‎THE TRIBULATIONS OF A CHINAMAN‎

‎1881. Translated by Ellen E. Frewer. Illustrated by L. Benett. New York: E. P. Dutton and Company 1881. One page undated ads priced in sterling. Original bright red cloth decorated in black and gilt. First Illustrated American Edition also the first to be issued in a decorative cloth binding of one of Verne's odder tales. Wealthy Chinaman hears that his fortune is lost. Opts for honorable suicide by arranging for a friend to kill him. Learns that his fortune isn't lost after all. Tells friend thanks but there is no need to kill him. Friend replies that he has already arranged for some thug to do the deed and now can't contact him. This Verne title is also unusual in that all three early publishers of this tale on both sides of the Atlantic ultimately published it in the exact same cloth binding showing several characters "afloat on their backs propelled by the wind caught in minisails attached to toe-masts controlled by waistband halyards" T&M. The first edition in English was published in September 1879 by Lee & Shepard of Boston translated by Virginia Champlin and unillustrated both in wrappers and in plain cloth. By November George Munro then published it in wrappers in his Seaside Library. About a year later October 1880 but dated 1881 Dutton of New York published the tale as here from the British plates a different translation by Ellen Frewer -- with fifty full-page illustrations from the original French edition and in the binding designed by Sampson Low. In November Sampson Low published it in England perhaps waiting to make it a holiday offering. Finally a year after this September or October 1881 Lee & Shepard re-published the Champlin translation but with the fifty illustrations that had appeared in the Dutton and Sampson Low editions and in the same binding they had used. This copy is in bright red cloth one of several colors used without priority and is in near-fine condition just a hint of wear at the spine ends but unusually bright; the front endpaper bears a Christmas 1880 gift inscription verifying the book's actual year of publication. ‎HECTOR SERVADAC‎

‎1878. Translated by Ellen E. Frewer. With Numerous Illustrations. London: Sampson Low Marston Searle & Rivington 1878. Original olive green cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt all edges gilt. First English Edition of this tale in which the heroes are carried away through space upon the comet "Gallia" visiting much of the solar system. The cover but not the title page bears the sub-title "The Career of a Comet." In September 1877 George Munro issued a pirated wrappered version of this tale in their "Seaside Library"; a month later the Philadelphia firm of Claxton Remsen & Haffelfinger issued the first half of this tale in a clothbound volume. Then in November 1877 though dated 1878 this authorized Sampson Low edition in England and an authorized Scribner Armstrong edition were both published the entire tale not just the first half. This copy is in olive green cloth; we have also seen terra-cotta and light lilac-brown no priority. Condition is very good spine a bit dull; the volume has been recased within its original binding preserving the original endpapers reinforced at the inner hinges. This is one of Verne's most intriguing space exploration tales. Taves & Michaluk V016; Edwards 16. unknown books‎

‎DICK SAND;‎

‎1878. or A Captain at Fifteen. A Novel. New York: George Munro 1878. 2 pp undated ads. Original green cloth. First Edition in English of this tale originally published in France as UN CAPITAINE DE QUINZE ANS. A whale hunt in the Pacific Ocean between New Zealand and the Americas ends in tragedy and Dick Sand as the only surviving crew member becomes captain at fifteen years of age. Not possessing the full skills of a sailor Dick tries to get the ship east to the South American coast. However the cook on board has plans of his own and manages to get the ship diverted to eventually land in the country of Angola on the continent of Africa. The cook's plans involve killing Dick and selling the other passengers of the ship into slavery. Kytasaari This tale was first published in English in November 1878 by the American pirate publisher Munro -- both in a two-volume wrappered format and in this plain green cloth format "the best manufactured of all Verne books published by Munro". Sampson Low's authorized London edition was published the following month in December at the end of which month Charles Scribner's Sons also published their edition both dated 1879. Both the Sampson Low and the Scribner editions were titled DICK SANDS with a final "S". This is a fine copy virtually as new. Taves & Michaluk V018; Myers 15. unknown books‎

‎THE CHILD OF THE CAVERN; or Strange Doings Underground‎

‎1877. Translated by W. H. G. Kingston. Numerous Illustrations. London: Sampson Low Marston Searle & Rivington 1877. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt all edges gilt. First British Edition of the tale also known as THE BLACK INDIES and as UNDERGROUND CITY. The unusual tale takes place deep in a Scottish mine in which a mysterious "goblin" appears to live. The peculiar wildness of Jules Verne's imagination shows with startling effect when he selects Scotland and its sober-minded people as scene and characters for his latest characteristic extravaganza. He describes a mine of fabulous wonders by and of superhuman powers and then he has a plot that would furnish plots for several exciting novels. from an early promotional piece cited in T&M The pirate publisher George Munro was the first to get out an edition THE BLACK INDIES in English in his triple-columned self-wrappered "Seaside Library" in the Spring of 1877. This first British edition came out in October of that year: "Pictured on the front cover is Jack Ryan kneeling on the twenty-sixth landing down the gloomy shaft. Harfang the bird owl is also shown on the front cover and spine" T&M. This copy is in red cloth; we have also had green and brown no priority. It is an unusually clean bright copy in near-fine condition a discreet repair at the head of the spine rear endpaper cracked. Taves & Michaluk V017; Myers 10. unknown books‎

‎THE FLIGHT TO FRANCE‎

‎1888. Or The Memoirs of a Dragoon. A Tale of the Days of Dumouriez. With Numerous Illustrations. London: Sampson Low Marston Searle & Rivington 1888. One preliminary page undated ads with this title the last added. Original green cloth pictorially decorated in black. First British Edition also the first hardbound and first illustrated edition in English published the year after the French edition titled LE CHEMIN DE FRANCE. This tale takes place during the 1792 defense of France under General Dumouriez against the invading Prussians -- culminating in the "cannonade of Valmy." This was one of Verne's most anti-German tales along with THE BEGUM'S FORTUNE; to quote from a contemporary British review cited by T&M This is a dangerous theme for a French writer especially now when the national feeling runs so high against all that is German. The writer delights to seek in the past a literary revenge for recent disasters as it seems not to be likely to come in the immediate future. It somewhat mars our enjoyment to hear so to speak throughout the gnashing of teeth whenever anything German is mentioned. The actual first edition of this title in English was published in wrappers in Toronto by October 1888; this Sampson Low edition was next published the following month. In the same month a wrappered American edition was published by Frank Lovell. This copy is in the secondary binding of green cloth decorated entirely in black and thus lacks one of the best features of the primary binding the gilt "streaks of rain" across the front cover scene. Condition is fine except for a cracked front endpaper. Taves & Michaluk V032; Myers 21. unknown books‎

‎GODFREY MORGAN‎

‎1883. A Californian Mystery. Translated by W. J. Gordon. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons n.d. 1883. Original aqua-grey cloth pictorially decorated in black. First American hardbound edition of this tale originally published the year before as L'ECOLE DES ROBINSONS. The New York Times panned this effort as cited in T&M: M. Jules Verne has never written books strongly marked with common sense; they have on the contrary offered unusual examples of the violation of all sensible ideas and the successful violation. But when it comes to Godfrey Morgan's trip around the world the submergeable steamer the plot to give him a taste of that Robinson Crusoe life of which he had dreamed the strain is too great. We are eager to be fooled but the fooling must have some semblance of art; it must not be bald imbecility. Jules Verne has no right to inveigle the public into buying such a book on the strength of his former novels; it is an abuse of the good-nature of the public. Scribner would not issue GODFREY MORGAN again. George Munro managed as usual to produce the first edition in English for his self-wrappered "Seaside Library" in January 1883; Sampson Low's British edition fully illustrated came out in March of that year followed by this Scribner edition from the British sheets in October. Whereas the British edition shows on its front cover Godfrey firing on lions and tigers from his perch inside a tree the Scribner edition shows Tartlet stumbling as he runs from a hungry crocodile. This copy is in aqua-grey cloth; we have also seen dark brown and light orange-brown no priority. It is a very good-plus copy with very light wear at the spine ends and very minor darkening of the cloth. Taves & Michaluk V024; Myers 29. unknown books‎

‎NORTH AGAINST SOUTH‎

‎1888. A Tale of the American Civil War. With Numerous Illustrations. London: Sampson Low Marston Searle & Rivington 1888. Original blue-grey cloth pictorially decorated in black and red all page edges gilt. First British Edition of this adventure tale taking place during the American Civil War. This is the tale of the antagonism between Burbank an anti-slavery Northerner now living near Jacksonville Florida and Texar a pro-slavery Southerner; Texar winds up kidnapping Burbank's daughter and hiding her in the Everglades and Burbank heads off in search of his daughter -- all as the Civil War rages around them. NORD CONTRE SUD came out in France in 1887 and by the end of the summer of that year the American pirate publisher George Munro came out with TEXAR'S VENGEANCE in his wrappered Seaside Library. In November 1887 Rand McNally published a hardbound American edition a different translation titled TEXAR'S REVENGE. Then this British edition hardbound and illustrated and the same translation as Rand McNally's came out in December 1887 though dated 1888. These were soon followed by Worthington's New York 1888 edition of TEXAR'S REVENGE. The book did not get good reviews in America: the New York Daily Tribune wrote In Jules Verne's story of "Texar". a very thin streak of narrative is padded to almost unwieldy proportions by a quantity of remarkably inaccurate information about the rebellion. If anyone thought the game worth the candle it would be easy to point out the various comical inaccuracies in the historical part of the story. quoted in T&M This copy is in the deluxe binding style with all edges gilt; its condition is very good -- spine a bit sunned as always volume slightly askew. This is a Verne title that we seldom see. Taves & Michaluk V033. unknown books‎

‎TOPSY TURVY‎

‎1890. New York: J. S. Ogilvie n.d. 1890. 1 page preliminary ads plus 2 pp terminal ads. Original dark blue-green cloth. First American Edition and first edition in the English language. This is the sequel to Verne's "Moon" books of many years earlier: quoting from the preliminary ad leaf this is the story of How the Americans bought the North Pole and planned to change the axis of the Earth making the Arctic regions bloom like the Tropics by the explosion of a stupendous cannon. This tale is a good example of Verne's growing cynicism: whereas in the 1870s he has the Baltimore Gun Club using its gigantic cannon to explore the moon here the club has purchased land in the Arctic so that they can reap huge profits when that land becomes tropical. "Topsy Turvy" appeared in English in the January 19 1890 issue of New York World -- at the same time that newspaper's famous reporter Nellie Bly was attempting to beat Phileas Fogg's record time around the world. It was at some point soon thereafter that this Ogilvie edition No. 183 of "The Favorite Series" with ten illustrations was published the wrappered version in Ogilvie's "Fireside Series" is dated January 1890 on its wrapper. Sampson Low's British edition THE PURCHASE OF THE NORTH POLE was not published until December of that year with twenty chapters; both the original French edition and Ogilvie's edition have twenty-one. This copy is clean and unworn -- fine except that the endpapers have damage from overzealous erasure. As always the text paper itself is browned and brittle -- as Ogilvie produced as cheap a book as it could. This is quite an uncommon Verne volume. Taves & Michaluk V035; Myers 53. unknown books‎

‎MICHAEL STROGOFF The Courier of the Czar‎

‎1877. Translated by W. H. G. Kingston. With Numerous Illustrations. London: Sampson Low Marston Searle & Rivington 1877. 24 pp ads dated Oct 1876. Original green cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt beveled all edges gilt. First British Edition of this historical tale of adventure taking place during a Siberian revolt. The first publication in English in October 1876 was in a wrappered American edition by Frank Leslie; this U.K. edition profusely illustrated and in a handsome pictorial binding came out two months later in December 1876 despite the 1877 date on the title page. It is noteworthy that MICHAEL STROGOFF is listed in this October ad catalogue -- though that does not mean that the book had necessarily been published by then. The binding of this copy is one of two variants priority unknown: both have the same front cover and spine pictorial panels but the front cover of this copy includes "Jules Verne" but not "The Courier of the Czar" while some copies show the opposite and the spine has a variant gilt panel behind the title. The publisher's monogram blind-stamp on the rear cover is also in a different style than on some copies. This is a near-fine copy with minor rubbing at the extremities but overall with very little wear or soil; atypically for this hefty volume the delicate original pale yellow endpapers are not cracked. This first British edition is quite uncommon and does not seem to turn up in any better condition. Taves & Michaluk V015; Edwards 15. unknown books‎

‎STORIES OF ADVENTURE‎

‎1874. With 68 Full-Page Illustrations. I. MERIDIANA. II. A JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH. New York: Scribner Armstrong & Co. 1874. 8 pp undated ads. Original brown cloth decorated in gilt and black. First Combined Edition. On the very same day that Scribner Armstrong published the authorized American edition of MERIDIANA May 23 1874 Shepard of Boston came out with a pirated edition; Shepard did the same with the earlier A JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH. To combat the cheaper Shepard books Scribner Armstrong came out with this combined volume on July 4th just six weeks later. It borrows the binding from the original Scribner Welford & Armstrong issue of the English MERIDIANA includes a separate title page and other preliminary leaves for each tale and combines all 48 MERIDIANA illustrations with just 20 of them from the other title. The first page of the ad catalogue is a "Caution" against buying these titles by any other publisher which "are PIRATED and cannot fail to be inferior in every particular". This is a very good copy with discreet repairs at the spine ends but quite attractive on the shelf. On the endpaper and title page is the penciled signature of Charles. Harvey. Scribner of Toledo Ohio -- a judge whose son invented the multiple switchboard and who may or may not be related to this book's publisher. See Taves & Michaluk V009. unknown books‎

‎TICKET NO. "9672‎

‎1899. Translated from the French by Laura E. Kendall. Chicago: M. A. Donohue & Co. n.d. 3 pp undated ads. Original green cloth pictorially decorated in black light blue and peach. First American hardbound edition. UN BILLET DE LOTERIE was first published in France in 1886 and that same year George Munro of New York was the first to publish this in English -- in two self-wrappered volumes of his "Seaside Library" the first volume was published by July 1886 and the second by December 1886. In between these two in August Sampson Low published the first British edition as THE LOTTERY TICKET. Munro being of course a pirate publisher his business went downhill fast after the passage of the International Copyright Act in 1891 clearly George did not offer enough "soft money" to his legislators. His "Seaside Library" publications became the property of Donohue of Chicago and this book published "by the turn of the century" T&M is one result: though mentioning only "Ticket No. 9672" on the binding and title page it also includes various other former "Seaside Library" numbers by other authors including Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher" and "The Pit and the Pendulum." There were no other American editions of this Verne tale between the Munro two-volume wrappered first and this Donahue one -- making this the first American hardbound edition. Both the front cover and the spine portray lighter-than-air flying machines. The usual problem for this book is the erosion of the peach-colored pigment used on the binding and this copy is no exception: although the book has very little overall wear the peach is entirely missing from the spine in fact it appears never to have been applied there and partly from the front cover. ‎THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND. consisting of: Part I. DROPPED FROM THE CLOUDS. plus: Part II. ABANDONED. plus: Part III. THE SECRET OF THE ISLAND‎

‎1876. a handsome set Together three volumes. Translated from the French by W.H.G. Kingston. Second Edition. London: Sampson Low Marston Searle & Rivington 1876. 3 pp undated ads in Part III. Original green cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt. First English Edition second impression of all three volumes that were sold separately but which together form one of Verne's greatest tales. The translation unfortunately was effected by W.H.G. Kingston whose translation changed the hero's name from Smith to Harding. Further Kingston abridged or omitted many of the technical passages indicating the castaway's scientific development of the island. Verne's anti-imperialist sentiments expressed by the dying Captain Nemo were also reversed by Kingston so as not to offend English readers. Unfortunately Kingston's became the standard translation to this day inflicting his omissions and distortions on English-language readers. T&M Sampson Low's first edition all three volumes dated 1875 in a variety of cloth colors came out in September 1875. T&M records their second impression as coming out in February 1879 -- but here we have the second impression of all three volumes with "Second Edition" on each title page all dated 1876. The three Sampson Low first impressions seldom turn up on the market as a set especially in the same color cloth; these second impressions only in green are quite scarce as well as evidenced by T&M's not having seen them. In any event this is a handsome matched set of the English second impression page edges plain the first impression's page edges were gilded. All three volumes are in attractive just-about-fine condition with scarcely any external soil or wear only the very slightest of rubbing at the edges; a few leaves at each end of each volume have light foxing; even the original delicate peach-colored endpapers are clean and uncracked. Given the extreme scarcity of the first impressions over several decades we have offered only one set in this condition at $22500 this set of second impressions is highly collectible. ‎THE GREEN RAY‎

‎1883. Translated from the French by Mary de Hauteville. London: Sampson Low Marston Searle & Rivington 1883. 32 pp ads dated Nov 1882. Original ochre cloth pictorially decorated in brown black and green. First British Edition and first edition in English. This tale is a bit different from many of Verne's -- a love story sited in Scotland though as always with its share of scientific imponderables a girl refuses to marry the man her uncles have chosen for her unless she sees the mysterious "green ray" which would tell her it is true love. The front cover shows Helena and Oliver with eyes fixed upon one another while the crowd behind them has all eyes fixed upon "the green ray." This British edition was published in September 1883 -- a month before George Munro's pirated version in his wrappered "Seaside Library"; there was no American hardbound edition of this Verne tale until 1965. In our experience THE GREEN RAY is one of the very few toughest UK first editions of Jules Verne to find today: why we do not know but several others that followed THE GREEN RAY are close in scarcity KERABAN THE INFLEXIBLE of 1884 MATHIAS SANDORF of 1886 A LOTTERY TICKET of 1886 THE CLIPPER OF THE CLOUDS of 1887 NORTH AGAINST SOUTH of 1887 THE PURCHASE OF THE NORTH POLE of 1890 A FAMILY WITHOUT A NAME of 1890 and FOUNDLING MICK of 1895. This copy is in ochre cloth; the one other color we have seen is mauve-grey -- both with the same pictorial design mauve-grey we have seen both with and without gilt pages edges; ochre we have seen only without as here. The ad catalogue in this copy is dated November 1882 -- almost a year before publication -- which is the earliest GREEN RAY ad catalogue we have seen the others being Sept 1883 and Oct 1884. This is a very good copy quite attractive externally but recased within its original binding with stiffened spine and with black tape along the original endpapers' hinges; there is an 1899 school prize inscription on the front endpaper verso. ‎THE STEAM HOUSE. Part I. THE DEMON OF CAWNPORE. With: Part II. TIGERS AND TRAITORS‎

‎1881. in bright red cloth Together two volumes. Translated from the French by Miss Agnes D. Kingston. Illustrated. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1881. 8 pp undated ads in each volume. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt beveled. First American hardbound edition of this tale taking place in India; to quote the synopsis provided by Scribner's at the time as cited in T&M Account of a journey through northern India in 1867 by four Englishmen in search of hunting and adventure; they travel over ground made memorable by the Indian mutiny of which many thrilling episodes are recalled and described; the famous Nana Sahib figures considerably in the work a renewed effort having been made at that time by the English government to capture him; the search for him and his death are described; the great feature of this story is the original manner in which the characters travel their equipage consisting of a complete house on wheels drawn by a huge traction engine having the form of an elephant. THE DEMON OF CAWNPORE has on its front cover an illustration of the "steam elephant" pulling the passenger car; TIGERS AND TRAITORS shows Maucler and Captain Hood taking refuge inside a tiger cage as tigers circle around them. George Munro published the first unillustrated edition in English of Part I in August 1880 and Part II in January 1881 in his self-wrappered "Seaside Library." Sampson Low published the first illustrated edition of Part I in December 1880 followed by Part II in April 1881. And Part I of this Scribner edition was published in February 1881 followed by Part II in May 1881. These two volumes are in bright red cloth; we have also seen them in blue cloth and more typically in grey terra-cotta or brown cloth no priority. Both volumes have expert repairs at the spine ends but otherwise are in bright very good-plus condition minor soil on one rear cover. Quite uncommon in the bright red cloth.
