the city's schools. The book led to a decade of improvements in Lower East Side conditions, with garbage collection, sewers, and indoor plumbing all following soon after. Because of the present work, Riis quickly rose to fame and in 1895 he became close friends with Theodore Roosevelt, then a New York City official, who wrote of Riis: ""Jacob Riis, whom I am tempted to call the best American I ever knew, although he was already a young man when he came hither from Denmark"". After Roosevelt became President, he wrote a tribute to Riis that started: ""Recently a man, well qualified to pass judgment, alluded to Mr. Jacob A. Riis as ""the most useful citizen of New York"". Those fellow citizens of Mr. Riis who best know his work will be most apt to agree with this statement. The countless evils which lurk in the dark corners of our civic institutions, which stalk abroad in the slums, and have their permanent abode in the crowded tenement houses, have met in Mr. Riis the most formidable opponent ever encountered by them in New York City.""The title refers to the French writer François Rabelais, who famously wrote in Pantagruel: ""one half of the world does not know how the other half lives"". As a work of journalism and of social criticism, Riis's book still stands as a truly seminal testimony to how the lower classes lived at the turn of the century. Due to this work, attention was eventually paid to them and their conditions bettered.‎

Titlepage with broad pictorial wood-cut border. (32),(2) blank,988,(20 - Register) pp. Profusely illustrated with smaller and larger wood-cut initials, and with more than 100 large, fine wood-cut engravings in the text (each ab. 11x15 cm.) by the well-known renaissance-illustrator Jost Ammon. With two traceable Danish ownerships (their names on titlepage). Studied at Sorø Academy and the University atLeyden. Author of two works.‎

‎""A uncommon and magnificent edition: it has a number of curious wood-cuts, and the typography is exceedingly splendid. The connesseur will discover many singular traits in the engravings - the bustle of a battle and solemnity of a marsh are sometinmes well represented - but he will smile on finding cannons and bombs indtroduced in a Roman siege. The text is printed with frequent contractions, but, from what I have perused, it is not incorrect. The engravings, and general splendour of the volume, will always render it a great acquisition to the library of the curious."" (Dibdin II, p. 166).Jost (Ammon) Amman (1539 - 1591) was a Swiss artist, celebrated chiefly for his woodcuts, done mainly for book illustrations. ""Amman was born in Zurich, the son of a professor of Classics and Logic. He was himself well-educated. Little of his personal history is known beyond the fact that he moved to Nuremberg in 1560, where he continued to reside until his death in March 1591. He worked initially with Virgil Solis, then a leading producer of book illustrations. His productiveness was very remarkable, as may be gathered from the statement of one of his pupils, that the drawings he made during a period of four years would have filled a hay wagon. A large number of his original drawings are in the Berlin print room. About 1,500 prints are attributed to him. He was one of the last major producers of woodcuts for books, as during his career engravings were gradually taking over that role."" (Wikipedia).Adams L 1345.‎

‎"LUNDBORG, H. & F.J. LINDERS (Edts.).‎

‎The Racial Characters of the Swedish Nation. Anthropologia Suecica MCMXXVI. Withe the collaboation of the staff of the institute and other scientists edited. - [MAPPING THE NORDIC RACE - FIRST STATE INSTITUTE FOR RACE BIOLOGY IN THE WORLD]‎

‎Stockholm, Almqvist & Wiksell, 1926. [To be distributed by Gustav Jena Fischer, etc.]. Folio. Original full cloth with gilt title to spine and brown lettering and swedish arms to front board. Gilding to spine a little worn and spine a little soiled. Inner front hinge weak. Internally very nice and clean. Stamp to title-page (Malmö stadsbibliotek). An unusually well preserved copy of this heavy, large book. XIVpp., frontispiece portrait, (1 blank leaf), 182 pp. + 5 plates, 4 of them maps. + Supplement (including tables, explanation of the tables and the plates, and plates): (1) f. (half-title), 108 pp. (1) f. (half-title) + 44 photographic plates depicting Nordic Types, Baltic types, and Lapp types. With many illustrations, maps, and diagrams in the text as well.‎

‎Scarce first edition of this seminal production, which constitutes the first - and most significant - production of the first state institute for race biology in the world. ""It is one of the great paradoxes of the history of eugenics that the category of ""race"" - notoriously fuzzy anyway - was no less important to the eugenic ideas and practices developing within states that experienced little actual racial diversity. In the Swedish context, racial biology and anthropology thus exercised considerable influence, especially in the first decades of the twentieth century, when eugenicists promoted the idea of a distinct Nordic race, as Broberg and Tydén have established. The first state Institute for Race Biology in the world was founded in Uppsala in 1922, having been voted by the Swedish parliament and ratified by the king. Directed by Herman Lundborg (1868-1943), Sweden's most prominent eugenic scientist at the time, one of its first tasks was mapping the racial features of the Swedish nation. On the basis of measuring the physical attributes of 100,000 Swedes - two-thirds of whom were army recruits and a significant part of the remainder, prison inmates - ""The Racial Chararcter of the Swedish Nation"" appeared in 1926 to international acclaim.""Thus started the first officially planned scientific state strategy to map out the superior Nordic race, to promote and improve racial purity and to depict the dangers of miscegenation. After this first (massive) production, more attempts to produce full inventories of ""foreign"" races were done in the 1930'ies, during which time institutes for eugenic research and promotion were also established in Central America and Africa, due to the efforts of Lundborg, in collaboration with Samuel Holmes and Charles Davenport. The scientific mapping of the ideal pure race, with the ultimate goal of preparing and initiating practical reforms to improve the white race, found, as we all know too well, great resonance all over Europe, in the 30'ies and 40'ies. With the present work, Lundborg had founded what was considered an important scientific and patriotic task that came to have the greatest of consequences for the peoples of Europe.‎

‎Paris, Stephanus (Estienne), 1544. Folio. Contemporary full vellum with some wear. Six raised bands to spine and large blindstamped centrepieces to boards. Capitals and upper part of back board worn and torn"" but binding still fine and solid. Some dampstaining, especially to beginning and end, though mostly marginal. Back end-paprs quite dampstained. A worn, but still nice copy with mostly bright and clean pages. Bookplate to inside of front board and old owner's inscriptions and a pasted-in catalogue-description to front free end-paper. Numerous large foliated and grotesque initials and headpieces and large woodcut printer's device on title-page (basilisk) and verso of final leaf (the so-called device 10) . (4), 361 (misnumbered as 353, and including blank P5), 181, (5) ff.‎

‎The rare editio princeps of one of the most beautiful and elegant of all renaissance printings, namely Estienne's magnificent volume of ""Church History"", which constitutes the first major Greek text produced by Estienne as the King's Printer in Greek and the work which marks the first appearance of a full text in the fist font of the Royal Greek types (the so-called ""grecs du roi"") - ""These cursive Greek types are universally acknowledged as the finest ever cut."" (Schreiber). This is also the first book in which appear the splendid matching initials and headpieces, which are considered ""among the best of the printed decorations used in the sixteenth century"" (Updike). In 1542, Francois I appointed Estienne his new printer in Greek, and at the same time he commissioned Claude Garamond to cut a new Greek font intended specifically to be used to print Greek books from then unpublished manuscripts in the Royal Library at Fontainebleu. The first text selected for printing by Estienne was the great ""Ecclesistical History"", which marks a new era of book printing. Garamont's new Royal Greek types, the later so famous ""grecs du Roi"", used for it, were based on the handwriting of the Cretan Angelo Vergezio's (a well-known calligrapher), with its many ligatures" the capitals were influenced by roman letters that Garamont had already cut. One of the particularities of these fonts was the introduction of accents and breathing marks, made with the use of kerned letters. Garamont's skill can clearly be seen in the ligatures and the treatment of the abbreviations. The work is very difficult to find complete. Schreiber: 77.‎

‎"MOSS, EDWARD L.‎

‎Shores of the Polar Sea. A Narrative of the Arctic Expedition of 1875-76. Illustrated with Sixteen Chromo=Lithographs and numerous Engravings from Drawings made on the Spot by the Author.‎

‎London, Marcus Ward & Co., 1878. Folio. (49 x 35 cm.). Orig. full pictotial cloth. Richly gilt. Spine-ends repaired. First inner hinge strenghtened. Edges gilt. Halftitle with a stamp. (1-7)8-83 pp. With 16 mounted, fine chromolithographed plates, many textillustrations, 1 map. Title-page printed in red/black. Internally clean fine.‎

‎First edition. ""It is believed by both Artist and Publishers that a much fuller and more vivid idea of Arctic scenery can be produced by careful chromo-lithographic fac-similes of the original drawings made by Dr Edward L. Moss during the Expedition, than by any rendering in black and white. The sketches are not designed to illustrate the progress of the Expedition, or any stirring events in its history, so much as the appearance of the strange and desolate country by the shores of which the ships slowly steamed, the wonderful phenomena of the sky, and the effects of light and shade produced by a midnight sun, or a mid-day moon, on the ice-bound rocks which form the scenery of the region. They are here reproduced ... in order to make them more generally accessible ... It must be added that the sketches are all the work of one hand - Dr Edward L. Moss, who served on board the Alert in the Arctic Expedition which left England on the 29th of May, 1875, and entered the Arctic regions on the 4th of July in the same year. Although the Expedition failed in reaching the Pole - which was among the sailing orders on which it started - it yet achieved results of the highest scientific and geographic value. Of what kind was the life they led - what strange experiences they gained of natural phenomena, and the freaks of light on ice and rock - the accompanying drawings illustrate with a vividness and fullness never before arrived at in sketches of Arctic life."" ‎PAOLI, PAOLO ANTONIO.‎

‎Antichita di Pozzuoli. Puteolanae antiquitates. Avanzi delle antichita esistenti a Pozzuoli, Cuma e Baja. Antiquitatum Puteolis, Cumis Balis existentium reliquiae. - [A MASTERPIECE OF 18TH CENTURY ITALIAN CHALCOGRAPHY]‎

‎(Napoli, 1768). Folio. Bound uncut in a magnificent recent sprinkled full calf pastiche-binding with seven raised bands, forming eight compartments. Two leather title-labels to spine and compartments and raised bands with gilt ornamentation. All edges of boards with blindstamped decorations. One text leaf (unnumbered, but no. 38) with small stain and one diagram with tiny hole measureing 1 cm2, both far from affecting text/plate, very light soiling to first two leaves. All in all a very fine, clean an attractive copy. Complete with 39 ff. of text [Italian and Latin in parallel columns], 69 plates of views and diagrams of which three are double page and one folded, a beautiful panorama depicting the Bay of Pozzuoli ('Veduta della Costa di Pozzuoli').‎

‎The rare first edition of Paoli's masterpiece of 18th century Italian chalcography with both text and views in beautiful copper engraved plates. The systematic documentation of classical ancient Greek and Roman ruins, many of which are here depicted for the very first time, is considered the most important eighteenth century views of Pozzuoli and its surroundings. The engravings by Giovanni Volpato, Antoine Cardon, Francesco La Marra, and Johann Dominik Fiorillo are based on drawings by local artists such as Gianbattista Natali, Tommaso Rojola, Ricciarelli and Magri. Conte Felice Gazzola commissioned the present work and when published, it was printed in very few copies only and sold for 15 Neapolitan ducats. A second edition in folio-oblong was printed in 1769.Pozzuoli, located just north of Naples, began as a Greek colony and a Roman colony was established in 194 BC. Pozzuoli (at the time named Puteoli) was the great emporium for the Alexandrian grain ships and other ships from all over the Roman world. It was also the main hub for goods exported from Campania, including blown glass, mosaics, wrought iron, and marble. The Roman naval base at nearby Misenum housed the largest naval fleet in the ancient world. It was also the site of the Roman Dictator Sulla's country villa and the place where he died in 78 BC - the ruins of many of these sights are portrayed in the present work. Paolo Antonio Paoli, president of the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome (1775-98), was a pioneering scholar and historian of the ancient civilizations of the region of Campania in southern Italy. ‎"DAHLBERG (DAHLBERGH), ERIK.‎

‎Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna. 3 parts (all). - [THE LARGEST AND MOST SUMPTUOUS SCANDINAVIAN TOPOGRAPHICAL WORK]‎

‎(Stockholm, publication date is unclear, but commission to the work was granted in 1661. ca. 1661 - 1715) Folio (370 x 260 mm). 3 parts bound entirely uncut in 2 nice uniform red half calf bindings from ca. 1800 with gilt lettering and ornamentation to spines. Wear to edges of boards and small repair to lower compartment on vol II/III. 5 plates with marginal repairs and 1 plate with small closed hole (Not renewed margins as is often an indication of a later issue). Very light occasional marginal browning. An overall very nice uncut set in vertical folios as intended by Dahlberg.13, (1) pp. of Index. 356 etched and engraved plates - the list of plates at the beginning calls for 352, but numbers ""46"" in vol. II and ""38"" in vol. III each consist of two separate plates plus 1 extra plate (consisting of two plates) in the end of vol. III showing Templum Ulricæ, the Swedish church in London. Thus complete (+1 extra). Plates by various engravers including J. van den Aveele, Willem Swidde, Jean Marot, Jean Le Pautre, A. Perelle, J. J. von Sandrart, and E. Reitz, most after Count Dahlberg's drawings.‎

‎Magnificent copy, entirely uncut with the additional uncalled for plate, of the largest and perhaps most sumptuous Scandinavian topographical work. The scope and extravagant character of the work was reflected in it’s printing history" In 1661, Dahlberg obtained a commission from the Swedish government to compile a pictorial archive of the country's architectural treasures. No less than 18 engravers were hired to transfer Dahlberg’s drawings to copperplates (a few of the drawings were by David Klöcker-Ehrenstrahl and Elias Brenner). After decades of transferring drawings to copperplates, 21 years were spent on completing the printing of the plates - the sheets continued to be published throughout the 18th and into the 19th century. Per Lagerlöf wrote a Latin text, but it was only partially printed and never published. ‘Suecia antiqua’ was an ambitious effort to document Sweden. The kingdom was then at the height of an aggressive expansion and very much aware that it had become a major power, primarily through its success in the Thirty Years War (1618-48) and campaigns against Denmark and Poland in the 1650s. In the course of this transformation, it took substantial new territories and sponsored many new and impressive architectural projects both at the state and the individual level, which were here presented to an international audience. Dahlberg's direct source of inspiration was the topographical publications issued by the Swiss publisher Matthäus Merian whom he had become acquainted with during his military service and studies in Germany: ”I want to produce a work on Sweden like that with which Merian honored Germany. Foreiners should see how much of greatness and beauty is to be found in our fatherland”. (Jonsson, Stormaktstid, 1992). “The compilation of architectural views emerged as a genre in the mid-sixteenth century and grew in popularity over the following two hundred years. They range widely in scope, ambition and intended purpose, with some constituting a kind of architectural monograph and others taking a regional or global focus as a form of topographical literature. Many are documentary others contain imaginary or ideal buildings. Some emphasize text others contain only a few captions. However, all have in common an attractive presentation that is not particularly technical, and would appeal to anyone with even a passing interest in architecture. It may be this easy accessibility that has often made them seem like ornaments for aristocratic libraries and largely removed from the more intellectually engaged worlds of the study and the architectural studio. With some exceptions, such as the rich works of Giovanni Battista Piranesi, they have typically been seen as early coffee table books - of limited use at the time, and important to the history of art and architecture primarily” (Kristoffer Neville, Suecia antiqua et hodierna: An Architectural Viewbook in the Eighteenth Century). ‎Traur-rede Welche Bey des Hochgebohrnen Herrn, Herrn Christian Güldenleu [...] Leichbegängnis, bey hoher Versamlung, auch königlicher allergnädigster Gegenwart. - [ONE OF THE MOST MAGNIFICENT OF ALL FUNERAL BOOKS]‎

‎Copenhagen, Joachim Schmitgen, 1709. Folio (398 x 260 mm). In a magnificent full brown morrocco binding with five raised bands, richly gilt spines, elaborate gilt borders to boards, inner gilt dentelles, gilt capitals and gilt ornamentation to edges of boards. All edges gilt. Binding signed by Anker Kyster. Sunning to spine and a few scratches to boards. A very nice wide margined copy. (10), 112, (11), (2), 36, (29) pp. + 7 large folded plates (including the frontispiece). Plates numbered A-F, by Andreas Reinhardt after Gottfrid Fuchs. The frontispiece was drawn by J.S. Ebert. Five of the plates bear dates, which range from 1704 to 1707. The frontispiece and plate C incorporate a portrait of Gyldenlöve. Plate A shows the casket being taken off an illuminated ship at night. Plate B, the procession through Copenhagen (4 joined sheets, 1850 mm). Plate C, closely trimmed with professional repair to inner margin, shows the laying in-state, Plate D (3 joined sheets 1470 mm) shows the funeral ceremony with the catafalque. Plate E (3 joined sheets, 1600 mm), shows the procession leaving the church with the casket. Plate F, closely trimmed with minor loss of text, shows the casket.‎

‎The very scarce first appearance of one the most magnificent of all funeral books and one of the finest examples of Danish book production in general. In a grandiose baroque-style, the work documents the funeral procession of King Christian V’s young son Christian Gyldenløve’s, Count of Samsø. The procession through Copenhagen and final burial in Church of Our Lady took place in the evening, which is why the plates were printed in dark tones. Christian Gyldenløve, Count of Samsø (1674-1703), was a Danish nobleman and military officer. He was the illegitimate son of King Christian V of Denmark and his mistress Sophie Amalie Moth. Christian Gyldenløve was born on November 28, 1674, in Copenhagen, Denmark.Gyldenløve had a military career and achieved the rank of colonel. He participated in various military campaigns and battles, including the Scanian War (1675-1679) against Sweden. He commanded his own regiment and gained a reputation as a skilled and brave officer. In addition to his military duties, Christian Gyldenløve held several noble titles. In 1698, he was appointed Count of Samsø, which is a Danish island located in the Kattegat Sea. He also held the title of Lord of Rosenborg. Tragically, Christian Gyldenløve's life was cut short at the age of 28. He died on July 16, 1703, during the Battle of Thorn (modern-day Torun) in Poland, while fighting in the service of the Polish king against the Swedish forces. His premature death was a source of sorrow for his family and the Danish court to which this lavishly printed book is a testament to. The work was printed in 275 copies. ‎MAROLLES (Michel de).‎

‎Tableaux du Temple des Muses Tirez du Cabinet de Feu Mr. Favereau. - [CLASSICAL MYTHOLOGY BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED]‎

‎Amsterdam, Abraham Wolfgank, 1676. 4to (190 x 165 mm). In contemporary marbled paper covered boards. Extremities with wear, boards with scratches, corners bumped. Missing top 5 cm of spine. Frontispiece closely trimmed with loss to upper and lower margin. Plate no. 19 with repair in outer margin, with loss of plate. Internally generally nice and clean. (18), 476, (6) pp. + 58 plates and 1 frontispiece.‎

‎Uncommon later edition – printed in Amsterdam for the first time - of Michel de Marolles' adaptations of classical fables beautifully illustrated with 58 full-page plates by Cornelis Bloemaert after Abraham van Diepenbeeck’s design depicting scenes from classical mythology and ancient fables. The prints were of exceptional quality and became an inspiration for artists and printmakers in the following decades. “In 1655 the print collector and classicist abbé Michel de Marolles (1600–81) published a book titled Tableaux du Temple des Muses (fig. 1).1 It was a folio edition illustrated with a series of engravings of 58 wellknown myths from classical antiquity, for which he wrote detailed commentaries. The prints, most of which were designed by Abraham van Diepenbeeck (1596–1675), are extraordinarily virtuosic and original for their day. Remarkably, the identity of the engraver or engravers is not known for certain. De Marolles’s publication was an international success. New editions in different languages continued appearing until well into the eighteenth century, and copies of the print series were also published. Although the engravings are still well-known, their printing history remains a little obscure. Sources relating to the patrons and artists involved are sparse. In addition, the available material has been interpreted in different ways in the past, sometimes giving rise to incorrect conclusions.” (Altena, The Tableaux du Temple des Muses) The Tableaux du Temple des Muses was protected by a 15-year privilege. In 1665 Nicolas Langlois published an edition with the illustrations only, and in 1676 Abraham Wolfgank published Le Tableaux du Temple des Muses in quarto format in Amsterdam. Brunet III, 1443: “Les beaux exemplaires ens ont peu communs”. Graesse IV, 409.‎

Previous owner's name (Peter Otto Rosenörn) to front free end-paper. Dampstain to inner upper margin of first half of book block. (3), 397, (3), (24), 389 pp. + frontispiece and 100 etchings by Romeyn de Hooghe (included in the pagination).‎

‎First edition with Hooghe’s beautiful illustrations of this famous collection of tales modelled on Boccaccio’s Decameron. According to Brunet, two variants were published: one with text published below or above the engraving (The present copy) and one with engravings published separately. According to Brunet the former is preferable due to better printing quality. (Brunet I, 1735/1736). ""Les Cent Nouvelles Nouvelles"" stands as a cornerstone in the development of French literature and is regarded as being the first work of literary prose in French. Believed to have been composed around the 1460s at the court of Duke Philip the Good of Burgundy, this collection of tales offers a glimpse into the cultural and literary landscape of late Medieval France. The stories were collected and possibly edited by Antoine de la Sale (1385/86 – 1460/61). ""Les Cent Nouvelles Nouvelles"" were first printed by Antoine Vérard in 1486, twenty years after manuscript circulation (only one manuscript is known today). Romeyn de Hooghe (1645 - 1708), born in Amsterdam, was a multi-talented artist known for etching, drawing, painting, and sculpting. He became famous for his political caricatures of Louis XIV and propaganda prints supporting William of Orange. His work included early comic strips and illustrations for significant texts like ""Hieroglyphica of Merkbeelden der oude volkeren"" (1735).Throughout his career, de Hooghe produced over 3500 prints and adorned city maps with decorative borders. He was praised for inventive compositions in engravings and painted large panels for public and private spaces. Despite acclaim, he faced criticism later in life for his controversial subjects and lifestyle. Historian Simon Schama lauded de Hooghe as the first great modern graphic satirist, highlighting his role in portraying conflicts between William III and Louis XIV as struggles for liberty against religious despotism. Brunet, II, 1735. Graesse, II, 102.‎

‎Fifth Latin edition, rarely found complete with both volumes as here, of Picinello’s magnificent and highly popular encyclopaedia of emblems - a cornerstone of emblematic literature and an essential guide for understanding the allegorical language of the Baroque era. “Picinelli’s intention was to compile a collection of brief interpretations which he wanted to have close to hand, especially on his travels as a preacher. From this collection of emblems, originally covering only four pages, the full reference work developed. The author wants the book to be understood not only figuratively as a book of the world: for him it really is the world, it contains the world in all its reality and, conversely, the whole world can be derived from it. In this he follows the interpretation of Romans 1,20 that, since the creation of the world, the invisible secrets of God can be perceived by the understanding mind through His works.” (Olms Online) Filippo Picinelli (1604 – 1679) was an Augustinian munk. Picinelli was born in Milan, Italy in 1604 and joined the Augustinian Order in 1614. He studied philosophy and theology at Cremona and Piacenza and lived in Milan. (Landwehr 480 - Not listing this edition, 1681, 1687, 1694 and 1715)‎
